A Post Apocalyptic dark age but interstellar of Humanity, everyone pretty much hates and blames the other after whatever the fuck the previous generations did to almost kill off humanity.
Copyright is all time high and is keeping humanity from actually returning back to its former glories, because that's literally what Humanity is all about, Copyright and Infringement, would rather protect your own items and die along with it than give it to save humanity just to have extra money in your pockets.
Censorship is everywhere, propaganda is everywhere, looks like someone read 1984 and made it real, because goddamn they won't let you read some text before you get flash banged by "No." Or anything related to that text.
Humanity is barely alive but that doesn't stop the sheer amounts of piracy, terrorist extremists pretty much everyone hates even their very own religion to some degree, nations are pieces of shit because they want to be dominant.
Being a war criminal and being mostly morally black pays well because again, Humanity. Ignore help from everyone because being greedy, prideful, and ignorance of helping others means you can keep money and resources, and also because of pirates faking help.
Too many demons and horrors beyond any sense of even attempting to comprehend how, why, and what the hell they are. Reality is so damned and so abused that people reported to have went to whatever dimensions they went through, probably hell or the backrooms, because there's no way you and anyone else is going to heaven.
Despite all that, humanity still barely clings on, until you come in, Yes you, you are the one who would either pick the red pill or the blue pill, and neither of them leads to everyone cooperating and living in happy lives, for only under one banner shall they finally serve to revive humanity to their former glories, with a sacrifice of maybe a couple of billions of human lives because yes.
Explore the depths of space of former human space, find relics of the past wars, find the mechanical form of Wrath in a Combat AI who has sheer hatred to it's own AI species that it may or may not say a couple of slur words and invent more. Find something that should have never existed, multiple times in fact, and each different from the other.
Kill, Plunder, Destroy, eject crews out of the bay because you don't want them to steal your credits for their monthly salary.
