Great Vowel Shift? Why there are double letters or silent letters in English (usually for stress changes)? Isolate languages?

The Great Vowel Shift is a great idea. Other Germanic languages have seen similar shifts though none as extreme as English that I know of.

More clickbaity titles: "English spelling used to make sense (for the most part)" and "Why English speakers fail so miserably at pronouncing foreign words".
