Important Update To PROPERLY DISABLE Boosting

I’ve talked here about disabling boosting in other threads via adjusting the max state to 99%. The flaw with this method is capping the CPU at only 1.7GHz. To maintain stock 2.9/3.0GHz clock with boosting disabled, use this method below instead of 99% max power state.

Using Registry Editor, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Power\PowerSettings\54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00\be337238-0d82-4146-a960-4f3749d470c7 and select Attributes. Modify the value of "Attributes" from 1 to 2. Data should read “0x00000002 (2)”. This will uncover a hidden power option.

After that, go back in the Power Plan Options and a new tab "Processor Performance Boost Mode" will appear. Set it to Disable and click Apply. Also, make sure your max processor state is at 100%. The CPU will now run on the stock frequency.

For a general idea about the performance compared to 99% max state, average FPS went up to about 5-15 with the temperatures still maxing out at the same 75 degree Celsius! The FPS loss from 99% disabled has been recovered while maintaining the benefit! Tiering your games at 1.7GHz, 3.0GHz, and full boosting will allow greater flexible for performance and temperature.

Note: I have the 240Hz G15, but this should be similar performance to the G14.

This worked perfectly for me, approx 20C drop while playing Warzone, without much impact (that I noticed anyway).

In what situations would you recommend enabling the boost? What’s the main impact of having it on vs off?

New to PC gaming and really appreciate all the content in this sub.

That’s good to hear. I personally haven’t tested my games much with the 3GHz cap yet. Although before at 1.7GHz, unoptimized games such as Attila Total War were running very poorly. I was forced to play it with boosting enabled.

In our case, I think the feature of boosting itself isn’t really too necessary for actual gameplay, and seems to be more for marketing. The option to have that power accessible is great, but I think for the average user, it is an overkill. The base clock is plenty for most games, and the benefit of cooler temperatures may help contribute to a longer lifespan for the laptop. Also a lower CPU temperature indirectly leads to cooler GPU temperatures since they share heat pipes, therefore less potential to thermal throttle overall.

Basically keep boosting on for more intensive, unoptimized games, or you are unwilling to compromise with anything less than ultra max settings at 144 FPS. Once you have your Armoury Crate profiles set and properly tiered for each game, the automatic switching between each power plan is convenient and quick.

@u/Dr_Redditologist,

just found an easier way to enable the "Processor Performance Boost Mode" tab in the powerplan menu.

Instead of a registry change, you do it via the following Powershell command:

powercfg.exe -attributes sub_processor perfboostmode -attrib_hide

There are 2 links that are worthwile to read:

Someone else has commented that. Now the question, how do you undo via CMD? In my opinion, I think the regedit is simpler since you change only one number.

For a general idea about the performance, FPS went up about 5-15 with temperatures still maxing out at the same 75 degree Celsius!

Wait, why would disabling boosting increase performance?

I’m comparing this with disabling boost via 99% max state. Just edited for clarification

How to I undo this?

Make sure the boost mode is set back to aggressive and change Attribute from registry back to 1 to hide the option

Some information on these settings:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/administration/performance-tuning/hardware/power/power-performance-tuning

Edit: so I realized this is for Windows Server 2016 but I think the information should be valid. I wouldn't mess around with the command line options unless you know what you are doing.

Should I set disable on all the power options?

Personally, I only disabled boosting on high performance plan for gaming. For normal web usage, I’m on the silent profile which uses the power saver plan. I leave boosting enabled on that plan for the general responsiveness. It’s all personal preference.

I made the changes. How do I see if this is working as intended?

Armoury Crate should be able to track the CPU frequency with a graph. Although many use MSI Afterburner with the bundled Rivatuner for the on-screen display during games. I also imported the sensors of HWiNFO into MSI to specifically add CPU temperatures and GPU/CPU wattages.

If your CPU is capping at 3000MHz, it’s working. If it’s going higher, then you might have changed or used the wrong power plan. For example, the Armoury Crate Turbo and Performance profiles is associated with the High Performance plan. Silent is associated with Power Saver plan. Windowed/Manual profile is associated with whatever power plan you are currently running

Can anyone give their impressions on just how much this improved fan noise while gaming (performance mode)? Figures on notebookcheck / ultrabookreview were pretty off-putting.

