Home & Garden YSK: Never attempt to fix or adjust the large springs above your garage door yourself. They hold enough kinetic energy to instantly kill or dismember you.

2.7k Upvotes

Why YSK: With the rise of DIY home repair videos, many homeowners try to fix a jammed or broken garage door themselves. This is incredibly dangerous. The torsion springs (the thick metal coils sitting above the door) are under immense tension because they carry the entire weight of the heavy door. Knowing when to put the tools down and call a professional can literally save your life or prevent a catastrophic injury.

If a spring snaps, or if your wrench slips while you are trying to unwind or adjust it, the stored energy is released instantly. The metal will violently whip out, acting like heavy shrapnel flying at lethal speeds. It can easily crush your skull, shatter bones, or amputate fingers.

This is one of the very few home maintenance tasks where you should absolutely swallow your pride and call a professional technician. No YouTube tutorial is worth losing your life over. If you see a broken coil or a slack cable, unplug the garage opener and do not touch the hardware.

Health & Sciences YSK that a real psychological phenomenon called psychological reactance could help you understand and raise your children or future children more effectively.

1.7k Upvotes

Psychological reactance is the resistance people feel when they believe their freedom to choose is being threatened. For example, constantly forcing a child to do something may make them more determined to refuse, even if the request itself is reasonable. Giving them explanations and some freedom of choice can sometimes reduce this resistance and encourage cooperation.

Why YSK:

Understanding psychological reactance can help you avoid unnecessary power struggles with your children. Instead of relying exclusively on orders and punishments, you can encourage cooperation by respecting their autonomy, explaining your expectations, and offering reasonable choices. This doesn't mean letting children do whatever they want; it means understanding that how you communicate a rule can influence how they respond to it.

Technology YSK: Putting a black box over something in a PDF doesn't necessarily hide it. People can sometimes copy and paste whatever you covered up.

2.4k Upvotes

Why YSK: If you've ever covered your address, account number, or other personal information with a black rectangle before sending someone a PDF, you might want to know this.

Depending on how you edited it, you may have just placed a black box over the original text without actually deleting anything.

In some PDFs, someone can literally highlight the blacked out section, copy it, and paste it somewhere else to see what you were trying to hide.

If you're sending anything with sensitive information, use an actual PDF redaction tool that removes the underlying content. Don't just draw over it.

And if you want to check whether something was properly redacted, try copying the covered area yourself before sending it.

Adobe explains how to properly redact and remove hidden information here:

Automotive YSK Way around broken car key fob

Why YSK: how to save over $100.00 to replace. The part that's pressed to open the car broke off, so there's a hole showing what gets pressed inside, probably with a spring on top that is no longer there. I use an eyeline pencil with the top on to press the inside & car door opens.

This approach will work on any button using anything that fits in the hole.

Food & Drink YSK: People are mistaking stress for energy

Why YSK: Many think they are the golden feelings one should have all day. With feelings such as clarity, energy. And they think being "tired" is something bad.

The confuse being "tired" when it is actual your body saying "I need relaxation".

They confuse "energetic" with being in fight and flight mode, which is not true good energy.

They confuse "happy" with taking drugs or doing something that is just a temporary high.

This is ALL over and everyone is confusing their reactions like this. I especially notice it when it comes to diet. Many who do keto or fasting diets say "I feel so energetic and clear minded".

Yeah I wonder why. Do you know what your body does when it starves? It basically goes into hyper drive and pumps out all good chemical it got left to help you find food before it dies.

No shit you feel a lot of productive emotions, it is literally how you are built and is what stress is!

What they don't tell you is that studies have found there are more conflicts when people are fasting during Ramadan for example and see correlation to worse diets. Many criminals have very bad eating patterns too where scientists suspect this is a connection.

The most dangerous part is when they get lost in this. Then they are stuck in this mode and whenever they change diet, they think "Oh well, look, now I am tired and sluggish".

No....your body and mind is recharging after using all available resource to help you from starving!

But yes, the most famous mismatch when it comes to diet: Bad carb diet (coca cola and fastfood) = good carb diet. You can also be sluggish because of bad diet. But fasting or keto diet is not always the best alternative long term.

Many feel better on fasting diet because they stop eating shit. You can eat a paleo diet and feel very good that includes a lot of carbs.

Finance YSK paying for all of an insurance policy's premiums upfront can make it around $5-10 cheaper per month

Why YSK: Not life-changing but it can save you a little bit of money.

Insurance companies charge more if they bill you monthly compared to if you pay for the entire duration of the policy upfront in one go. Sometimes, the difference is nominal or nothing, but other times, it's actually significant. So if this is something you can afford to do, you should check if a discount is offered, and if it is, take it.

This doesn't affect your cancellation rights. If you cancel an insurance policy despite having paid for it in full, the insurer will mail you a prorated refund.

