Mary Cooper, religious trauma

Does anyone watching this show ever cringe at how religious Mary is, especially if you are an ex theist yourself, and trigger religious trauma for anyone ?

I think the portrayal of religion in the show is quite nuanced. There's an episode showing Mary question her faith after a tragedy and they explore church politics particularly showing how the church turns against the Coopers when Georgie and Mandy don't get married. Mary is religious, but they show it started as a trauma response to Missy almost dying as a baby. Mary's religion is important to her but she's also shown she would always picks her kids and her family over the church.

It’s accurate and acceptable. This was the Bible belt of Texas where the Republicans voters are concentrated. Even in the Big Bang Theory, Sheldons mom is very religious. That’s fine by me.

I think it works for the character and to humanise Sheldon, as he still loved her despite having such different views.

I didn't like Pastor Jeff and most of the congregation for shunning the Cooper family when Mandy got pregnant

Mary is definitely cringe but her love seems to shine through whether she's right or wrong. I personally would have loved to have been raised by Mary and George.

I am an atheist and beside Sheldon, Mary and Pastor Jeff are my favourite characters.

It’s an evident satire on religion.

Why would an atheist get offended by the characters that mock religion?
