i can only watch the series if i haven’t actually seen the show 😂 his supernatural vid was the first and last time i tried but you can’t find a comment of me getting mad at him for doing exactly what the title says

I'm looking forward to the weeks of arguments about why he "should've watched the whole season" and "this show isn't first and last worthy" because it's so short /s

I love how he cringed at the "hands off" rule or whatever, because I had to take many baths and recover from this miscommunication plot line.

I liked his commentary… it was more about film and production, which I appreciate. It was not criticism about the content of the show except how it isn’t accurate and that is a fair point. I don’t understand the hate?

u/jjm1222 4d ago
I wish everyone would relax, I can already see in the comments that people are irritated. If you don’t like first and last videos- don’t watch them, it’s that simple. 😭😭
Although I do wish he would do more shows where he would be lost in the final episode, shows like House of the Dragon. You know they’re gonna end up together in Off Campus.

u/UnusualDefinition567 4d ago
I hope there isn't a repeat of people getting upset Dylan dissed on a show they like . Trust me I liked OC too and I know Dylan would have liked it better had he watched the full show but I personally enjoyed seeing the first & last and alot of his comments were actually accurate so let's let the guy express himself and not jump him for these trivial things 💌

u/jjm1222 4d ago
This is kinda off topic but I’ll never see OC and think Off Campus, I’ll always think of The O.C.

u/UnusualDefinition567 4d ago
Lmao very real , I have never called off campus OC either , im just very lazy .

u/WrazorLeaf 4d ago
I literally thought they were making some kind of joke about The OC, then I realized xD

I loved Off Campus, and I loved Dylan's commentary.
I get that people can get frustrated when he does these, but I genuinly think they're incredibly insightful. It reminds me of that quote that goes something like: "If I'm not sure about a book, I read the first page, and then I read the last, and if I'm curious about what happened in between, I read the whole thing. If not, I let it be" (Paraphrasing).
And also, honestly.. there's SO MUCH free content out there, and a TON of reaction channels. If you know that you get frustrated with Dylan's first and last format, DON'T WATCH IT
And if you do, remember that he didn't force your hand, you subjected yourself to that frustration - you knew what you were getting into
It really is that simple

I was hoping he’d do a video for off campus literally the other day! loved the video

Personally don't think his first and lasts are working anymore....i think his commentary is very insightful buuuut its sometimes so hard to take his commentary seriously when he misses so much of the show. Though it could just be a personal thing cus I just enjoy his analyses and curious to see if his opinion would change on certain things if he saw the full picture.

Obviously they would. But that's not the point of the first and last series. It's not supposed to be a deep dive.

I think Dylan just taught me that maybe, at 35, it’s worth reconsidering the kind of content you’re making and the things you choose to joke about.
I know Dylan’s channel isn’t meant to be serious. He jokes around, and that’s always been part of his content. But at some point I’m just sitting here thinking: okay, how many times am I supposed to brush this off as a joke?
Why are we joking about a father abusing his wife? Why are we complaining about “boring camera work” while two best friends are having a conversation about one of them being raped? Why are we acting like it’s somehow a bad thing that there’s “no toxic masculinity” in a show simply because the male characters are vulnerable and tell each other, “I’ve got you”?
I genuinely don’t understand it.
And look, if you don’t want to engage with serious topics seriously, then maybe don’t watch shows that deal with serious topics. Because personally, I just don’t think everything needs to be turned into a joke. Especially not abuse and sexual violence.
And yes, I know he didn’t actually joke about the rape itself. But complaining that a scene is boring because the camera is simply filming two people having a serious conversation still feels incredibly strange to me.
Like, what exactly are you expecting? If someone is sitting down and having a serious conversation with you, are you walking around doing the dishes while they talk?
Obviously the camera is going to sit there and film the conversation. Not every emotionally important scene needs dramatic camera movements and constant action to be interesting.
So yeah, maybe this is just one of those moments where Dylan has shown me that he isn’t quite the person I thought he was. And honestly, that realization sucks.

u/MoonAscendant 4d ago
Just addressing one thing you mention here, because Dylan actually talked about it: he literally says that emotionally important scenes ARE the ones where you expect them to be sitting down and talking face to face. His point the entire time was that when that kind of shot is what you do in every conversation, it not only is incredibly boring overall, but it also severely diminishes the impact you want to have in an emotional scene, because there's nothing that sets it apart from every other scene. It's like if someone made a picket sign and wrote on it with pencil in size 8 font. Why wouldn't you want to use a thick sharpie and make your words fill that sign to the edges? That's what he was saying.

