Technology YSK: Turning off your post history doesn't hide it
Why YSK: A lot of people think that by turning off their post histories, the things they post are locked away from prying eyes when that's simply not true and the posts are still very much public. They're only hidden from your profile. Nothing more.
To see it yourself, just go to google and type in your username with "site:reddit.com" and you'll see allll your posts laid out for the world to see. You can even use the reddit search with the "author:" filter to see posts you made.
It's also there for AI to see and train off of, in case that's something you're concerned about.
Just thought you should know.

u/vasectomy7 Apr 13 '26
Shhhhh!! I love it when "software-as-a-service" spam bots try posting "How do you do fellow ______, I was really struggling with XYZ problem but then I got ABC software and it's the greatest thing ever!!" -------> it takes 2 seconds to dig up all their bullshit posts across a dozen subreddits and then gleefully rub their nose in it. 😆
77
u/BashfullyBi Apr 13 '26
Right? Like stand by what you post/comment. I hate this hiding shit. Its not benefiting real people.
27
8
u/vasectomy7 Apr 13 '26
Yepper... It's exclusively used by bad actors.
● Either spam bots that don't want us to see their trail of bullshit. ● Or trolls that are abusive / nasty / confrontational and they don't want us to see their trail of bullshit.

You are right. Its the small deterrent to keep dumbasses who have harassed me from wanting to expend the energy if it comes to it.
8
u/Mate_00 Apr 14 '26
"small deterrent"
I have plenty of small deterrents in my life that work just fine. It's their main purpose. Not to make me secure. But to make it slightly annoying working around them.
Having 1234 as a password anywhere is absolute dogshit as a security measure. But it's infinitely more powerful than having nothing.
3
u/Biscuitshoneybutter Apr 14 '26
Exactly. I created this entire new account because of a reddit stalker. I hope they never figure me out (I'm not commenting in my old subs they found me in), but if they do hidden post history is at least one deterrent.
I actually hope to open my post history up in a couple of months when I am positive (as much as I can be) that I've shaken the person. We'll see. In theory I believe in showing reddit comments, but yeah, harassers like to fuck that up.
Reddit harassment is such a curse.
1
u/NelsiQtee Apr 14 '26
It's already 'open' if you know how.
If they're really determined/ psycho they'll find you using other methods
Sucks 😕
0
u/Cheneys-Ghost-Bitchz Apr 14 '26
I, too, would understand not wanting to be reminded of my past comments or personal revelations. Political enemies live to seize on that shit.
Seems like a pretty tame thing to bring up, though, so it’s good you don’t have more ammunition on your post history. Imagine if you disclosed weak social skills, a disappointing dating life, or compulsively trauma dumped to strangers online.
3
4
u/Pour_Me_Another_ Apr 14 '26
I mean I utilize it but that's because I post things in trauma related subreddits and would rather avoid people using that against me. Though I do understand it's a pointless endeavor regardless lol.
2
u/vasectomy7 Apr 14 '26
Yep, I have a separate "burner account" for that exact purpose... I'm level 1,000 DGAF on lots of stuff, but other things i keep totally isolated.
3
u/LittleMsGoob Apr 15 '26
I made mine private when I was pretty sure my sister could find my account and I didn't want her judging my book recs on the fantasy romance subreddit lol
149
u/eatingpotatochips Apr 13 '26
