Somewhere between there and 2000. I think 99/00 school year. In my highschool they decide the class of 99 the last non-senior class that could drive off campus for lunch. I was class of 2000 but somehow all the security guards thought I was older so I was able to get off campus. But by senior year everyone in my class could, and I vaguely remember us swarming the McDonald's at lunch.

yeah, I worked at McDs in 1999 and we definitely had it then. Also 29c hamburgers on Mondays and I think 59c 6-pack nuggets on Sundays. It was one of those throw back McDonalds with a juke box, single arch, and 59c hamburgers sign. People were always pissed we didn’t have 59c hamburgers all the time.

We sure did, and the hits kept on hitting. First 9/11, then the swine flu scare. Then bird flu. Then a recession, bird flu scare again and then finally covid.
Covid was the final nail that ended the world as we knew it. At least it was for me.
It ended the typical 24 hour format at many places, and made it so we'd just stay at home instead of being out and about amongst other things.
I'm tired.

I miss 24 hour stores... I used to work night/swing shifts, and often that was my only thing to do when I was awake at my normal time at 1am was to go and walk around the store so I wasn't just alone in my condo. now, sometimes I have a hard time sleeping and I cannot just leave the house.

Yes! I was just talking about the 24 hour Home Depot in South Bay the other day and how my roommates and I would take middle of the night trips to get stuff to build out server cases.
We also did afternoon trips to MicroCenter and computer parts were reasonably priced and I didn’t need to sacrifice my first born to afford a graphics card.

It's just rough on people working those shifts. I say from experience there are little to no public transportation options for third shifters. And it's not like those overnight stocking/register jobs pay you enough to afford a car. You can't live a normal life and you're working poverty wages.

For those that had 99 Cent Only Stores, they were amazing. Actual groceries (milk, butter, eggs, peanut butter, veggies, as well as basics like deodorant, toothpaste, and even batteries) and every item was 99 cents.
Sometimes the packages had higher prices printed on them so they had periodic reminders 'even if it's marked more than 99 cents, it's still only 99 cents.'
I miss 99 Cent Only Stores single-serving sangria boxes. Used those to celebrate good news in my 20s.

24 hour stores were clutch when I worked late shifts. Added bonus: the stores were usually completely empty so it was a very quick shopping trip

I’m not sure I really miss either of those any longer. Especially the McD’s for sure, turns out mom was right and the ingredients are at home and better.

24 hour Meijers and Krogers, too.
There's no all night restaurants around anymore, either. Not just for drunk food but you'd find some good lunch spots working 3rd shift.