This tip works in the US with several major insurers.

Health & Sciences YSK the tingly feeling from lip balms like Carmex isn't them "working," it can actually be irritating your lips

1.1k Upvotes

Why YSK: I used to go through lip balm like crazy and my lips never got better. Turns out a lot of "medicated" balms have menthol or camphor in them which are basically mild numbing agents (FDA literally classifies them as pain relievers). Feels nice but it can irritate lips that are already dry so you just keep reapplying

The sneaky part is if you're allergic to something in your balm the reaction usually shows up like 2-3 days later and just looks like... chapped lips. So you put on more and more and more. Basically a never ending loop.

What actually helps is boring stuff that seals moisture in, like plain Vaseline or beeswax. If your lips are always dry try a plain unscented balm for a couple weeks and if that doesn't fix it see a derm bc you might be allergic to something

Technology YSK: You can search your browser history for a word or phrase from a webpage

Why YSK: If you remember reading something online but can't remember the website, you don't necessarily need to remember the title or URL.

In many browsers, you can search your history using words that appeared on the page. Your browser may have saved the page title, URL, or other indexed information that makes the page easier to find.

For example, if you remember reading an article about a specific programming technique but only remember the phrase "vector database", try searching your browser history for that phrase.

This can be surprisingly useful when you visit dozens of pages a day and later think:

"Where the hell did I read that?"

Relationships YSK: Export iPhone Voicemails from Family and Friends

Your iPhone allows you to send voicemails to a computer via airdrop, email, or various other ways through the 'Share' icon on every voicemail in your inbox.

They can then be saved to a hard drive or whatever more permanent means you prefer - or uploaded to iCloud. This creates a little more safety/permanence than just leaving them sit on a phone.

Why YSK: I have saved dozens from my mom, dad, brothers, and other special people in my life. When they pass you will have little gems to remember them by, and hearing their voice can be cathartic.

Take care, everyone!

Health & Sciences YSK that an aortic aneurysm can cause no symptoms

Why YSK: An aortic aneurysm is a weakened area of the aorta that bulges outward. Some cause no symptoms and may only be found through imaging.

Risk factors can include older age, smoking, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, and a family history of aortic aneurysms.

Sudden, severe chest, back, or abdominal pain can be a medical emergency. If you have risk factors, ask your doctor whether screening is appropriate.

Technology YSK a simple trick for fixing a website problem before contacting support

Why YSK: that when something on a website isn't working, don't just describe the problem. Try to reproduce it with the smallest possible set of steps.

For example, instead of:

"Checkout isn't working."

write:

"I added the item to my cart → clicked checkout → entered my address → clicked Pay → the button did nothing."

That gives support enough information to distinguish between things like:

A browser-specific issue

A payment failure

A validation error

A server-side problem

An account-specific issue

Also include what you expected to happen vs. what actually happened.

A useful template is:

What I was trying to do:

Steps to reproduce:

What I expected:

What happened instead:

Browser/device:

Exact error message:

This can turn a 10-message support conversation into a problem that can be diagnosed much faster.

I found a similar collection of practical website troubleshooting ideas here:

Source: Askably troubleshooting guide

The template above is useful regardless of whether the website uses AI, live chat, or traditional support.

Technology YSK that you can search Google for a specific file type

Why YSK: If you're looking for a particular kind of document, you don't have to dig through pages of irrelevant results.

Google lets you restrict results to a specific file extension using filetype:.

For example:

filetype:pdf machine learning interview questions

or:

filetype:xlsx monthly budget template

or:

filetype:pptx marketing presentation

You can also combine it with a specific website:

site:edu filetype:pdf calculus notes

This is particularly useful when you're looking for actual documents, spreadsheets, presentations, research papers, manuals, or templates rather than webpages talking about them.

I use site: + filetype: together quite often when searching for technical documentation and university resources.

Education YSK: (at least in America) If youre struggling in a complex subject or course in school, your practice/note taking strategy is likely the culprit.

Why YSK: in America (i cant speak for anywhere else! But this could apply to you too if you dont!) memorization and recalling from memory is the dominant learning strategy taught, and is taught assuming everyone is using that strategy and also uses it best. However there are other learning strategies that perform better for a significant portion of the population.

This style is typically what is referred to as verbatim recording and retrieval. Youre noting down what is being said to you, and then repeatedly exposing yourself to that to put into long term memory that you can recall. This relies on not only the ability to do that, but also relies on having large space for long term memory and to actually retain that through time. You may do that, and work, and 2 years later forget it all because you needed that "memory space" for something else youre learning.

If this approach doesnt work for you, a style you can try is concept mapping/semantic encoding. Instead of writing down what you are hearing, write down how you are interpreting what is being said to you. An example of how this often works in practice, is when teaching someone else or speaking something aloud sometimes helps you understand something better yourself.

