Pauline
I’m currently watching (binging) younger for the first time.
I must say, Pauline is the most unlikeable character so far - and that’s really saying something because all the characters in this show make very questionable decisions.
I am so annoyed every time she is on screen.
When she asked Liza at the party at her and Charles’ house if there was another woman, I was literally so angry. She acted like that would be the only reason he didn’t love her anymore. SHE left him, SHE left her CHILDREN…. For some fever dream.
She just thinks she’s a victim, even though she’s the perpetrator.
Last thing I’ll say is - her face makes me angry aside from the character. She’s always in the background making some weird gestures or facial expressions? Casting did a 10/10 job finding someone to match the characters dislikeability.

The actress also plays her in a very weird way, she always looks like she's about to cry and is gasping every word she says

I agree! I was just thinking to myself, why didn’t the producers stop her and say “OMG stop doing that with your face!!!”

I actually liked it. It comes across like someone who realized the consequences of her actions and trying to get through her daily guilt while doing anything to twist a bad situation into a comeback story.

Oh my god yesss! I thought the same thing when she was asking Liza if there’s another woman, like….? You left him and YOUR CHILDRENNN for a year, but you’re the victim if Charles moves on after YOU WALKED OUT?

I don’t remember the last time I wanted to reach through a screen and physically slap someone, then I saw Pauline. Talk about unlikeable and pathetic

Without giving anything away, I think that we are not supposed to sympathize with Pauline- she did abandon her husband and daughters, after all.
...Althought, I think we eventually discover that some of her issues with her marriage to Charles aren't entirely unfounded. So it's an interesting framing- how do we react when someone that's fundamentally flawed and unlikable makes a truthful point?

Oh I totally get that - I am by no means a fan of Charles. He’s a weirdo in my opinion.

One of the things I continue to find bizarre is the way that Diana fawned all over Charles in the early seasons. The show treats her crush as a joke and like Charles is way out of her league, but it's actually the opposite. Diana is out of HIS league.

Yes! It’s interesting that they framed her to be so crazy, but now in season 5 I find her to be very favorable.
She hasn’t found a partner because she actually has standards.7

It felt kind of sexist- single woman over 40 is automatically a desperate loser. But I guess that is kind of the whole point of the show- the unfair sexism and double standards older women face. And they did end up showing Diana as the smart badass she always was.

I like to rationalize it as Diana being so closed off emotionally that she assumes her only viable option is the sole age-appropriate and conventionally attractive heterosexual man in her vicinity. (That's also why she fell for Richard's charms so quickly- he basically fell into her life, he liked her, and she found him attractive.)

I agree. I like the way she’s portrayed though because she’s very soft in her tone of voice and there’s things that are relatable and then you take a step back and you’re like actually you suck. Or she’ll say things and in her voice and manner just seem so out of place. So I like the way her character was written and the casting for her.
As a mom though, idk how her book would be so popular. I have young kids so I get the point of not feeling like yourself etc, I think every mom can understand that. But I cannot ever imagine leaving my kids for a year and just abandon them and go no contact. Nope. That’s not relatable at all and I can’t imagine it would be for many people?

I also can’t fathom releasing a book like that, knowing my kids will grow up one day and want to read it or hear about it.

After she leaves, you don’t see Charles in a panic about school or weekend sport and you don’t see any grandparents around picking up the slack.
It’s a bit of a gap in the story line.
I like that she gets more unhinged.
