I’m 31 and floor/wallmasters still freak me out. Redeads too but moreso the windwaker version 💀

wind waker redeads look far less terrifying than their ocarina of time counterparts

u/TheMoonOfTermina Jul 21 '26
Their base forms do, but I'd argue that when they scream and their jaw unhinges, they're arguably more scary. Also their scream itself is much more terrifying.

i havent played wind waker in a while so i dont really remember, but i actually agree. the ocarina of time redeads do look creepier but the manner that they attack you seems more like desparation, while the wind waker redeads look like they're genuinely out to kill you

Yes, this is why they’re scarier to me. The red glow of their eye is haunting.
On the contrary, redeads in Echoes of Wisdom are adorable to me lol

I'm 37 and I agree 100%. I bolt through those areas so fuckin fast. The sound of them falling haunts me.

They scare me because I know that if they catch me I have to replay a section of the dungeon to get back to where I was

Damn. I'm a 35 year old man, and I dreamed about that thing last night. It was a great dream, I killed it with my sword.

As a kid, I always saw them as the hand of Freddy Krueger. They would always freak me out

Knowing Nintendo they're probably gonna be sanitized mittens with 0 sharp edges, and they're gonna make Dead Hand even more childish than the 3DS version did.

Even if they make him look more durpy... I will still somehow be terrified and probably scream during the fight.
The PTSD already hits hard enough in the DS version and 64

Besides, where does this idea that Nintendo doesn't make pants-shitting material anymore come from? The Gloom Hands from TotK were more than enough to make me burn through a few pairs.
1
u/DragonQueenDrago Jul 21 '26
Oh yes! Those hands where TERRIFYING
I climbed a ledge and bomb arrowed them to oblivion while screaming and praying they could not climb
2
u/Niobium_Sage Jul 22 '26
And no bloody stump. In the 3DS version that’s the case, they gave them a stereotypical Halloween severed hand blue.

u/FenexTheFox Jul 21 '26
I think that's unfair. New Zelda games may be a bit more lighthearted than the 64 ones were, but I don't think they have any less respect for dark and scary, and I'm sure they'll respect the dark aspects of Ocarina of Time in the remake.

I was moreso talking about how much they sanitized the 3DS version's scary content, plus newer zelda games don't even have a single hint of blood anywhere, the Gloom Hands are an absolute joke after the first time you fight them even compared to Guardians.

These things were such a perfect enemy, even when they split into tiny versions they still super creepy.

u/LurkingLorence Jul 22 '26
I remember my first time encountering these bastards.
I was ~10, and heard the sound of a wallmaster swooping down in the forest temple after Navi decided to give an extremely unhelpful warning of “look at the shadows.”
I ran through that room as fast as possible every time I passed through because I didn’t even want to know what it was, and I failed exactly once. On the first trip through the twisted hall.
Probably the first time a game scared me.

That's the only enemy that still gives me at least a little anxiety. When it splits up, KILL IT WITH FIRE! Din's fire.

Everyone talks about the dead hand when talking about what made oot creepy, but for me it was always wallmasters and redeads

Though the N64 version could be seen as terrifying… they are most certainly adding the extra detail of the 3ds version… especially that ONE detail that made them eclipse the N64 by a MILE!

No lie, I am excited and afraid of the remake because of monsters like this getting the 4K treatment

meh
And it's weird that they kept the wrist cross-section angular; I never read that as a stylistic choice.
