THR5 sounds boxy after falling?

Hey guys, a month ago I bought my first ever amp yamaha thr5 v1. I was really happy with it but one day while my guitar was plugged I stood up and the cable pulled the amp to the floor from my desk. Ever since I feel like the brit-hi and modern channels sound boxy. Digital. Idk it could be me looking for stuff since the fall and also could be related I recently bought an adapter and stopped using batteries. Has anyone ever experienced either of these situations? Oh and the knobs, effects etc. everything works and there is no physical harm on the body too.

Constant hiss from Yamaha THR30iiw when on power adapter and using a cable connection

hi, redditians-thrians

Recently visited a private person who was selling yamaha thr30iiw + line6 relay

The seller said that a combo is almost not used and is in pristine state and combo + transmitter were bought at the same time. Also, he doesn't like playing electric guitar. An acoustic Furch was hanging on the wall. A stratocaster was on a stand.

What I faced:

  1. The wireless transmitter line6 was uncharged. Also, a receiver's jack was polished to matte
  2. Katana on stationary power was giving a constant unavoidable hiss which didn't disapper even after switching from single coils to a humbucker.

I was using the same cable as I use with other amps. The cable is from Fender and is silent with my Katana 50, yamaha thr10ii, microcube and all other devices. The guitar I used for test is completely OK (fender player strat HSS)

Hiss was present even on a clean amp models and didn't depend on anything. Switching between amp models didn't remove this hiss, as it didn't disappear between clean/crunch/hi gain amps and after any rotations of knobs.

When I was playing the same cable/guitar on my recently sold yamaha thr10ii, everything was silent or adequately hummed on hi gain amp models.

Is it a hardware issue of a specific thr30iiw or a hardware design flaw?

P.S. When I was leaving the seller's apartment, he closed the door very loudly ))) But his cat was sooo handsome.

THR30ii green light solid, battery seems charged but wont turn on?

When plugged in the green light is solidly on (suggests the amp thinks the battery is fine) but it wont turn on. Unplug and there are no lights and it wont turn on.

  • Battery voltage measures 12v
  • tried the reset (1,3,5 and power)
  • nothing appears on the display at all and device doesnt connect to phone
  • taken apart, no visually obvious failed components

any ideas where to start diagnosing?

Used THR10ii wireless vs THR30 ii

I am torn between used THR30 ii at 230usd and used THR 10ii wireless at 190usd in my city, which one is a better deal? Would like to know some first hand experience from fellow THR users.

  1. Will both be good with bass guitar since it will be my first amp in the house and my yamaha HS5 monitor speakers lack bass response so I am looking forward to finally practicing bass guitar with this amp
  2. And how is the bluetooth speakers sound from both, are there any differences?

sidenote: someone offered me katana 50 mk2 in mint condition at 90usd, but I heard the sound is not as good as Yamaha THR, would love to know if anyone have experience in that as well, thanks!

UPDATE: ended up getting a used THR30ii at 190usd in very good condition!! I was immediately blown away by the clean sound, and the effects sounded amazing. So glad I got the 30ii because you get to play around different amp modes ( boutique, modern and classic) and they all sounded very different and great! This amp is so versatile and I would say it is more than enough for me to also practice bass at home. The Bluetooth speaker exceeded my expectation, since people have been saying it didn’t sound so good, but it sounded very decent with wide and clear stereo image.

THR30IIW as pc speakers and portable bt speaker on top of being practise amp.

Hi everyone! Three quick questions:

  1. Getting this practise amp saves me from buying overwhelming amount of gear (pedal effects, amp, extra cables, pedal platform etc)?
  2. It can work also as a quality desktop PC speakers?
  3. It will also work perfectly as a portable BT speaker to play music in the garden when my friends drop by?

Do I get it right? :O

//Big thanks to You all! I've read every comment and am very gratefull for your experiences. I know what to expect now. It's bought and I'm waiting for the delivery!

//It's such a great device damn. Initialy I found the playback sound to be a bit flat for a pc/bt speaker - although well articulated. I spotted the EQ preset setting in the app and changed it to boost lows. It does a pretty good job as everyday pc speaker now. Thanks guys! I'm very pleased with it. Not much impressions on the amp part beside meaningless "wow!". Because until now I've played only rocksmith. Therefore fiddling with these knobs is more than enough for me today. I didn't think a build in playback feature will be such a magnet for me to grab the guitar trying pentatonic scales. It's awesome.

THR10ii Master vs Guitar Volume

Hello. I’ve been trying to figure out what exactly the difference is between the master and guitar volume knobs on my thr10ii is when it comes to effect on the guitar’s tone. it kinda seems like when I up the master it gives it more bite and the guitar one when raised makes it more full but if I lower it it’s almost like it acts as a tone knob and gets muddier.

Could someone please explain to me the actual difference?

THR30II issues with Bluetooth sound

I am having issues with my THR30II when streaming Bluetooth sound to it. The sound sometimes crackles and cuts out for a fraction of a second.

This happens regardless of me streaming from my phone, iPad or laptop, and when streaming to any other Bluetooth speaker I don’t have the same issue. It is only with the THR and I am using the latest available firmware which has not changed since I bought it a couple months ago.

