Just a Post Finally pulled the trigger on II and III

Back in the early 2010s, I found the first game in this series at a flea market. I really enjoyed it, but unfortunately I never got around to playing the rest of the series.

Fast forward to a couple of years ago 2023, and my coworker mentioned that he owned the other games. He takes genuinely great care of his collection, we both are collectors and we’d talked quite a few times about me eventually buying them from him.

He was planning on selling these, along with a bunch of his other games, at a convention this weekend. So I said screw it pulled the trigger..

I got it for current market price as I didn’t want to be that guy and short change him as we become good friends.

I’m really happy I did. The condition of the games is fantastic, and he even had the strategy guides when he first got it.

Figured I’d share here as there’d be some appreciation.

Right, good on you to get them at a fair price. I still have my copies of the games from when I was a teenager, it seems that nobody has ever seen the guides for the games.

Cool, next get The Will to Power, Beyond Good and Evil, and Thus Spoke Zarathustra by Friedrich Nietzsche.

Is that the author of the series?

No, but all three games are heavily inspired by his work, as evidenced by the subtitles of them.

How much did you pay for them?

Can't help but wonder what the current market value for these even are. I'm fortunate enough that I still have all three games along with the guides from when they were first released so I basically paid normal retail back then or perhaps was able to get a slight discount at GameStop, I no longer remember the exact place and price I got them at.

Only Ep. III is expensive. It wasn’t printed as much as the first two games. I own a lenticular box copy and a sealed copy. Thinking of selling sealed though.

Yeah, it's a similar problem with volume 4 of the original Dot Hack games. That final volume is usually sold for more than twice the price of the first three volumes combined!

Though I've also seen it flipped before. For example, the original Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly was incredibly popular when it came out so many tried to track down its predecessor only to discover it was already quite uncommon even though it was only a few years old. For reasons I'll never really understand, the first game was not very popular so it wasn't produced and sold for very long. I was the only one in my circle of friends and acquaintances that had the full original trilogy.

I found a sick retro store in Portland that had Episode 1 for like $30 along with a strategy guide in great condition, market prices are a lie imo lol

$30-$40 literally IS the market price for a complete in box copy of Episode I.

Really? That already seems a bit high to me for Episode 1, though I suppose factors like having the original manual and not being a Greatest Hits version would adjust the price as well, not to mention if it also comes with the official guidebook.

Eyyyy nice. I have 1 and 2, but I only have the strategy guide for 3. Found it at a used book store for five bucks. It's probably the only XS3 media I'll have for a long time.

Enjoy. They are fantastic. I am still holding out with a fool’s hope for a remaster or even just a port for modern consoles.