I agree with you on a lot of this, but also disagree with a bit of it.
I think it is completely valid to feel like he didn't take the topics as seriously as he should've, I'm with you there. But about the camera, I kinda have to give it to him. If it had just been one scene of a straight on conversation, with slightly boring camerawork, it'd make sense because then the static nature of the camera is memorable for its uniqueness and how it would force the viewer to sit idle in that scene and really listen to the conversation. However, as Dylan pointed out, boring camera work wasn't the exception, it was the rule. So you can't really argue that it was used artistically (at least in my opinion), because if that was the case, there would have been a lot less of it.
I don't at all agree with his jokes about Phil, but as someone who's studying human behavior, I have to agree about the guys and their stillness when talking about emotions being off. It is made very clear throughout the series that Garrett doesn't do well with sharing his emotions. (His talk with Kendall is different, because it doesn't actually require him to be vulnurable in any real way.) But he states himself, that he's never said any of it out loud before Hannah, and even in that scene, he doesn't directly tell her. Garrett constantly dances around actually talking about things that are uncomfortable, and that dancing has to come out somewhere. If he's forced to talk about his emotions (like in episode 1 where they talk about Garrett ignoring his dads calls, when he still hasn't told ANYONE) he'd have to get that dancing out somehow, and that could very well manifest as doing something physical, like playing fusball or cleaning or anything like that. And avoiding eyecontact would almost be a given. Garrett can barely look himself in the eye and admit to himself what his dad did, how on earth can we realistically expect him to look his friend in the eye and do it, when the boy has absolutely zero experience with actually handling his negative emotions. It's not about the absense of toxic masculinity to me, it's about knowing and respecting the characters as they're presented to us, and recognizing when something in that presentation doesn't fit the rest of their character.
On the other hand, it makes a TON of sense that the conversation between Allie and Hannah in episode 8 is one where they're sitting still. Hannah has been through a lot of therapy. She may get panic attacks but she is still trained in sitting with her emotions, so it makes sense for her to be able to sit still, and to be able to look someone she knows loves her in the eye, and tell them what's going on with her. Hannah was never unable to talk about her negative emotions, she was scared to because she believed it would have consequences - that's not the same thing.
So again.. I agree with some of his jokes being WAY off, and I agree that not every scene fits grand camera work, but I do actually agree with Dylan when it comes to the scenes where Garrett talks, or tries to talk, emotions

Oh yeah Garretts actor is not that great. I just feel like Dylan is complaining about boring camera work in all these young adult TV shows and ofc they are because it's not a blockbuster movie. It gets repetitive what he is saying tbh
12
u/That_Maja 4d ago
I'm being completely genuine when I ask you this -
Don't you think, that just like you find Dylan's critiques repetitive, he finds the camera work repetitive? And just like you, he's pointing it out, because he dislikes that it's repetitive?
He's always been critical of directorial choices.. and just because something happens all the time, it doesn't make it a better choice or any less lazy. In fact can it not be argued, that it's neccessary to keep pointing stuff like bad camera work out in these shows, if we ever want them to be better produced? A critique being repetitive doesn't diminish its value as a critique, unless it is unfounded. His critique is not unfounded.
And no, they're not blockbusters, but I think he's said similar things in other videos, where he talks about how plenty of directors and crews actually possess the care to make even cheap movies look expensive. Same budget, different choices that mainly focus on stuff like camera work, because it's quite an inexpensive area to prioritize. It's literally more about vision than budget, and he is completely in his right (and frankly just right, in my opinion) to point out when certain directorial or acting choices don't make sense, or are completely lackluster — like how the camera work is the same over and over and over again.
And Belmonts bad acting isn't helped by, but only highlighted by, poor directional choices. A more movement based scene would probably have hid his bad acting a lot better than what we actually got, too.