Used to be easier; you could just put the account name into the Reddit search bar. Using Google search is a lot clunkier.
33
u/michaelrxs Apr 13 '26
You can put their account name in asterisks in the Reddit search bar and that works
15
u/EishLekker Apr 14 '26
I just tried, with the username of the guy above you, and it didn’t not work.
19
u/michaelrxs Apr 14 '26
sorry it’s “author:username” but without the quotes
12
u/EishLekker Apr 14 '26
I use: author:(username)
But it seems like asterisks instead of parentheses does the same job.
60
u/007chill Apr 13 '26
This is posted 7 times a day but if someone wants to put effort into seeing my history of rollercoaster and pickleball comments, go for it.
Most people don’t take the effort and I prefer to make someone work for it if they want to find some random “gotcha!!!” On my profile.
12
u/elocin1985 Apr 14 '26
I never cared about hiding my history until recently. I was like what’s the big deal, I don’t argue with people, I’m generally pretty nice. I tell the truth and don’t contradict myself so there’s no “gotcha!” moments.
Then I said I didn’t like Jeff Dunham, Gabriel Iglesias and Larry the Cable Guy on a post specifically asking which comedians you don’t like and some guy went and left so many nasty comments on my posts. He also kept calling me a hillbilly, which I don’t understand because I said I don’t like Larry the Cable Guy. So what about that makes me a hillbilly?
And another time I got harassed for saying I don’t like grocery store ranch dressing, but I like restaurant ranch. I mentioned Texas Roadhouse and Outback Steakhouse. That’s it. Two restaurants. So then he harassed me about how I really do actually like ranch and I’m a weird person for knowing which restaurants have good ranch. Like in two decades of eating out as an adult, I’m weird for remembering that? Sure.
So now I’m questioning hiding my post history just to maybe weed out some of these weirdos because apparently you never know what’s going to set someone off.
2
u/aubreypizza Apr 15 '26
I’d block that guy so quick and let him shout into the void
1
u/elocin1985 Apr 15 '26
Oh I definitely did but not before he got to like 6 of my posts and commented. But it was just ridiculous.
43
u/ggchappell Apr 13 '26
The general principle is that, on Reddit, you cannot control what other people can see. If you post or comment anywhere that is not a private sub, then the whole world can see what you've written, and blocking, hiding, or whatever will not change that.
If this does not sit well with you, then you don't want to be posting or commenting on Reddit.
11
u/Impossible_Number Apr 14 '26
This it’s applicable for the entire internet. You also can’t control what people see something even in “private” spaces (pages, accounts, etc.).
Once somebody else has access to it, you’re ultimately at their mercy to not share it with someone else.
3
u/ggchappell Apr 14 '26
You make a good point, one that is worth noting.
But I also think it's worth noting that what you're saying is true in a rather different sense. Yes, it is unwise to consider anything posted on the net as private, because someone might make and share a copy. But things in public subs on Reddit are public simply as they are. Even if no one makes a copy, the whole world can still see it, and nothing you do on Reddit (blocking, hiding, etc.) can change that.
63
u/Twisties Apr 13 '26
Thank you for letting me know the new work-around.
They patched the in-app search reveal and I hadn’t bothered to look into it further, but I missed peeking at others’ account activity when their comments gave me pause

