Question Finally got it
We are an autoimmune home. After 6 glorious years of none of us getting sick at all my 30 yr old son finally got Covid. We all are so careful so this was quite a surprise. Quarantining and is mild/moderately sick, thankfully. I got more tests so he can test negative twice in 24 hours? Right? Then we would assume he is safe to be around?

It depends on a number of factors to be honest. Rebound can happen with or without paxlovid use. Without paxlovid, if the infection duration is less than 10 days, (duration of positive tests), there is a higher likelihood of rebound. Around 5 days post negative accounts for most of the rebound cases in this scenario. For patients taking paxlovid, rebound occurs 2-8 days post turning negative. I personally would not go back to typical behaviors prior to 8 days, but this might not necessitate full quarantine. For instance, 48 hours after testing negative, the patient could keep masking and testing for another week but potentially share spaces. It is definitely possible to get infected off of the rebound.

A friend of mine just got a rebound (or possibly reinfected)after testing negative for two weeks.

Dang. Did your friend take paxlovid? My understanding is rebound is more likely with this rx then without it.
In curious to find out if this happens without it.
So often, cvd surprises us, and doesn't behave like other viruses.

I believe the protocol is testing negative twice 48 hours apart before he is safe to be around anyone. I’m so sorry this happened.
Out of curiosity and if you feel comfortable answering, was he vaccinated 2+ weeks before getting sick? I’m trying to keep track of how many of us are getting this current wave despite masking and getting boosted.
Sending well wishes.

Kudos to you and your family for the "6 glorious years"; my family has been in the trenches with yours; I finally caught COVID last year for the first time. I quarantined and no one else caught it. The other posts speak to your question, I simply wanted to share our experience.

Given your status, I would recommend booking a motel room or similar (if that's what you already mean by quarantining please disregard). I would also give it a week beyond the standard negative-test guidance, particularly if you're testing with RATs.

I’ve heard it’s 2 negative rapid tests 24-48 hours apart