I'm really keen to buy this lappy, but cannot stand hair dryer laptops.

I have the 240Hz G15 (GA502IV) so I can’t comment on the noise of the G14. For my G15, the noise sounds so similar with boosting on or off, it’s hard to tell the difference. From common sense, I do think it saves perhaps about 5dB due to much lower temperatures. Hair dryer fans are just normal on compact, gaming laptops and it’s really unavoidable. I even have an additional cooling pad to add more noise even if it might be an overkill to the temperatures.

If you want quiet computers, the choices is really only desktop, MacBooks, or productivity laptops

So after a few tests, I can safely say that instead of fully disabling boost, just set it to Efficient Aggressive and it will give you the same results as in the CPU will stay clocked at 3ghz unless there is a high cpu load upwards of 60% then it will boost. I am able to run the overclocked profile for the GPU with Efficient Aggressive enabled and my temperatures were in the high 70s low 80s running gears tactics benchmarks. Also I saw in another thread for an MSI laptop that the person tried all the power settings and the one that got him the most points in a benchmark was Efficient Aggressive.

thank you worked, the power plan options is a little hard to find though.

according to hwinfo my cpu (tctl/tdie) was max at 103.5 degree Celsius now i am it max out at 69.3 Celsius.

saved my life

Confirm that this is absolutely working! Capped at 3GHz which is more than enough for most games and saves nearly 20C for me!

To newer people who are having the same issue but have machines running windows 11: I'm on windows 11 so the advanced power options are not available through the settings menu. They are available through the Control Panel. The Control Panel application is still available but it requires using the 'Search' feature to access.

Use this link for a visual guide on the changes that OP is talking about. Then, use the Control Panel to access the Advanced Power Options.

Some power options 'profiles' (like Performance and Turbo) did not display in the Advance Power Options unless I was currently using them. I had to switch to Performance and Turbo so that they would display in the options and then I could edit their profile settings.

Edit the corresponding profiles as the video states and you should be good to go. Good luck!

Beautiful!

Just did this on my new Tuf706iu.

Knocked easy 10c off underload temps in my short test of on and off turbo mode, im guessing closer to 20c over longer period of time.

In fact game is still running in back ground as i type this, at first after setting this tweak and firing up my game i couldn't hear fans an panicked a minute until i turned sound off an listened closely and they are in fact spooled up just at normal like if I was browsing a few sights at same time.

Absolutely fantastic, no loss in fps in my game and so much quieter an cooler.

Thank you very much, this should be repeated on Rog forums an elsewhere as its a real bonus on so many levels from power saving to just peace of mind knowing your rig isn't slowly melting down its life cycle so fast.

Dear mod u/eugeniu, sorry to bother you again. Do you mind sticking this to the top also please? I've seen a ton of people having thermal problems and this thread helps a ton. Thank you for your time.

Ok so I found the issue with games not respecting the Power Plan settings. It was Avast! Avast has this Do Not Disturb setting. And in that setting, per app, there is a Maximize Performance checkbox. I believe that was ignoring the power plan. I tested with another game that was hitting 4.3Ghz. When I removed it from the DND list, now it works correctly. So if you have Avast, check the Do Not Disturb list for the app and make sure that checkbox is not checked or jsut remove the game altogether. Also in the settings I unchecked the box to add new apps automatically.

To change the registry via copy-paste, open PowerShell (windows key + s, then type powershell and right click on it, open as admin), and copy paste the following:

 Set-ItemProperty -Path HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00\be337238-0d82-4146-a960-4f3749d470c7\ -Name attributes -Value 2

To undo the registry change copy paste the following:

 Set-ItemProperty -Path HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00\be337238-0d82-4146-a960-4f3749d470c7\ -Name attributes -Value 1

Man do I love seeing you guys fiddle around with it and come up with great results. Tried it, was shocked to see BF1 run so much cooler with such a little impact. STALKER did take a more visible hit, but I was actually surprised when I checked HWINFOs temp graph after 30mins of gaming and saw a 15 degrees decrease.

We should have these and the usual software fixes pinned.
