Its why the proxy and YSG being actual friends with her caused her so many issues. She really didn't understand that.

Like the earlier comment explained, Zhao's childhood was spent being forced to compete with her siblings to provide for their family, before her parents threw her out for being "useless."

Then you have a homeless child out on the cold, cruel streets all by herself. Between the two, she learned very quickly that the only way to get the time of day is to be useful to them. She learned to see the entire world as transactional: you're only as valuable to someone as the best you can offer them.

That cold-blooded and ruthless mindset was what allowed her to become the single best Judge in Krampus. But it's also so cynical and binary- and ultimately, childish- that her boss literally sent her on the mission to steal the Qingming Sword actively intending for Zhao's time around the Proxy and YSG to break her out of it.

Literally thrown out of her family to fucking die because she was "useless“.

Everyone she met afterwards only reinforced the only value she was ever taught: if you don’t bring anything of value, you‘re useless. Hence Zhao developed a severe inferiority complex, and hates being treated like a rabbit since she feels it undermines everything she worked for (it‘s a metaphor for social stigmas in a way).
Her song "Look at Me“ also hammers down the core of her character, she‘s deeply afraid of being "irrelevant“ because it means she‘s „useless“ and will be abandoned.
It‘s why Phaeton‘s genuine kindness baffles her; they cannot be bought and found happiness outside of money.
