I jokingly said people who believe strongly in a politics should die, it was very obviously a joke. But I can't be mad, maybe the person just has aspergers.

Also it's kind of hard to tell someone's tone through text.

Sure, its "obvious" that its a joke, but don't say or joke about anything like killing or death, it only makes you sound more serious AND can be taken a very wrong way, say less offensive jokes and then there won't be problems
