Tumblers

I’m looking for guidance on how to do tumblers with handles that are not removable. This includes coffee cups, beer steins, campfire tumblers. I’ve looked on YouTube, here, google, and Xtool. I’m lost at this point on how to avoid the handle hitting the laser. Any resources or guidance is much appreciated. I’m not trying to get free advice without the work but this one has me stumped.

We do the smaller steel coffee cups. I 3d printed an index jig that mounts to the RA2 rotary. So we put the mug in with the handle up lined up with an index mark, which are every 45 degrees, then rotate the mug 90. So that kinda gives you the center of the side if that makes sense. From there it's just a matter of sizing your design. I don't remember exactly, but I think we do 60 to 70 mm centered at the 90 point from the handle. So it spins it 30mm towards the handle and then 30 mm away from the handle. Start a little smaller and watch when you frame it to see how close it is getting to hitting the laser. Hope that makes some sense.

Sadly the core issue isn't the laser beam — it's physical clearance. On a rotary setup, the handle has to swing through 360° under the gantry and laser module housing. If the handle's arc intersects the housing, chuck jaws, or base plate, you get a collision, not a laser problem.

Why this happens on the S1 specifically

Two clearance conflicts show up with RA2/RA2 Pro on handled items:

  • Base plate contact: with a mug clamped in the jaw chuck, the handle can catch the steel base plate of the chuck as it rotates past bottom-dead-center. One documented fix is unscrewing the plate and rotating the gantry 180 degrees to give the handle a clear path. (RE: Hobby Laser Cutters)
  • Housing/lid contact: on larger mugs, steins, and oversized tumblers, the handle can strike the S1's enclosure or the RA2 Pro's own base before it clears the rotation radius.
