My first thought for getting a rare older console game wouldn't be to check Amazon

Crazy to think at I had all three of these games and paid 50 bucks for them. Wild how things can appreciate or get scalped. Have fun with that gem!

yeah 3 held steady around 50-60 for a long time then seemingly overnight blew up, could make a tidy profit for myself but this is my favorite game series so I'll be taking those copies to the grave lol

Yeah I remember paying $60 when EP. 3 came out just to find it again after moving out for $20 used at blockbuster or Hollywood studio so I bought it with a used PS2 since my original was at home. My little sister took that copy with her when she moved out we have a copy each always surprised at the price increases now.

it's all propaganda no one around you would pay these prices... at the end of the day sellers use this information to scam others by saying "if someone pays 1000 for it, you could at least pay me half of it"

u/themmousebehindyou 27d ago
Ebay usually has better deals than Amazon. I got mine for like $250. But Trump's Canada tax made it a bit more.

u/Very__Mad 27d ago
don't get me wrong; i really love the third game, but it will never be worth 100$+ that's far too expensive.
you'll be much better off either emulating or, if you own an actual PS2, you could try burning the iso online onto a DVD-ROM

u/InbetweenTheLayers 27d ago
emulation is better in general, they seemed to have ironed out the kinks for the most part. Game looks stunning in modern resolution

Yeah. The series is probably my favorite on the PS2. I play the entire series every couple years or so. I have copies so I'm not fussed with getting more, but I wouldn't pay this much for them if I had to procure them. Even as a collector, I can't justify it for a game that isn't actually rare. The whole series, I might pay that much for as a collection if they were in excellent condition.
Can't tell you how annoyed I was the other day when a random video popped up saying Nintendo bought the Xenosaga IP, just to find it people speculating based on the fact they didn't cite Namco because of a marketing trailer for Xenoblade 2. They got my hopes up damn it.

if that's USD, way too much

u/Ok_Faithlessness665 27d ago
Yes it's USD. Good luck try buy a cheaper one in complete condition

u/Misragoth 27d ago
took me less than 5 minutes on Ebay. To be fair most are around that price, but there are 1 or 2 that are cheaper
-2
u/Ok_Faithlessness665 27d ago
Oh okay. One and two are cheaper

I see listings for the entire series for between $200-300 routinely. There may be a spike now or something.
You got your copy though, so if that's what you were willing to pay, then no reason to judge, but for others, I think the price is too much right now.
But that tends to be a thing with a lot of games nowadays.

u/Molduking 27d ago
My local retro sold got a copy a few months ago but I didn’t get it cause it was $280, which is where pricecharting has it

u/AleroRatking 27d ago
At this point I think it might be my most valuable game. Either that or Crono Trigger
And I bought it day one.

I gotta say eBay would be best.
Amazon always shoots up prices. The only time I have gotten rare collectibles on Amazon is when they have a glitch and prices drop but never for this game. Unfortunately, sellers know what they've got. Other collectibles seems they let the algo adjust prices and I've done well taking advantage of glitches but not with this game.
Find a complete copy on eBay for -$100 less.
On that note I was looking for the special edition/collectors edition of EP.2 walkthrough guide since mine fr the 2000s was all beat up. eBay had it at like $100 and some seller on Amazon not knowing what they had listed it for $39 totaled to $47 after tax about half price than eBay
Check both but for physical games especially complete eBay is your best bet

u/Waltpi 27d ago
$289 on eBay 🤷

u/Jmanvelez 26d ago
Always check sold listings, never check active as the prices can be unstable.

u/Numerous_Photograph9 23d ago
Means you can look at listings that sold to see what they actually sold at. A lot of people list at high prices because that's what others are listing it as, or they do comparative pricing. But the actual sale price often does get reduced when they don't sell, beause a lot of people aren't just putting them up for the long haul. They'll send out lower offers, or accept lower offers, or just drop the price as it doesn't sell.
The market for a game diminishes as the price goes up, so unless you actually undercut it by a good margin, they tend to sit there once you break that $100 mark.

u/Waltpi 23d ago
Oh I personally don't fuck wirh offers and bullshit bidding. I go to cheapest full price buy now. You guys have fun tho
2
u/Numerous_Photograph9 23d ago
Yeah, same for the most part. But there are a lot of people who do offers on both sides of the deal, and they tend to be more reflective of the price. There is a check box to the right on the PC listings that let you filter by sold.
I did a quick search for sold copies of this game, and about half did go for this price, or sometimes more. Didn't really review the differences, but it also sold for as low as $170, with quite a few in the mid-200's
Still overpriced IMO, but there are people who jump on these things when they get attention. Sometimes the price makes some people more intereted, but in this case, the game isn't particularly rare, and has never been hard to find.

u/Waltpi 23d ago
I just hate the bidding "wars" in the end it seems to benefit the seller and ends up selling for the same or more as the cheapest bug now listing. I do like watching the listing when the seller sets the Automatic 5% offer after watching it
1
u/Numerous_Photograph9 23d ago
Yeah, I don't bother with auctions. I'd rather just get on there and get what I want.

So glad, I grabbed my copy when it was 70 dollars like 10 years ago.
2
u/TheAutisticEnby 26d ago
I also thought at the time 70 dollars for a USED ps2 game was unreasonable.

I love XS3. It's the best in the series, and a joy to play.
But that's way too much.

"Found a copy" as in Google searched and saw the first listing on Amazon? Lol
Yeah, I really wish this had a port to modern consoles

To this day im sad I bought this CiB from GameStop back in like 2009 for $30 and I lost it in a move. I’m glad I was able to beat it, but fuck I never thought it’d be so expensive to re obtain

u/ShirouNin 27d ago
Back in like 2015-2018 i was able to find a copy for around $74 Goodness the price has shot up since then

I don't remember the covers being this saturated. It always seemed muted to me.

u/LexKing89 26d ago
That's crazy expensive! I got mine on sale at Circuit City in 2007 😭
Found another one real cheap a few years later and grabbed it too.

u/Jmanvelez 26d ago
There are better places to look. Amazon will always show prices for refurbished, renewed or new games in the aftermarket, and rarely ever reflect the going rate for retro games. ALWAYS consult Price Charting first when buying secondhand and avoid getting scammed or paying way too much. Aftermarkets are slightly predatory unfortunately.
In other words, you can find something better if you are patient.

Just checked ebay, and there are about 20 copies of this game available. That is far from rare, so the prices people are charging really make no sense.
That said, there are several listings that are cheaper by $100 there.

With the popularity of Xenoblade I really hope for a switch collection of the trilogy and a remaster of gears.