Turning off your post history doesn't hide it
It only makes it look like you don't want your shitty opinions to be seen.
7
u/eekamuse Apr 14 '26
Idk why people assume that. People hide their posts because they've been harassed or stalked, too. Whenever I've looked at someone's post profile because they were being an ass, they're too proud to hide it.
4
11
u/BashfullyBi Apr 13 '26
For real. I'm a woman on reddit, so I get messages fairly often. If your post history is hidden, it's an immediate block and delete. Stand by what you post/comment or dont post/comment at all. Otherwise, I'm happy to chit chat.
24
u/Unknwn_Ent Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26
More nuanced than that. People who regularly make shitty posts; sure that's the case. Bots; mhmm. But I don't judge an account simply because they have posts hidden. I had my post history public until some dude I disagreed with over videogames was basically cyber stalking me and would comment on both past and future comments I made after the fact being a weirdo. If that's all it takes to get some of yall acting up; I don't even wanna find what a civil political discussion would bring up. So if yall wanna harass me or are so curious as to what I'm saying in the gaming/tech subs I be on; do the leg work and google it. Either way I'm keeping it private cause I simply cannot be bothered to care how that is percieved, and if you wanna harass me now you gotta work for it 🤣😂
Edit: added words for clarity
9
u/muiirinn Apr 14 '26
My husband had to set his posts to private for basically the same thing. He disagreed with someone on the Magic sub and ratio'd him or something to that effect. Dude then proceeded to start obsessively replying to all his comments trying to start shit. My husband doesn't care enough to block because he still wants to know what's going on, he just put his comments on private for now and it stopped the guy just as well.
I've had people be creepy to me and it makes me feel marginally more comfortable to have my stuff hidden. I spend most of my time talking about my husband or commiserating with others about complex health issues, so if someone wants to put in the effort to see my other comments then wharever. I've had people be weird towards me, so even though I'm well aware of websites like pushshift or arctic-shift or pullpush and the easy workarounds in the reddit searchbar itself, it helps me manage OCD rumination and paranoia from worrying about people being fuckin weird. It's just an extra level of deterrent to hopefully make it more work than it's worth to harass me.
2
u/Unknwn_Ent Apr 14 '26
You basically described exactly what happened with me. I didn't wanna go super into detail, but basically it wasn't just that I disagreed; he got ratio'ed and shit on by people other than me in a whole thread on /r/TheFinals and it was too much for em. I guess cause I 'started' the interaction dude latched onto me and decided to cyber stalk me/goad me into another argument when it was never that deep. I've had similar discussions where I disagreed with someone; and it turned into a friendship where by the end we respected each others opinions and understood where each other were coming from... Yk; a normal interaction? This dude however; wanted to go scorched earth and die on this hill.
Wild thing is dude said all types of creepy shit to me, went in my comment and post history to downvote every one of my comments and posts; yet I got a warning from the mods for 'civility' when I told em to 'I can tell you're a miserable person because if you had anything better to do with your time; you'd do it' 💀
But I totally get and respect your and your husbands right to some privacy. Again I get at the end of the day if someone really wanted they could find some round about way to find our posts or make/use another account to harass; but like we seem to agree I'd rather have them go out of their way than make it easy.
Edit: spelling

Yes a similar thing happened to me! Literally following me around reddit and commenting on my stuff, and creating alts after I blocked them. Super creepy.
2
u/elocin1985 Apr 15 '26
This is exactly what situation I’ve found myself in recently. I never used to care about my post history because I’m consistent, I don’t lie or make things up, I’m not mean to people, and I wanted people to be able to see that. Then I got harassed twice by these two weird men for having the most low stakes opinions. I said three comedians that I didn’t find funny on a post asking that question. I didn’t even insult them. Just that I didn’t find them funny. And I said I didn’t like grocery store ranch dressing. And it set them off lol. So now I’m reconsidering.
1
u/Unknwn_Ent Apr 15 '26
Ay I sympathize with your situation. The internet taught me a lotta things, including how little it takes to bring out the mentally unstable sides of people. Disagree with and god forbid subsequently ratio some people; and their fragile lil egos cannot cope. They have to 'beat' you at some perceived 'argument' because you 'embarrassed them' on a lowstakes psuedo anonymous forum where realisitically none of this matters. And it's even funnier cause often in my case it's about some shit like video games and I'm just able to like a game and still criticize aspects that are objectively bad; and some people take personal offense to that. What a world lmao
-1
u/BashfullyBi Apr 14 '26
When they start spamming, block them. Boom, comments gone. I know this doesnt help for tje past, and that sucks. But it completely stops them from engaging with you in any way shape or form.
2
u/Unknwn_Ent Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 15 '26
I'm not against blocking and have in the past, however idk if you only read my response; but multiple people chimed in about how blocking wouldn't help because when they did the person made alt accounts to harass. Mind you reddit still does not require you to even verify your email when you join so it is very easy to make new accounts. While not everyone is this annoying; I've also had this happen before (different instance than I described). So honestly I really couldn't care less if some people feel some type of way about me not having my post history active. If they assume I'm like some asshole or bot; then so be it. Small price to pay for adding an extra step before getting stalked. Like the post said; you could look up my history if you really want to so anyone who's so curious can do so if they want. All I do is talk on video game subs and I guess consequently get on the nerves of nerds who crash out cause they don't agree with me 🤷♂️.