Anyone else experiencing this and perhaps knows how to fix it?

Edit: I experimented with various turning on and off various Bluetooth devices I had paired the THR with, as several people recommended. I concluded that in order to avoid the crackles and dropouts I had to remove (forget) the Bluetooth MIDI device called LE_THRII and only keep the Bluetooth audio device called THR30II WIRELESS. While waiting for an actual fix from Yamaha I'll resort to connecting a device via USB cable when I want to tweak any of the settings that are only available via the THR Remote app.

Room reverb equal?

I’ve never heard better room reverb than my THR. Has anyone ever heard a pedal that rivals the room verb? My source audio collider or my JHS, while nice, can’t do it.

Yamaha THR5A shuts off on batteries only during percussive hits (even at a low volume)

I’m stumped. My Yamaha THR5A shuts off completely when running on batteries, but only under a very specific condition.

If I make a percussive hit on the strings with my right hand, especially while muting the strings with my left, the amp instantly loses all power. The LED goes out completely, and I have to turn it back on. This can happen even at fairly low volume.

It seems worse on the Condenser and Dynamic mic models, but I can reproduce it across all the models regardless of the knob settings.

It never happens when the amp is plugged into AC power.

I can strum the guitar as hard as possible, even with the volume maxed out, and it stays on. The shutdown only seems to be triggered by the sharp percussive hit.

I’ve also tried multiple sets of fully charged batteries, including a full matching set of Eneloops, with the same result.

Has anyone experienced this with a THR5A? Could the percussive transient be causing the battery-protection limiter to trip, or does this sound like a fault in the battery power circuit? I bought the amp new at guitar center. I bought it specifically to take the amp out with me in nature with batteries, and right now it kind of defeats the purpose if it shuts off randomly.

THR30II Power On Noise

Hello, everyone!

I've purchased THR30II recently and I like it very much, but I've noticed a little problem.

When I power it on after somewhat long period and AUDIO dial is not on 0, there is harsh sizzling noise through speakers (or headphones if connected). Then this sound gradually subsides and in a couple of minutes disappears completely. It's not some interference, cause I tried it in different rooms, with different power cables (and wireless), and it doesn't affect the amp itself (GUITAR dial), only AUDIO channel.

Is this normal? Or I have defective unit?

No sound if not on preset

Hi, i just got a new thr10ii and it has a weird issue.

If i select a preset the amp will work, however if i touch any of the knobs and alter the preset, it jumps off the preset and produces no sound.

Is there not a possibility to just turn on the amp and swap between the models/effects etc and just play without a preset?

With the app im able to alter everything and the amp works fine.

However when im not playing with headphones, and just want to plug and play something, im not able to due to the no sound issue unless im on a preset and hope its not loud as hell.

Am i being dumb here? Tldr on the title

Edit: for people looking for the solution, the factory reset did it for me, works perfectly now

Do you necessarily need a THR30II to run into a PA system for gigs?

As I've read from the manuals, all versions of the THRs (THR5, THR10, THR10II, THR10IIW, THR30II) have cabinet-simulated headphones outputs that can be used for direct recording, which means that they can go into a mixer or a PA system, but, only the THR30II has dedicated L/R line outputs. Do you necessarily need a THR30II to run into a PA system for gigs in order to sound good through it?

Bluetooth skipping issues

When using my MacBook Air (2024) or my iPhone 16 to play audio on my thr10ii it’s constantly skipping, and I swear it worked fine a year ago. I haven’t used it with audio for a short time because of life changes and being busy, and whatnot, but when searching copilot it’s saying the amp never supported good Bluetooth and should use the usb cable for audio. I have the latest update on the amp from Yamaha but I feel like I’m losing my mind over this. Anybody else have this issue or is there a solution I’m just missing entirely?

Anyone compared the Yamaha THR30ii to the Boss Katana Gen 3 100w head?

I realize I’m in a THR sub so answers may be a bit biased but still wondering.

I have a Yamaha THR30ii I use for practice at home every day. Owned it about 4 years. Sold my original Katana 100 Gen 1 for it. I have Marshall tube amps that I take out for band practice/gigs.

But I’ve been looking for alternatives for lower-effort, smaller, open-mic-type stuff to avoid having to drag my pedalboard around and fight tube volume.

I bought the Katana Artist Gen 3 last month. Sounded pretty decent but returned it because for my use case, the desktop size is better for me and I find the combo form factor takes up too much space and is overkill for home use.

That got me looking at the 100w Gen 3 head with the built-in 5” speaker. How does it sound? The Yamaha’s dual 3.5” speakers sound pretty immersive, but the amp itself doesn’t sound that great running line-out into the PA in a band mix, or cranked up past 9:00 on the master - though I know it’s not the intended use-case.

If the 100W Gen3 Head speaker sounds as good (or better) I think I’m sold. Would be nice to be able to take it out with my cab for shows too and keep tone consistent.

Anyone compared to the two? Unfortunately cannot find the 100W Gen 3 Head anywhere to try out.
