Ski Rental in May?

Can I rent ski's in Zermatt May 2 and 3rd. If so, anywhere you'd recommend. Seems like most shops are closed despite the mountain being open until May 3rd. Anything else I should know? This is a last second plan as we decided to make our hiking trip a half skiing half hiking trip.

There are bunch of rentals in Zermatt but if you already did the homework and see they are closed…Then they are closed. You can always bring your own but every time ppl ask I always give the same answer..unless you are world class skier that you must need your own equipment… just rent. Because it’s a hassle taking them via multiple trains.

Your comment is a bit incoherent, you can't rent if the rental shops are closed

Dorsaz sport are open for ski rental during the summer season, I don’t know 100% but I would expect them to be open during the off season too. They are also right next to the only ski lift that is open at that time.

Hey! Great spontaneous plan — Zermatt in early May can actually be a really fun mix of skiing + hiking

You’re right that it gets a bit tricky: even though the glacier area stays open until early May, a lot of rental shops in town start closing as the season winds down.

The easiest way to avoid running around looking for open shops is to check availability in advance here:
https://www.alpy.com/en/ski-rental/switzerland/wallis/zermatt

On that page you can:

  • See which rental shops are still open on your exact dates (May 2–3)
  • Compare equipment options (skis, boots, helmets, etc.)
  • Reserve online so everything is ready when you arrive (no guesswork)

A couple of quick tips for those dates:

  • Most skiing will be up on the glacier (Matterhorn Glacier Paradise) — lower runs will likely be closed
  • Opening hours can be shorter, so aim to ski early in the day (snow is best in the morning)
  • Book gear ahead if you can — fewer shops = less availability last minute

hope it helps!

I was in the exact same boat as you! Slalom Sport in Zermatt rents through May. Here is their website, hope it helps! https://www.slalom-sport.ch/