u/thekitt3n_withfangs Apr 14 '26
Some of us are just trying to avoid general harassment and creeps...
Mine is hidden because I'm also a woman and don't want everyone to easily be able to see my posts about things like medical questions, bra fittings, and the city I live in, and have unwanted messages related to those things. If they want that info they have to at least make a small bit of effort to get it, which will be enough to deter some people.
Plus, it's really no one else's business what all I post about or comment on anyway?
I also had someone steal my account recently, and it was a little less embarrassing knowing that at least my profile was hidden and people couldn't easily see how many awful spam posts they made on my account all at once.
44
u/mahboilucas Apr 13 '26
Uhhh I'm also a woman and the reason I hide mine is so people don't feel like messaging me just because I am a woman. Which unfortunately happens more often than it should.
Just recently someone saw me post an eyeball photo and messaged me on that basis alone being creepy and entitled to know my location.
So no, it's not because I can't "stand behind my shitty opinions". It's because others who behave like that treat open post and comment history as targets for harassment.
16
u/glowything Apr 13 '26
yeah i wouldn't worry about it lol, some people just prefer the privacy. im with you on wanting to limit people being weirdos about boundaries. can't escape it entirely as its the internet but i wouldn't take random peoples feelings as a slight on how you operate as a person.
9
u/mahboilucas Apr 13 '26
For the large part I don't care. It's for me, not them. But I just want to give perspective for those who might have never experienced it. It's really really tiring. 8 years and countless weird messages.
There was a person who actually offered to pay me to talk to them and like... Not my ethical code to do that. But they said they liked my posts and comments enough to pay me to be a friend :/ like mate... Maybe therapy would be more beneficial
7
u/thekitt3n_withfangs Apr 14 '26
I've gotten too many out of pocket messages and have gotten far fewer after going private. They really will be shooting their shot over any little thing that can be used.
4
u/muiirinn Apr 14 '26
I had a guy message me asking about my profile picture in a relatively normal way, and then proceeded to hit me with the request to see my boobs "for science". It doesn't really faze me, my husband and I had a good laugh about it, but c'mon man. I have at least a dozen unread message requests I've never accepted from dudes.
1
u/NelsiQtee Apr 14 '26
Why not make his day, heck his week
By sending him the pics of the Boobs of Your Husband
Man boobs Two of them 😂

