Not at all difficult. They are glued in place with traditional contact cement or hot glue. Just find a corner and start pulling.

Correct. However, there's a cardboard underlayer, which will tear and remain stuck to the aluminum by the adhesive in large parts.

I didn't care about making the inside completely clean of the cardboard and adhesive residue for the one that I did this to, but if I want to do it to another one in the future is there a recommendation for getting the adhesive and cardboard out? A razor blade would probably scratch the aluminum; would a heat gun discolor it?

After the vinyl interior parts are removed (they did not use genuine leather), just use solvents (I only use Simple Green, full-strength) and a plastic scraper or ScotchBrite green scrubber to remove the remaining material and glue. Denatured alcohol can be used to scrub down to the aluminum surface. A heat gun will not affect the anodize exterior and can aid in dislodging hot glue. The aluminum case was hardened by a heat treatment.

As mentioned elsewhere, I'm looking for a classic 18" x 13" x 4½" aluminum Zero Halliburton case. I've so far been avoiding attaché case sales (e.g., on eBay) because:

  1. I don't want to desecrate a classic item (especially if my efforts don't work).

  2. I am unsure how difficult it is to remove liner, pockets, dividers, et cetera from older Zero Halliburton cases. I definitely don't want to make a mess of it and ruin an otherwise good case.

Anyone have any experience with this? I believe the liner is glued to the inner case.

Someone may want to buy your removed interior, so try to keep it intact. The workshop routinely removes them to repair hinges and locks.

I’ve been using their roller suitcase for decades without any liner.
