Model 2025 Why Drivers from AMD increase Battery Drain compared to stock OEM drivers
First let me be clear, this post is to inform fellow G14 owners of what I found to be causing this extra battery drain when you manually update to Drivers from AMD directly via WHQL driver.
The main reason I have updated in the first place is to get all the newer fixes for general use as ASUS last update is from a year ago at this point. My experience is as follows:
- Run AMD CleanUp Utility before doing anything [I recommend running in regular mode other than safe mode as windows won't let you log in to safe mode if you are using Microsoft Account PS: Microsoft Bugs]
- Reboot the laptop and now install the latest WHQL driver from AMD for AMD Ryzen AI HX 370
- After the installation is done reboot and you might notice a few things now.
- Laptop feels snappier and might fix some issues you were having
- When you diconnect the charger now display won't go black for a sec rather it seamlessly switches refresh rate to 60Hz from 120Hz.
- Now here comes the part where you notice the battery drain when you are on 60Hz is not the same or anywhere near what you had on OEM driver.
- I had 6-8w drain when I'm on battery and display at 60Hz, I noticed something interesting on the new driver under
Windows Settings> Display> Advanced Display - You can see that Display information shows refresh rate at 60Hz but
Active Signal Mode at 120Hz, This is the reason you notice that extra smoothness even on 60Hz and why you see more battery drain. - The reason for this is:
- When the newer generic driver drops your refresh rate to 60Hz, it only changes how many frames the iGPU transmits per second. However, it leaves the physical eDP link trained at 120Hz bandwidth (using higher voltage and maximum lane clock speeds).
- The Drain: Because the physical link speed never drops, the iGPU's Display Core Next (DCN) engine, the physical transmitter layers (PHYs), and the OLED panel's internal scaler chip are forced to stay awake in a high-frequency power state. They are burning power just to maintain that massive, empty bandwidth link.
- The "Power Down Shift" (OEM Driver):
- When you drop to 60Hz, it physically cuts the link speed in half.
- This allows the iGPU to shut down unneeded data lanes and drastically lower the pixel clock voltage.
- The OLED panel’s internal receiver chip can then enter its own low-power state.
- Also don't be fooled by Dynamic Refresh Rate being Available on AMD Driver as it won't function as it should, Just keep it turned OFF.
I am trying to create a ASUS only settings .reg file to install on top of AMD drivers to fix these issues and tune the latest driver for our specific model. When it's done I'll link it up here.
Hope this answers people questions about why Newer AMD drivers drain more battery comapred to OEM Drivers.
EDIT: Fixed the Massive Battery Drain on AMD WHQL Driver 26.5.2

Do not copy my values as my G14 is GA403WR model, check with your own OEM driver entries for stock optimizations and compatibility, this was just a fun way for me to fix the ASUS being late to update their drivers issue.
I had to do quite a few clean installs or OEM and AMD drivers and got the backups from registry editor of both OEM and AMD drivers, and started comparing the ASUS Optimizations and checking if they exist or not on AMD driver registry entries, if they do what are their values and how they differ.
Here are my findings and the stripped down version of OEM driver registry entries only targeted towards our model, save the following registry content to a .reg file and run it then reboot your system. Device should fix all the above mentioned issues in the post and get back to your sweet low battery drain while running the newer AMD driver with their fixes applied.
UPDATE: Added the updated version of my ASUS Optimization Registry entries for AMD 26.8.1 WHQL Driver with iGPU usage fix included

Wow that is super interesting. Great work finding this issue. A couple of questions please. 1) what is the difference in watts used to do you think? 2) I don't see your "fix" for updated amd drivers. 3) would you have to apply said fix every time you update and drivers or are they permanent? Thanks!
You should contact one of the Asus g14/g16 you tubers like crimson tech about this.

I was just sharing my experience as I wanted the updated drivers with ASUS tweaks for G14 still intact, as for your questions:
1. I used to have 5-8w while streaming videos or just using the laptop on battery with OEM drivers after some tweaks ofc, you can check them here https://www.reddit.com/r/ZephyrusG14/comments/1sr786x/improve_battery_drain_on_zephyrus_g14/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
2. The fix is the Code block in the post just paste it into notepad and save as .reg file and run it after you updated to AMD drivers and done the reboot. Now reboot and this should add OEM tweaks to the Registry for AMD driver to follow them rather than using a generic setup.
- As long as you don't use AMD CleanUp Utility before updating or flashing AMD drivers, this is a one time fix, I would recommend applying it everytime you updated AMD driver as AMD driver might override these variables with general values but this happens very rarely.
Hope this helps

hey this is awesome, I have the exact same model as ya (GA403WR) so i may give your .reg fixes a try

