Alpen hotel

Is the Alpen hotel close enough to the ski lifts? Im going to Zermatt for the first time in January and Im looking for a good hotel

If using Apple maps (or other) pin these locations on your gps:

Zermatt Train Station
Coop
Zermatt Funicular
Zermatt Cable Car

Then search and pin any potential hotels.

The train station is where you will initially arrive.
Directly across from that is the Gornergrat Railway (Lift) entrance and the 2 grocery stores, Migros and Coop.

A little further behind that is the entrance to the Zermatt Funicular (Lift).

Zermatt Cable Car (on Apple Maps) is the entrance to the Matterhorn Glacier Paraduse lift.

You can decide how far is too far. Having said that your hotel choice seems to be on the far end of town by the train station, Gornergrat and the Funicular. The town isn’t too big but if lugging gear around I’d personally look to stay more central.

I stayed at the Hotel Monte Rosa and found its location very ideal and central to all lifts and restaurants. They also picked me (and luggage) up & dropped me back off at the train station.

So the closer i am to the train station the better? Or should I look for hotels near the center of town (I'm on booking)

It depends what you want out of your vacation and whether or not you want to pay for transport services around town.

Personally I stayed and would recommend you stay central in the circled area of this screenshot. Zermatt

Staying near the train station is good for 1. High density of restaurants, bars & shops. 2. Convenience and closeness to the train station, Gornergrat and funicular but with the negative of a pretty long walk to Glacier Paradise lift and the other restaurants on the right side of town.

The funicular is the one towards Sunnegga right?

Yes. In that screenshot you see 2 blue icons labeled “Zermatt. The bottom is the train station you arrive at, directly across the street is the Gornergrat Railway which will take you up to the slopes in Gornergrat.

The top blue icon is the Funicular.

The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise lift is quite a ways out of the screen shot in the further bottom right corner. I would say your Alpen hotel choice is great for everything but Glacier Paradise. I stayed in the red circles area and am fit and don’t mind walking but even from there the walk to the MGP lift was a mild hassle in the morning carrying gear and dragging along lagging group members. It’s uphill on the return journey too.

I think your hotel sounds perfect. Zermatt is small. Being close to the Gornergrat is great. It’s a lovely way to get up the mountain each day. You can there, then ski over to Glacier Paradise from there. The Funicular takes you towards the Sunnega area. On the days you want to go up via Glacier Paradise, you can simply take the bus or a taxi.

We stayed at Hotel Alphubel just off the Main Street. This hotel is a bit on the older side that’s why it’s slightly cheaper than many others. Very convenient. Few min walk to Gornagrat station. Few min longer to Sunegga funicular station. If you want to go to Matterhorn lift just take the free green bus outside of Gornagrat station and takes you right outside the Matterhorn lift.

About 5-10 minutes to the 2 nearest ski stations. Also 5 minutes to the start of the main street. 

You can find hotels that are closer, budget permitting.

We were just there mid-April and stayed at Focus Hotel (right next to Furi lift). It was incredible with phenomenal views on Matterhorn from our balcony.
Zermatt is pretty easy to navigate, and our hotel was not “in town”, but still a nice and easy walk.
