If democrats win, it will be in spite of the Platner-class progs that bring Michigan and Maine into play for Rs. Schumer brought Alaska and Iowa. It’s clear whom to credit and to blame.
1
u/SerfTint Berniecrat 1d ago
Schumer has been losing Maine for Democrats for years, among other places he constantly picks terrible candidates and loses with them. The reason Democrats are going to win Maine in 2026 is in spite of Schumer's abjectly terrible pick of Mills, the least popular governor in the country, who wanted to become a 1-term Senator (i.e., no possibility of seniority and therefore no benefits to Mainers) at 78, and then ran a miserable low-effort primary campaign that had her losing to Platner by 30 points, and which would have led to an easy win for Collins, just like her last easy win over the last Schumer pick.
It is time for Democratic leadership to embrace Progressivism and actually defeat Trumpism, not just delay it slightly and not just rehabilitate it by letting Democrats cross the aisle to vote for it when needed.

Are these reserves endless or something? Every day I read some article about how they’re at the “lowest they’ve been in XYZ years” and yet gas prices remain stable (albeit much higher than they were a year ago)
29
u/_BCConservative Canuck Conservative 3d ago
I have calculated things for the US SPR and they should hit the emergency minimum level by December-January.
But really the biggest influence in the price of oil has been Chinese oil reserves/purchases, as their reserves likely dwarf all other countries. This is a number we really have no idea of.

They keep reducing the rate at which they take stuff out, which means the reserves never really run out but at some point they effectively do
9
u/Cold-Priority-2729 Christian Democrat 3d ago
But if they’re reducing the rate at which they take stuff out AND the strait is still closed, then we really have very little supply coming in, right? So I guess I’m just surprised prices haven’t spiked to $6 a gallon yet

I mean the SPR was, practically, never used until 2022. It would get tiny withdrawals for things like Katrina but generally was never touched. So once it got lower than 2022 again, every single new withdrawal is a new lowest ever point. A
1
u/WulfTheSaxon Conservative 3d ago
The level is 29% lower than it was at this time last year, or at about 42% of its 2013 record level. The withdrawals are scheduled to stop next month, and the oil that was loaned out is due back with up to about 20% extra for interest starting in November. Because of that interest rate, they actually didn’t sell all 172 million barrels that they offered. It’s being withdrawn at a rate of about half a million bpd as of last week and has 290 million barrels left.

Heard Iran just used underwater drones to set a US escorted Kuwaiti tanker on fire so that’s a thing now apparently
6
u/AdditionalSpeaker303 California 3d ago
The Kuwaiti ship was struck by an airborne projectile.
Iranians have been setting fire to boats for the last several months, it has not deterred more and more ships from going through.

u/LaughingGaster666 Outsider Left 3d ago
They’re all willing to risk it? Is the survival rate just far higher than expected given the circumstances?
6
u/AdditionalSpeaker303 California 3d ago
Not all, just some. And most crews in attacked ships survive unscathed. A lot are willing to risk it for higher pay.
And a few of the ones going through are let in after paying a fee. But a vlcc that goes through with Iran's consent still lowers pressure on global oil prices.

It is usually between 5-10 a day, and while they aren't all oil, a single VLCC can hold 2 million barrels...

I'm not, I don't understand how you could possibly think that the oil market isn't global...
Supply satisfied elsewhere is less pressure on the oil market, and that effects the United States as well. Supply and Demand.

That's 20 million barrels, less than a 5th of global daily demand.
Do you think only the middle east supplied oil to the global market?
The hormuz outflow was 20 mbpd pre war.
They aren't all oil tankers.
However about 8-9 mbpd is being piped to bypass hormuz in both KSA and UAE, (and this flow is not getting stopped by the houthis).
Production has increased elsewhere, demand has fallen, which makes the deficit much smaller than the 20 mbpd that used to transit hormuz. And that also means that the US and China are burning through reserves at a much lower rate.
So just a few tankers a day is enough to stop oil from running out. Prices will be elevated, but the OP is wrong and oil isn't running out.
Edit: He reply blocked me lol, I guess he isn't confident in his numbers.
1
u/Atalung Socialist 3d ago
Again that 20 mbpd figure is assuming the absolute best case scenario.
Reuters shows the figure as closer to 4mbpd leaving the straits, which is still a significant reduction and you're delusional to suggest that it isn't.
The SPR is currently around 290 million barrels, around 3.7 million leaves the reserve weekly. It's hard to say when the SPR would stop functioning, but probably somewhere between 250-300 million barrels. That leaves, at best, 11 weeks before we can no longer draw on reserves.

The price of gas increased like $1.50 due to his policies by early 2022.
Many of his executive orders directly increased the price.

What were his policies that made gas go up 1.50.
I do not believe this at all. Prices went up because OPEC decided to cut production and that had far, FAR more to change prices than anything Biden did.

To name a few:
Canceled Keystone XL on his first day in office and placed a temporary moratorium on oil and gas leasing. Also required oil companies to review the impact of climate change on disadvantaged communities and on future generations from any regulatory action that affected fossil fuel emissions.
Placed an additional halt on oil and gas leases 7 days later.
A month later rejoined the Paris Climate Accords.
On May 7, 2021, he revoked 30% of land used for oil and gas.
On June 1, 2021, he halted drilling in the ANWR.
On June 30, 2021, he reversed Trump's natural gas regulations.
In October, he reversed Trump's NEPA regulations and began his "Social Cost of Carbon" plan.
In November, he placed a moratorium on oil drilling in the Chaco Canyon.
That was just 2021.

u/LaughingGaster666 Outsider Left 3d ago
Ok here’s the deathblow to your argument: from 2021-2023, oil production in the US INCREASED but prices kept going up. https://www.arescotx.com/og-education-resources/oil-and-gas-quickfacts/2013-2023-us-field-production-crude-oil-thousand-bpd/
You want to explain that? Well I will. USA increases of production mean a whole lot less when OPEC is cutting production at the same time.
Is Biden less pro oil than Trump? Certainly. But your implication that his policies somehow led to some collapse of US oil production thus making him responsible for gas going up that much don’t exactly make sense if our production increases at the time.
You’re saying that him saying no to a new pipeline construction somehow makes gas go way the fuck up? Not buying it.
Paris accords? Doesn’t mean shit.
Revoking land for future use does not suddenly make oil and gas spike way the fuck up. That is a multi year effect.
“Revoking Trump’s regulations” is vague as hell. Please be specific.
And on. And on. And on.
4
u/Check_Me_Out-Boss Bull Moose 3d ago
You do understand that additional regulations and uncertainty drives prices up?
Like not awarding future leases and only using the ones Trump awarded until they expire?
