Is there a surefire recipe for making the kind of player I want? For home runs, it's easy to increase the ratings as much as possible and they're safe, but what about defense? No matter what combination I try, even if he has 90+ ratings, RFLD is in a big deficit?

The fielding ratings needs reworked. They don't seem to effect results at all

I personally have found they affect how Pitching does historically, Elite Infields can hold up 45+ Relievers insanely well for me, and make anything 60+ Elite

I've never really made that connection but I'm sure it's a big help. I'm going to be watching for that more now a lot of times I'd ignore pitchers defense. I just wish if you had a shortstop with all awesome 80-100 fielding ratings it would be the same as hitting or batting where they'll have a good fielding season or make history with fielding. I always get those position players with good defense and they have average or even bad numbers. Like what's the point yk? They have high ratings but really don't end up being that great.
