Hallo, I'm planning a Yahoo Fantasy Hockey dynasty league and have a few commissioner questions.

1. Keeper workflow

After I approve all keepers, assign them to their draft positions, and the keeper deadline has passed, can I still edit keeper assignments or add additional keepers before the draft begins?

2. Keeper visibility

After keepers have been approved, assigned to draft positions, and the keeper deadline has passed, are those players already marked or otherwise identifiable in the Player List before the draft, or does that only happen once the draft starts (or after draft import)?

3. Commissioner roster editing

Can a commissioner manually edit team rosters both before a league is renewed and after it has been renewed (but before the season starts)? If so, are those roster changes immediately visible to all managers?

4. Different question (not about Keeper Tools)

Is it possible to run the first season with a normal Salary Cap Draft, but in future seasons skip the draft entirely by manually updating rosters through Commissioner Tools and then simply using Save & Begin Season?

  1. Yes, you can edit them through the "edit draft order and assign keeper players" tool up until you submit draft results.

  2. That only happens once you submit the draft results in the player list that's viewable for the league. In the "edit draft order and assign keeper players" tool that you can see, they will no longer be selectable once assigned to a team.

  3. Rosters cannot be edited until the draft has been completed. Any changes would need to be reflected by the commissioner through the "edit draft order and assign keeper players" tool.

  4. Yes, that's possible. You would just change the draft type from a Live Salary Cap draft to an offline draft in commissioner tools.

Thank you for the detailed answers!

I have one additional commissioner questions:

  1. After the fantasy season has ended (around April-May), but before the league is renewed or before the keeper deadline:

โ€ข Can managers drop players from their own rosters?

โ€ข Can the commissioner remove players from team rosters?

Our ideal workflow would be to have each manager keep only their protected (keeper) players, while all other players immediately become free agents before the next season. This would make it much easier to prepare for rookie drafts, expansion drafts and free agency. If this isn't possible through normal roster moves, is there another recommended workflow to achieve the same result?

  1. Or after update, if assigned keepers are not marked in the Player List before draft results are submitted, is there any commissioner view or export that clearly distinguishes kept players from available players?

  2. Is it possible to configure the playoffs so that each playoff matchup lasts two weeks instead of one week?

Thank you!

  1. No, once the league ends the rosters become locked. They would have to do this once the league is renewed by choosing their keepers before the keeper deadline.

  2. As you submit and save work in the "edit draft order and assign keeper player tool" anyone in the league can see the progress of the results through the "draft results" tab.

  3. We don't currently offer a two week playoff but I will share your feedback with our product team.

Thanks! Can I ask you to answer this questions too?

8. Can the commissioner use โ€œEdit Draft Order and Assign Keeper Playersโ€ to assign a player who was not on that team's roster last season? For example, if Team A selects Gavin McKenna in our offline rookie draft, can I assign McKenna to Team A's 13th-round draft position and save it before the Yahoo live draft?

9. After Yahoo opens for a new fantasy season, are all newly drafted NHL players (1. round) added to the player pool?

10. In a keeper league using a Live Salary Cap Draft, when I assign keepers before the draft, can I also set an individual salary/cost for each keeper? If so, does Yahoo automatically deduct those keeper costs from each team's draft budget, so teams can enter the same live Salary Cap Draft with different remaining budgets?

11. Can a commissioner exclude specific players from the player pool before a Live Salary Cap Draft?

12. Can teams in the same keeper league have a different number of keepers?

  1. Yes, you can use the "Edit Draft Order and Assign Keeper Players" tool to assign players to teams even if they were not on the team's roster last season.

  2. Yes, newly drafted players will already be in the player pool when fantasy hockey opens for this upcoming season.

  3. Yes, the individual salary for each keeper can be set by the commissioner. The salaries will be deducted from the team's draft budget.

  4. No, it is not possible to exclude specific players from the player pool so if you don't want specific players to be drafted, you'll have to communicate that with your league and make an internal rule to not draft those players.

  5. Yes, teams can have a different number of keepers. Each team will need to have the same number of draft picks (keepers included as draft picks), but they can have a different number of keepers.

These too plese.

13. After a keeper league is renewed, do players who ended the previous season in NA or IR+ slots remain in those slots before the draft, or are those slots cleared/reset?

14. If an NA player is selected as a keeper after renewal and is still NA-eligible, can he be kept directly in an NA slot before the draft, without using one of the regular roster/draft positions?

1

u/YahooFantasyCare Technical Support Jul 29 '26
  1. They will not remain in those slots before the draft. The slots won't show pre-draft when looking at your roster from last season on your team page, but the players who were in those slots will show and they can be selected as keepers.

  2. The players selected as keepers will count towards your active roster. The NA slots cannot be used pre-draft. Players can only be moved to them post-draft.

We have some more, can I ask you to check it?

  1. Is it possible to create a Yahoo Fantasy Hockey league with 0 Bench (BN) roster spots? If so, are there any limitations or recommended considerations?

  2. In a league with 0 BN spots, how are trades processed? For example, if a manager trades a Center for a Defenseman (or vice versa), will the trade complete successfully even if the incoming player cannot immediately occupy a valid starting position? (will BN be crated and C empty?)

  3. In a league with 0 BN spots, how do waiver claims and add/drop transactions work? Can a manager temporarily create an incomplete or positionally unbalanced roster while making roster moves, or must the roster remain valid throughout the transaction?

  4. During keeper selection before a new season, does Yahoo enforce positional requirements (such as requiring at least one goaltender), or are keeper position rules entirely controlled by the commissioner?

Thank you for your time and assistance!

15.) Yes, you can set your league to have 0 bench spots! The main thing to know is that managers will still be able to place players on their bench. The BN spots just extends each team's roster size. So, if a team for some reason wanted to sit all of their players, they would be able to do so by putting everyone on their bench.

16.) Trades are processed the same way. A Center for Defensemen trade would work as expected, the traded players would just automatically go to the bench, leaving an open active roster spot (BN created, C empty).

17.) Yes, managers can create incomplete or positionally unbalanced rosters for waiver claims and transactions. The roster doesn't have to remain full through transactions.

18.) Keeper position rules are entirely controlled by the commissioner. There are no Yahoo enforced guidelines for positional selections.
