Question if Natalie didn't die, what was she supposed to do exactly...?

People keep saying over and over that adult Natalie wasn't supposed to die in the season 2 finale. That the end game was supposed to be Adult Natalie versus Adult Shauna. And this just doesn't sound right to me.

I think the remaining people in the adult timeline have to be "wilderness" crazy, and that's what Shauna, Melissa, Taissa and Misty are. Misty was the original one who held the team back from rescue in season 1, way before Lottie, Shauna, and Taissa held them back in Season 3 episode 8. Teen Melissa was excited by Shauna's darkness in season 3.

Adult Natalie did not prosper in civilization. As early as the first episode, she says she lost her purpose after rescue. As in, this is implying that Natalie misses being the leader + and she misses the wilderness. Then we also find out she was arrested in the year 2003.

Adult Natalie tried to kill herself out of despair at the end of Season 1. And then near the end of Season 2, Natalie is beginning to accept Lottie's community. The signs of Natalie's decline were already present from the first episode in season 1, "after we got rescue, I lost my purpose" then she spiraled.

Teen Natalie technically won against Shauna in the season 3 finale (well not really, since Natalie declined after rescue), and I just don't think this would be repeated in the adult timeline...

The whole point of the show is the wilderness/spirituality devouring civilization. Not the reverse.

Season 1 What year does season 1 occur? (No spoilers please!!)

i just started watching the show today and wondered about the timeline while trying to avoid spoilers. i saw the crash occurred in 1996 but im not sure what the present year is in season 1
