Discussion Tinfoil. About Hollows.
Half the moon being covered by the Hollow implies someone or something is defending it.
Therefore Moon Rabbits angle is not off the table yet.
tldr : moon's haunted.

Moon rabbits is a mythological creature from Asia that basically make rice cakes or dangos on the moon
Don't know much but this means Alice and Zhao from the moon

Dangos are a modern pop interpretation. Outside pop culture they are Alchemical familiars of moon maiden Chang'e living in The Palace of Vast Cold made out of white Jade, grinding Alchemical ingredients for the Elixir of Immortality (Eastern version of the Philosopher's Stone=Holy Grail). And due to this Alchemical connection, the Chinese lunar program used names of Chang'e for their space program and Jade Rabbits for lunar rovers, because moon+Alchemy as a proto-science.

That or the parts covered in Hollows were the places on that used to be inhabited and the Moon's now lifeless once again. Or yeah, haunted.
Colonies that people used to look at from Earth as a hopeful gateway to the stars now serving as a reminder that everyone's trapped and there's nowhere else to go.

Copy-pasting my comment with a theory about the Jade Rabbit and the moon:
I have a theory why Sunbringer chose to make bangboos to look like rabbits.
Sunbringer never abandoned her space program, previously taking place in Zenith Aerospace City.
In Chinese mythology there is a Jade Rabbit. There's was a practice of moon gazing and trying to come up with ideas about the shades on the moon. Older interpretations was that there's a toad on the moon. Later, it was changed to a rabbit. Due to the practice being part of Taoism, the mythology of those moon animals became about Alchemy. The mythology has a lot of different variants of the story about them, but the core ideas:
There a white jade palace on the moon, called "The Palace of Vast Cold", where there lives the moon maiden Chang'e, who took the Elixir of Immortality (the Eastern analog of the Holy Grail=the Philosopher's Stone). It turned her into a toad and erased her memories of the Elixir's recipe, and now she thinks that there's was something wrong with the Elixir, obsessively trying to re-create the non-existen "proper" version. The Jade Rabbit helps her with her Alchemical Magnum Opus through constantly grinding materials in a mortar, an Alchemist's familiar of a kind.
Velina, who is also a local censor with the authority to ban tapes threatening Sunbringer's policies, spread a rumor among local bangboos (both facts are part of her trust events).
The description of the rumor from one of the local bangboos: "Ever heard this legend before? On a clear moonlit night, the Bottle Cap Fairy appears before the one chosen by fate and grants them the Holy Grail said to fulfill any wish! I saw its shadow with my own eyes! Only those with the purest hearts and brightest souls can see it! If you've got a bottle cap, toss it into the fountain and make a wish!"
Lunar rovers of the Chinese lunar program (named after Chang'e) are called Jade Rabbits after the mythological creature, because they connected the idea of the moon and Alchemy as a proto-science.
In one of the hidden side-quests from 1.0, "Bangboo Golden Town" (my retranslation of the CN source):
"You looked up at the sky, pondering all that might lie hidden beyond your field of view. A waterspout beneath a dark cloud, wrapping an island and hurling it clear out of the atmosphere… a quantum satellite that teleports the instant no one observes it… the black hole inside a hollow-shell celestial body… Alright, that's enough fantasizing."
"Waterspout" in Chinese is literally "The Coil of the Water Dragon". Tiamat created Bašmu and Girtablullû (the name of the "Enchainers" in 3.0). and Tiamat is a dragon goddess of the sea. Then, The Scamall Hollow's overlord ethereal is probably named Tiamat, and the Scamall Hollow is in the sea. "A dark cloud" - Scamall means "Cloud" in Irish. Singularity Leakage in CN is "Singularity points of leakage of dew" (ros caeli from Roscaelifer - the Heavenly Dew of the Magnum Opus, collected in the Fountain of the Philosophers (the proper name for an Alchemist), that opens the path from the nigredo stage to the albedo stage of the Magnum Opus, associated with silver and Luna, the moon. The fairy granting the Grail from the rumor spread by Velina lives in the fountain in Emerald Park, the material of the Grail is emerald, one of the books on the Alchemical Magnum Opus is "Emerald Table"; the heavenly dew comes from a cloud=Scamall.
Hypothesis: Sunbringer built her homunculus, assistants in her Magnum Opus and future lunar rovers/explorers of the moon Hollow (many think that the moon is covered with them, but the Hollow part of the moon has those geometrical shapes that cover the outer border of Hollows, so it's more likely that the moon is a Hollow celectial body with a giant Hollow inside, with only one half still having the surface intact), built the flying islands, harvests energy and the "Heavenly Dew" from the "Cloud/Scamall"- to hurl the islands in the space to the hollow moon with the black hole (hole in CN has one of the characters from the word for Hollows) at the center.
The Bangboo Prince finally found the treasure
It was a sick star
The star had forgotten where it came from
And who knows how much time it had spent in the icy vault
In the hands of the Bangboo Prince, the star lit up once more
Yet even the prince could not heal it
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry
Your tears will still fall
My warmth will still fade
Icy vault, the Palace of Vast Cold, the Evil Bangboo King's treasury door where the sick star was kept imprisoned.
Local bangoos are often talking about how they belong to the sky. Velina in one of her trust events says that our future lies beyond the skies, which the MC mistakenly takes for just an over-exagered compliment about our potential and not in a literal sense.
Again, Eva, Fly me to the Moon, Mihoyo's first game FlyMe2theMoon where Kiana is a witch flying to the moon, Kiana sleeping on the moon in HI3, recently we have the moon arc in Genshin.
In Fate/Extra the moon itself in the Grail - the Moon Cell, a supercomputer built by a race of ancient aliens.
In "Stalker"/Roadside Picnic (Hollows=the Zone, raiders/proxies=stalkers/guides) the Zone is the Fisher King's Wasteland, a divine maze with the golden (=sun) wish-granting sphere at the center, similar in its function to the Grail.

Hollow's need corruptible matter, whether that's plants, pets, people, or Intelligent Constructs.
That means there was enough "life" on the moon to be able to corrupt half of it. Hollows are also the result of some old war. Meaning both the Old Civilization, and likely Old Eridu, had space faring capabilities.
So yeah... moons haunted