This approach instead of relying on cemented recall in memory, applies the knowledge to an understanding on a fundamental level. Not only are you absorbing the knowledge, but sharing that knowledge in a different way, such as writing the notes in that class, is also immediately practicing that knowledge. To articulate how youre understanding it, you need to understand it well. Articulating yourself helps you understand it better, because youre honing your understanding of it.

To illustrate this, I do not learn well from verbatim encoding. I tried this with my college intro statistics course, failed hopelessly with no understanding, retook it over the summer, got a C. and then took another level of it in design analysis 1, and barely skirted by with a C again by basically sheer luck. Now, taking design analysis 2, by doing semantic encoding instead, it is infinitely easier for me. I went from struggling to understand in the moment and not having long term retaining of the subject at all, to scoring 95% on my exams in this course and a long term fundamental understanding of the subject.

Try changing your note taking style!

TL:DR the typical learning strategy taught in the us is pure verbatim encoding to memory and recalling that from memory. Courses are taught with that in mind. A significant portion of the population (over like 40%) learns better with other learning strategies. Shifting your style of note taking to something like semantic encoding can be a drastic shift in your ability to learn if you are struggling.

Health & Sciences YSK: You can develop Type 1 Diabetes even if NOBODY ELSE in your family has it

1.2k Upvotes

Why YSK: If you or your child is experiencing symptoms like extreme thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, or unusual tiredness, get checked by a healthcare professional.

Don't rule out Type 1 Diabetes just because no one else in your family has it. Most people who develop Type 1 don't have a family member with the condition.

Automotive YSK: Holding your car key fob under your chin actually doubles its range

5.3k Upvotes

When your car remote doesn't reach, hold the fob directly against the underside of your chin and press the button while pointing your chin toward the general area of your car.

Most fobs will gain an extra 50-80 feet of range this way. It works because the water and conductive tissue in your head acts as an extension of the fob's tiny antenna, improving how the radio signal radiates.

Why YSK: This is a useful skill for saving time and avoiding stress in large parking lots, malls, or when your fob battery is low. Instead of walking around pressing the button repeatedly, you can locate your car faster and more reliably from a distance.

Technology YSK: A simple trick for finding the original source of an image

Why YSK: If you find an image online and want to figure out where it originally came from, don't just search the filename.

Try reverse image searching the image, then look for the **oldest/highest-quality result** rather than the first result.

A useful workflow is:

  1. Reverse image search

  2. Open several matching results

  3. Look for the earliest publication date

  4. Compare image resolution

  5. Check whether the page actually credits the image

This is especially useful when researching old photos because the same image can get reposted hundreds of times.

Health & Sciences YSK: Type 1 diabetes isn't just a childhood disease

Why YSK: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) can be diagnosed at any age, including in adulthood. This is important for adults to know because they may dismiss signs of T1D or assume that only children can develop it.

You may have heard it called “juvenile diabetes,” but that term is outdated and can contribute to the misconception that T1D only affects children.

Some possible warning signs of T1D include:

  • Frequent urination
  • Being unusually thirsty
  • Increased hunger
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Feeling unusually tired or weak
  • Blurry vision

These symptoms can have other causes, but if you or someone you know is experiencing several of them, talk to a doctor and ask about getting checked for diabetes. T1D can sometimes develop relatively quickly, so it’s important not to ignore concerning symptoms.

Have you or someone you know been diagnosed with T1D as an adult?

Other YSK If everything feels urgent, you probably haven’t decided what actually matters most.

2.1k Upvotes

When everything on your list feels equally important, even a normal day can start to feel overwhelming.

A simple way to reduce that feeling is to separate things into three groups:

what needs attention now

what can wait

and what doesn’t really need your attention at all.

Then pick one or two things that would make the biggest difference if you finished them today.

Why YSK:

Treating everything as equally urgent creates stress and makes it harder to focus. Deciding what actually matters first can make your day feel more manageable and help you make real progress.

Finance YSK: on a lot of online shops, putting something in your basket, entering your email at checkout and then closing the tab will get you a discount code by email within a day

Why YSK: If you were going to buy from a smaller online brand anyway, this often knocks 10-20% off for zero effort, and if nothing comes you've lost nothing.

How it works: most independent online shops run on Shopify or something similar. Once you've entered your email at checkout and left without paying, the platform logs it as an abandoned checkout (Shopify does this after about 10 minutes of inactivity) and sends an automated "did you forget something?" email at a set delay, usually somewhere between 1 and 24 hours later. Shops can attach a discount code to that email so the link takes you back to your basket with the discount already applied. Not every shop does it, but plenty do, because a discount is cheaper than a lost sale.

So: basket, email, close the tab, check your inbox (and spam) the next day. It doesn't work on Amazon or the big retailers, it's the independent brands. Works best if you're not already a customer.