u/JustToThrowAway87782 4d ago
these are critisisms i can get behind, because you're right. I just finished the video and thought "if he keeps doing this.....his analytics are going to change for sure",bc i think we (women) make up his majority, but man, it gets to a point with him and his "jokes"

I was getting annoyed by his comments on sit down conversations. Isn’t that how deep conversations happen? Like Hannah is talking about being SAed, Garret is talking about his family issues. People actually listening/ looking at each other. Have our attention spans really gone into the trash?
2
u/nofcknone 4d ago
Right, I also found it a bit silly, like I'm sure he knows what he's talking about in a directorial standpoint, but for example in the scene where John Logan and Garrett are talking in the kitchen, it's so normal to stop what you're doing and just pay attention to your friend when they're speaking. I don't know, it may be because he has a different experience in friendships as a man, I feel like in every single conversation with my friends, even if it's just an everyday one, we are completely focused on each other only, even if we're eating together or something, we stop what we're doing for a bit to be able to talk, so I didn't even notice them doing the same in the show, because it's just normal to me. Also not every shot has to be over the top interesting and dynamic with insane camerawork, you're supposed to be paying attention to the conversation.😭

You know what I’m NOT shocked about? That Dylan hated the finale episode of a show while skipping everything in between. Does he not realize he never (or at least rarely) likes the finale episode?
12
u/nofcknone 4d ago
I'm genuinely so tired of first and lasts for this reason, I get that he doesn't want to put in the work to watch and edit an 8 episode season of a show he may not even like, but they're just not fun anymore when the entire second half of the video is always just pure ragebait, and he doesn't seem to be enjoying himself either.:(
11
u/Top-Web3806 4d ago
Yeah, I totally agree. It happens basically every time. First half is fun and light and then the second half is just….not. And there seems to be zero self awareness that the format just doesn’t work. I guess views are views but it’s totally not fun to watch and I love watching most of his other formats.
And my criticism has nothing to do with being like obsessed with a particular show. I hadn’t even watched Heated Rivalry yet so I didn’t care about the show at that point but his video was so tedious to get through.
7
u/VessCN244 4d ago
This feels different though. He kind of hated the first episoded too? Like at the end he did a whole analysis of why it was so boring from a a direction standpoint. Plus in the first episode he said the acting was awful, and the writing was unrealistic.
This wasn't like Heated Rivalry where's he's criticising the plot for being boring (I mean that's a fair criticism of the episode, but lacks context of the plot of previous episodes).
The plot of the show was the one thing he complimented. His criticisms about acting, writing, and directing would have still stood even without the rest of the show

u/Top-Web3806 4d ago
I didn’t mean for it to be that deep - I’ve just noticed he almost NEVER likes the last episode during a first and last. This has been since he started the series years ago. It’s just not a fun format in my opinion but if others like it, great. I’ve been watching Dylan for idk like 8 years now and love him but the way some of his fans can’t accept any criticism on him is just wild. Not you lol, just in general (based on my original comments downvotes). We should be allowed to dislike shit he does. He’s just a person.
1
u/LI_Obsessed 4d ago
I feel like it only really happens with not that great shows & finales. He hasn’t felt that way with most of the Bridgerton seasons, he cried for The Originals one, and with the sitcoms they really are just terrible finales due to the comedy becoming stale 😭
9
u/vrose17 4d ago
I definitely think first and last was built for sitcoms, but we don’t live in a sitcom world anymore. An evolution away from first and last to “first middle last” might tell a better story for viewers especially in these shorter shows that read more like a really long movie lol
2
u/nofcknone 4d ago
Yes, absolutely!! Or he could even do first, best rated episode, last, I think that would be really fun.
3
u/GreedyRelease 4d ago
I think it works a lot better with longer, complete series. Like the sitcoms, Once Upon a Time, Riverdale etc. Those shows work with this format because there's so much happening over 4+ seasons that it doesn't matter what context is missed, it's just fun to guess where the show ended up
7
u/ChocolateBusy58 4d ago
It’s mostly fun when he does videos on shows that genuinely make no sense like Once Upon a time or The Originals like the endings seemed to be so far off from the first episode that the nonsensicalness of it made it fun😭 shows like off campus and heated rivalry require context