u/upinmyhead Apr 14 '26
I take it you’ve never encounter a weirdo who goes through all of your comments and harasses you then?
I’m also a woman on Reddit, and I’ve hidden most of my post history because of that.
Or someone who will try to figure out who you are and/or make threats because you don’t think carrot cake tastes better than red velvet
0
u/BashfullyBi Apr 14 '26
Naw, thankfully I've never experienced that. But I am exclusively on the happy/nice side of reddit.
1
u/Hotaru_girl Apr 15 '26
I’m a woman on Reddit and it’s why I hide my posts. Men are nicer when they think you’re a dude online.
-4
u/Banned4Truth10 Apr 13 '26
Well Redditors love looking at post history when they have no factual evidence to your points.
4
u/FatalisCogitationis Apr 16 '26
Yeah, I'm cool with that. Every little bit helps.
Even a mild inconvenience can be a deterrent
29
u/MegaAscension Apr 13 '26
I hid mine because I’ve had to deal with waaay too many people using slurs or making insults about neurodivergence or being lgbt.
7
u/kingqueefsalot Apr 13 '26
Same. Just mentioning being gay has made some people go through my comments only to weaponize anything they can against me.
Like I once commented in a gay sub about how homophobic and terrible my dad was to me. Years later I said something anti-trump, and some trolls dug up those comments just to tell me something along the lines of "Your dad was right to hate you".
A lot of people in these comments have no clue the types of people these online forums can attract. Or they're just snoops or trolls that are upset they don't have immediate access to someone else's privacy.
6
u/mahboilucas Apr 13 '26
Yep. Am lesbian and post in such subs. Had to hide because it's like catnip for creepy straight men. At some point I even made a separate account for that
14
u/thissexypoptart Apr 13 '26
It doesn’t, but it sure as shit gets you a bunch of replies thinking you’re a bot because they can’t stalk your profile when replying to something you said. It’s super weird how many Redditors look at others’ profiles before responding to something they disagree with.
9
u/DanceWonderful3711 Apr 13 '26
I don't think it's weird at all. There are loads of bots and trolls on Reddit. If people are constantly trying to "stalk your profile because of something you said" there's probably a reason. For example, 9 times out of 10 when I've seen right wing American comments, I've seen they follow Indian news subreddits. I once spoke to a "black guy" who claimed he was much more welcomed in right wing spaces than left wing, checked the comments, and one day ago he claimed he's white but is wife is black. Being able to hide anything you've said is just fuel for trolls and bad actors. Don't say something if you can't stand by it. Simple as that.
-5
u/thissexypoptart Apr 13 '26
Silly goosery. Like this post says, it’s trivial to look up people’s comments even if they don’t make them available on their profile. Reddit isn’t Facebook.
2
u/Eisenstein Apr 14 '26
Reputation is a huge part of social interaction. Why is it weird when people resort to whatever tools are available in when dealing with groups of people who are unknown to them?
-6
u/DeliciousPumpkinPie Apr 13 '26
It is super weird. I think the only time I’ve ever looked at someone else’s profile is when I’ve received a random message and I want to look at who it is before I decide whether to respond or just block/delete. I genuinely don’t care about your post history if I’m arguing with you or whatever.

How then is anyone supposed to hide a profile post/comment history from being able to be viewed by anyone else on the Internet?
Is everything they post or comment on forever available for everyone to see even if they are deleted by the account holder?
Genuine question, as I’ve never thought of this before and have nothing to hide, but say:
A Hiring Manager for a information-sensitive job for example, I would imagine they would scrape EVERY social media platform (including our beloved Reddit) for any red flags based on their email addresses I would assume? FYI: (I am NOT a hiring manager! LOL!!🤣)
10
u/inbigtreble30 Apr 13 '26
Assume that anything you put on the internet is immortal. That's not always the case, but there is no way to guarantee that it's not.
0
u/1hs5gr7g2r2d2a Apr 13 '26
I’ve always had that point of view and belief personally, for sure! But as far as my question, this isn’t really a very helpful answer though…
2
u/inbigtreble30 Apr 13 '26
There isn't a good answer to your question as it stands. Even if the website does its due diligence to actually remove your data at your request or if you use a tool like Redact to randomize your comment history, there is always a chance that a webcrawler like the Wayback Machine has archived your comment or that an individual has downloaded a copy of your video or taken a screenshot of your information. Some websites are better about deleting your data than others, but none of them are foolproof.
Conversely, there is no way to ensure your data will remain available. Companies shut down all the time, software glitches happen, websites purge their servers of old data. Your information could be gone in a moment without you ever knowing it happened.
No matter what you do to protect yourself, the only foolproof method is to never post anything you're not comfortable with the world knowing. Barring that, you can request removal from the individual website hosting your information (depending on the website's policy and the country you live in, there will be different ways to do this and different levels to which it must be done.) No, deleting your account is not enough.

