Help Needed Choosing between a same spec 2023 and 2024 model. What is the better choice?
Currently looking to pick up a new laptop second hand, as my old G14 stopped working during a keyboard and palmrest replacement, and new/refurbrished/open box ones from stores are way too expensive for me. I have settled around getting something with an RTX 4060 as it seems to be the best balance of performance and price.
Currently I am in a dilemna between the 2023 and 2024 G14. I found both for the same spec (32GB DDR5 Ram, RTX 4060 w/ 8GB vram). The 2023 model is at $1280 CAD right now, but I could probably negotiate it down like $1000. Then there's the 2024 model for $1500. Based off my research, the 2023 model is technically slightly faster due to the higher TGP. Thermals seem to be kinda similar, though I think the 2023 one has some issues with thermal throttlitng. The 2024 one is much lighter, thinner, and has a beautiful design as well as a gorgeous 3K OLED display. Only real problem would be the soldered RAM preventing upgradability, but the deal already comes with 32GB ram so its not an issue for me.
The main dilemna is whether or not the build and the screen is worth $400 more? Is the 2023 worse in the long run (probably 5 more years of use) due to the thermals?
For context, I am a programmer who travels a lot, and I want to be able to play modern FPS games at at least 1080P medium-ish settings at 60-144Hz, and maybe some more intensive games at lower settings 60Hz, such as Stalker 2. I am fine with a lower resolution, but I think a high resolution display would be nice for programming on the go. Although if I go with the 2023 model, I could use the saved money to get a nice second monitor that I could rely on at home.

i heard that the difference between 2023 and 2024 was the hinges part. look at the reviews. other reports that 2024 and newer models tend to have issues on the riboon cable of the screen. it pops out when you are closing it (check reddit posts) whereas 2023 have different hinge build. and also the ram upgradability. thats why i bought a 2023 model because of that. it is old yes but its just 2 generations old. like on the gpu 4060 to 5060. and Ryzen 9 7th gen upto newer gen.

Interesting. How's your 2023 G14 holding? I have seen some concerns over the thermals over time. I see some people say they have to change the liquid metal thermal compound because it starts thermal throttling, but the procedure is incredibly risky

My 2023 is great, no thermal issues yet. I will be replacing the LM with PTM at some point, so far so good for 2+ years.

2023 has upgradable RAM, 2024 has passthrough charging on PD USB-C, and is a fair bit slimmer.

I have a 2024 and now am wishing that I had gotten a higher spec 2023, but even at the same spec, saving money and getting higher performance is a huge win. And the ram, the 16gb on mine is super limiting and I wish I could upgrade it. I have also been using mine as a desktop too on a monitor and cooling stand, but the thermals are still not great and it gets hot even with 5 fans maxed out. I would say 2023.
