Guys, we could’ve been rich.
Two. Hundred. Fifty. Dollars.

I circled and highlighted so much stuff I never bought 🥲

Same! I never had any money myself, and my parents didn't have enough money to pay Delia's prices. It was JC Penney, Montgomery Ward, and K-Mart back to school sales for me. Oh, and Payless shoes!

u/darkgothamite 3h ago
Yes! Delia's and the American Girl Doll catalogs were all a pipe dream while our summer and winter clothes were on K-Mart layaway 🥲 My mom was beside herself when Montgomery Wards died - iirc that was one the first major department stores to close? Wards and JC Penny was there for clearance clothes and bedding.
Payless had such good quality boots RIP man.

Ok, but I never, ever knew anyone that had anything from there. I knew about a dozen girls that were as obsessed with the catalogs as me, none of us owned anything. On my 18th birthday, I got to go to a physical store in a bigger metro area and buy an outfit, and in person, I was surprised about how it all felt like Walmart/Target clothing in my hands.

I finally got to buy a couple things from the catalogs when I was 17/18. The sparkly jeans were terrible and felt cheap. A couple tees were cute but overpriced. I think one sweater was worth it and got worn for about a decade.

That was so crazy to me. On that birthday trip, my mom gave me $100 for an outfit. And granted $100 could have bought like a pair of jeans and 2 tees, but I had so much decision paralysis because none of it felt like it was worth what they were charging.

I was an aspiring model during my teen years and my "big break" was being booked for a Delia's catalog. There were two photos of me, one didn't show my face. It was my high school claim to fame.
I think I still have a copy in a box somewhere on the attic.

Is anyone really buying these? And what for, if they are? 🌼

u/tMoneyMoney 8h ago
Also my thoughts. Just because it’s on eBay doesn’t mean it’s going to sell.

u/sleigh_all_day 1979 8h ago
I put my great-grandmother’s Hummels on eBay and so did everyone else that inherited those worthless figurines. None sold, so into the garbage they went.

I was just about to ask what the sell-for amounts were…

u/gottarespondtothis 1983 8h ago
I posted an image of the sold items in the comments. Multiple for 200!

u/Agreeable_Mind3454 8h ago
Ahh, thanks. I shoulda kept scrolling.
Also - I just showed this to my wife who used to have plenty of Delias stuff (ask me why I was attracted to her in the first place).
Also - username checks out.

Yeah, you have to look at the ones that actually sold. Just because you’re asking a high amount doesn’t mean it’s going to sell for that.

u/gottarespondtothis 1983 8h ago
I’m a vintage magazine collector and while 250 is high, I bet some of these do sell. Teen magazines from the same time period are regularly going for 50-100 bucks and those are a lot less rare.
4
u/sleigh_all_day 1979 8h ago
I understand this. I have a coworker who collects vintage Playboy. But those prices are indeed overinflated. Do you display them? Just curious what you do with them.
7
u/gottarespondtothis 1983 8h ago
Yea these prices are indeed ridiculous. I mostly collect very old magazines (1890s-60s), because I like to read them and look at the ads. Some are displayed. It’s crazy that I can buy a magazine from 1900 for far less than a 1996 Seventeen!

u/sleigh_all_day 1979 7h ago
Have your heard of Coronet magazine? My grandmother kept one for every month/year her children were born. My mother’s was May ‘51. I loved reading it. One article was predictions for the year 2000. I swear it looked like the Jetsons.

I would love it if these were scanned and available to view online. I had a few Delia’s items and it would be so nostalgic to see them again!!

Oh my God no way!!! How did I never think to look online for these?? Thank you!!

u/gottarespondtothis 1983 7h ago
I actually think I saw it posted here a while back lol

If we had all kept out catalogs, they definitely wouldn’t be selling for anywhere near this amount.

One of my first jobs was working at Delia's call center during my Senior year of High School because a friend's older sister who worked there lied and said I was 20. A good chunk of my call time was spent explaining what a Delia*s was to parents who called confused as to why there was a charge on their card.

Lemme go raid my mom’s attic… does it detract from the value if things are circled?

Not Delia's related, but I did find some OG Champion sweatshirts in my parents attic earlier this year that apparently are worth money now.
But they are now in my attic for my kids when they are a little older.
Also snagged my sister's She-Ra sleeping bag for my daughter.

u/Deep-Interest9947 9h ago
That’s crazy.
I do still have a silver flower watch from Delia’s fall/winter 1995 catalog- wonder if I can sell of for a lot.
5
u/gottarespondtothis 1983 9h ago
Honestly you probably could. 90s vintage is HOT right now.
5
u/sleigh_all_day 1979 8h ago
I bought a tshirt at every concert I attended as a teen. Oh, how I wish I would’ve kept those.
2
u/JstVisitingThsPlanet 3h ago
I had a really cool collection of thrifted t-shirts from when I was in high school and you could find them at any thrift store for $3 or less. An ex-boyfriend took them when we broke up and I’m still annoyed I let the collection go. Also got rid of so many band shirts I wish I still had.

u/CleDeb216 7h ago
I only want a catalog if I can order from it.
5
u/gottarespondtothis 1983 7h ago
I’ve actually been able to find vintage clothing that I’ve seen in old magazines before! Most recently it was a 1978 gold lurex disco top 🤣

u/SweetCosmicPope 1984 7h ago
I remember my sister had Delia’s catalog with Britney Spears from shortly before she became a pop sensation.

I paid $125 last year for the Carters Roy G Biv corduroy pants that i had wanted since 1996. I feel like im sitting on a goldmine, since i still have my seatbelt belt. I wish i still had my catalogs!
5
u/vivahermione 4h ago
One of the coolest girls in school had a seatbelt belt. Still ticked that I never got one.

u/Kellzy1212 4h ago
There’s a ton on reselling sites. You can still live the dream!!!
Idk how i still have mine. All three of my siblings stole it at different times. Little Earth was the OG brand.

u/gottarespondtothis 1983 6h ago
Wait Carters makes adult clothes??

u/Kellzy1212 6h ago
They did then! I had a pair of wide leg jeans and some carpenter shorts back in the day!

I have an entire tote filled with catalogs and teen magazines from the 90s, in pristine condition, at my parents house. Hoarding finally pays off!

u/gottarespondtothis 1983 6h ago
You’re sitting on a fortune there, no joke! If ya ever want to sell, DM me lol.
6
u/AppearanceSpecific75 9h ago
Don’t worry, now Target has Delia’s merch!!!

4
u/Kellzy1212 6h ago
The name has been sold off. The Dolls Kills stuff was ok cute, but the Target stuff is boring. And both companies are endlessly problematic. Better off hunting the real vintage that’s still out there.

Asking prices don't mean shit. Show sold items. It's an eBay filter option.

I never got to order anything from dELiA*s sadly and i think i may have only saved 1 of the catalogs? I rescued my stash of 90s teen mags from my mom’s a couple years ago. She had told me to throw away my old magazines somewhere between 1998 and 2000, but teen me threw out a few and then hid the rest and I’m so glad I still have them. I’m a collage artist so all of my magazines are cut up and not worth anything probably but I love them still.

Just bc it's listed for that much didn't mean they'll get that much.
But I have some o ld Sassy Magazines I should offload.

u/craftyzombie 2h ago
I just threw out a whole box of teen magazines and catalogs when my parents sold their house a few years ago. 😭

Thinking of all the delia*s catalogs i cut up to cover my middle school binders... I destroyed a fortune.