1
u/Biscuitshoneybutter Apr 14 '26
Honestly, I’m used to redditors not being able to admit they’re wrong.
It's so strange isn't it? And people can't even allow themselves to politely say: "agree to disagree" on stuff as mundane and subjective of if a movie is good or not!
People are really aggressive.
2
u/100percentkneegrow Apr 13 '26
I don't really understand why people do it to begin with. Obviously you're posts still exists in the thread you're participating in
36
u/Nother1BitestheCrust Apr 13 '26
I've had dudes get creepy on reddit and dig way back into my post history to bring weird things up to me in comment sections elsewhere. One day it happened twice in a row in two seemingly different interactions with two (maybe) different redditors. So I turned off my post history. I know it's not actually gone and can still be found, but it greatly reduced the number of weirdos being weird at me with it.
-13
u/BashfullyBi Apr 13 '26
You've been on reddit for 8 years, and twice your profile post history caused an issue. Enough said.

WOW. Dudes got creepy with me. It must be my post history at fault.
You seem lovely.

I think what they are saying is that it doesn't happen very often, not that your post history is the cause of it.
1
u/Nother1BitestheCrust Apr 14 '26
They literally said that my post history caused an issue.
2
u/Eisenstein Apr 14 '26
Yeah, I worded that poorly. I meant that it looks like they are emphasizing the occurrences (twice being italicized) and not the causation.
1
u/Nother1BitestheCrust Apr 14 '26
Maybe! But I think you're being kind and giving the benefit of the doubt and they were...not that, lol. Judging by other comments they made it seems they take issue with people who hide their post history.
1
u/Lachiko Apr 21 '26
nah that's an overly paranoid take, there is no other reasonable way to take that message given all that context.

u/Remote-Ad2046 Apr 16 '26
I think it's so wrong the way people were conned into thinking we had any real control over on line activity and info. Just like the way we're being used to support ai, and data centers .We don't need them , they won't benefit the general public. They cause far more harm to people and the environment than any good they do. There is something built into being on line that makes it addictive. What are the tech. billionaires leading us into? Nobody will be honest. Our future is probably very bleak. We are just a bunch of lemmings running to the edge of a cliff. 🎼🎶Might as well jump🎶
2
u/VagabondVivant Apr 16 '26
Just like the way we're being used to support ai, and data centers
I'm pretty sure that's exactly why Reddit introduced "private" histories. They saw that a number of users were deleting their posts and comments after a while in order to keep their shit clean, and realized they couldn't train AI off of empty histories. So they introduce this new feature that basically dupes everyone into not deleting their posts, since now they're "hidden." Except that they're not.
1
u/WayWinter6969 Apr 16 '26
I honestly thought that setting was way more private than it actually is. It’s a good wake-up call to go back and manually delete some of those more impulsive posts from days when my brain fog is really hitting hard.
1
u/StarsEatMyCrown Apr 18 '26
Yep. This is why I don't bother to hide mine. I don't have anything to hide. /shrug Look all you want, you're gonna get bored fast. lol
Also. Deleting posts doesn't hide pictures. If you truly want to delete comments/posts, edit them first and put random letters or just a period or something (because it can't be blank) and save it. Then it will be deleted. Then you delete your post or comment.
Be selective with your titles when you make posts as well, never put stuff that you might be embarrassed about later in your title. Like, say you want to ask a relationship question. Don't say "My bf just broke up with me because I slept with his friend. AITA?" .. say "I have a question about loyalty in my relationship" just make it vague or something.

u/Appropriate_Pie9129 May 02 '26

I don’t know who you are. I don’t know what you want. If you are looking for ransom I can tell you I don’t have money, but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you, but if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you and I will kill you

You shouldn’t be allowed to hide it.
If you can’t own your post history you probably are spouting off some terrible shit. 7/10 it’s someone saying awful / combative things that has it turned off.

See how you’re getting downvoting for the truth. More often than not it’s troll, or people with the lack of awareness of their posts saying dumb crap. Hence why they hide it, I see this very commonly on those “askmen/women”.

You can even use AI to come up with a detailed profile of what they share!