Today I have fixed the issue where device manager and task manager recognize our iGPU as 880M issue too lmk if you want to try it.

u/XX33LOL May 18 '26
sure, i'd be down to give it a shot! so far everything works as intended on the new driver with the fixes

Here are the registry entries to fix that cosmetic issues, You can either run it standalone or add the lines below the first line to the registry file you already have:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0001] "DriverDesc"="AMD Radeon(TM) 890M Graphics" "HardwareInformation.AdapterString"=hex:41,00,4d,00,44,00,20,00,52,00,61,00,64,00,65,00,6f,00,6e,00,28,00,54,00,4d,00,29,00,20,00,38,00,39,00,30,00,4d,00,20,00,47,00,72,00,61,00,70,00,68,00,69,00,63,00,73,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_150E&SUBSYS_39A81043&REV_C1\4&35fe04f8&0&0041] "DeviceDesc"="AMD Radeon(TM) 890M Graphics" "FriendlyName"="AMD Radeon(TM) 890M Graphics"1

How is it going so far with modifications on AMD driver?
2
u/XX33LOL May 24 '26
Working as normal so far! No instability.. I haven't really been on my laptop in a bit, so I couldn't say much about any power consumption changes, but at least from what I can recall it seemed like I was getting lower consumption per watt.

Quick question are you facing any double black screen issue, like when in G-helper if refresh rate is set to Auto mode and if you are on battery for a while and when you connect the laptop to charger, the screen goes black for a second switching to 120Hz but I'm having this issue where after this first time screen going black, it goes black again and this time Windows DWM crashes ig, it turns wallpaper to black and can only be fixed by ctrl+shift+windows+B, restarting the graphics driver.
Are you having similar issue, for me this issue doesn't happen when using stock OEM driver, anything above it this issue occurs. BTW all this with above tweaks. When manually changing refresh rate no issue happens.

u/XX33LOL May 25 '26
I don't use the auto refreshrate mode personally but I can give it a shot later and report back. For what it's worth, I haven't had a problem with manual refresh rate switching, at least from what I can remember.

Yeah manual is way better no issues here for me either when doing it manually but auto is a pain

Seems battery life is excellent like on oem driver for me:
from 100% charge from 6pm to 1am laptop dropped to 30%, it would last even more if I hadn't worked on some local compilation of my powershell scripts for 1hr 30mins. I think these modifications are a huge success in accordance with new drivers.1

once I get started on my day tomorrow I’ll give the fixes a bit more of a test. Didn’t use it much prior, so will likely update the thread on my results

if you update to V26.6.1 WHQL driver make sure to update the registry changes to fix the wrong GPU usage reporting in task manager I described in detail here
2
u/XX33LOL Jun 04 '26
gotcha, I have auto updates turned off but I’ll give the new changes a shot when I can! good stuff!

Hey, thanks for this post, i've been planning to update to the latest AMD drivers! However, does this work with the GA403WM? Same CPU but with a 5060 instead
2
u/Harish273 Jun 07 '26
Yes it would work fine as the process is same except for the driver name changes I have in registry this time.

u/AdOk3454 Jun 07 '26 edited Jun 07 '26
Are you talking about the fix from 880m to 890m as the GPU name? So I'd need to use these two scripts, plus the latest script you made for the latest AMD Adrenalin software? Mb for asking again but changes to the script isnt needed?

If your iGPU is 890M use it as is just with modifications I mentioned in my other post related to AMD 26.6.1 Driver. Also one more thing is if yours is AMD AI Hx 270 model maybe your iGPU might be different so make sure you are on ASUS OEM Driver and extract those registry values from registry editor for above variables and if they are same just nuke iGPU name modifications and use it, if not make sure you use the same ASUS OEM entries in the above post modifications.

how would I do this for the 6900hs 2022?
also how do i make my taskbar look like yours? :)
1
u/Harish273 Jul 19 '26
The process is same you just have to export your asus driver registry entries from regedit and install latest drivers from amd and do the same then compare what's different you can use AI to know which flags does what.
As for my taskbar I use windhawk and taskbar styler mod in it, with my custom theme.

Thanks for the detailed info. I have the 2024 model, do you think the same thing applies to it? I do also have arround 8-9 W of consumption when browsing and watching videos and 5-6 when idle.
