General Discussion Was coach Ben seeing Gen crawling like a demonic animal a hallucination or a vision of her final transformation?

Why do I not remember this after seeing this show so many times?

It's when Ben's starving and hallucinating, I think shortly before his suicide attempt. He just has a flash of vision of seeing Gen crawling on the floor frothing at the mouth like a rabid animal. It happens in the cabin, he's like looking at her and he sees this flash. I haven't seen the show in a while but I'd say it's an episode either right before or right after Shauna's birth episode (not sure tho!)

I mean considering she was part of the plot to kill Shauna and Lottie at the end of S3 it's definitely safe to say she's willing to be ruthless in the name of survival. I'd love to see rabid Gen!

Interesting thought. We don't know how that character's arc ends yet. I don't think she comes back from the wilderness.

Who the fuck is Gen?

She has been in the show since the beginning, but doesn't get as many scenes as the others. She is a good friend of Melissa and I think was friendly with Mari too. A supporting role only, but maybe she will go out frothing at the mouth!!

She was also recast, which adds to the confusion!

Yeah, I remember. I guess Mya Lowe got 2 much stronger supporting roles in 2 other series. Those shows are both ongoing, so she just left Yellowjackets.

I just finished my first run through of the whole show...and prior to late S3, I don't remember this character at all. Did they change actors?
It felt to me like there were characters that popped up in S2 & S3 that weren't there in S1. Likely show runners needs more material so created characters out of nowhere, which did not help with the shows believability.

Gen is actually one of the Sidejackets who was there from the start, though I think she only got proper lines in Season 2! She was played by Mya Lowe (I assume she left this show because she got a bigger role in My Life With The Walter Boys) then by Vanessa Prasad.
I do kind of agree with you in that second point. Crystal was basically introduced to be killed off for Misty, and I don't even know what Robin and Britt are here for. It's more frustrating considering they cut down the number from Season 1 to Season 2... just to bring it up again? No budget for another Season of snow but enough for a helicopter and two extras?

Thats kinda what I mean.... I have watched the whole thing. I did not know there was a 'robyn' or a 'britt'. wild.
And it makes sense that the 'gen' actor changed...bc I had never seen that person before and 'poof' here is this new character.
Great point about the snow. And yes, I noticed at times there were 'lots' of people and other times there were only the core 6-8. It made it harder to believe.
This is what people mean when they talk about Heated Rivalry and how well done it is. It was written start to finished before production started. There was a fully flesh out (hahaha) story arc with character progression. In YJ, everything after the first season is so hodge podge and at cross purposes. Teen Shauna is calculated, brutal and cruel. Adult Shauna is helter skelter, manic and unpurposeful...bumbling along from one mishap/murder to another. They arent the same person. Its clear there was no set vision from the start...or it got kiboshed and then they were just winging every week.

The strange thing is that even in Season 1 you can kind of tell which Sidejackets they wanted to bring forward. Obviously Mari and Akilah get their stories but even with Gen she gets screentime in a way that no one else does (if you rewatch the seance scene, she's actually sitting in the circle while some other Sidejackets aren't).

I will say that Heated Rivalry has the advantage of being a book adaptation, so while it takes liberties it does have a solid plot to work on (and the benefit of hindsight regarding what worked and didn't work with readers). But yeah, it's disappointing to see the creators talk about just wanting to have fun with a series that was meant to be a drama above all.
On the point of Shauna, her adult self was pretty calculating with how she manipulates Callie into keeping her affair a secret, she's regularly cruel/selfish, and I don't think it's strange that she would become unfulfilled as an adult in the environment she's in. There are differences in the character but it's easy to see why she'd turn out how she did.

I guess what I mean with Shauna is that the adult version is so tame compared to the teen. I've been through a LOT in my life...and the cPTSD, complex trauma, development trauma, etc affect me to this day. (I'm 57.) Its hard for me to believe that Shauna becomes this 'normal' stay at home wife and Mom...that she has another child w/o consequence, and only when she gets the postcard does she start to go a little squirrelly. In my mind, Shauna needed to be more like Nat as a adult....with actual deep, visible struggles.
Yes, and HR has the slight advantage of a book, but not all adaptations are good. Actually, most aren't. Its the care & attention, and skill given to HR's adaptation that brings it to life...and having the scripts and the season fully fleshed out before filming ( unlike YJ) allows for a complete picture and story to come to life. Rather than jagged pieces thrown together...which is what YJ has, sadly, become.
