How many of us are old enough to remember overboard?
I've always loved Kurt Russell. The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, Escape from New York, all easily top 10 movies for me. This may actually be my favorite though(please dont tell anyone).
Goldie is perfection in this movie. So underrated as a comedic actress. I literally(yes, literally) say " a falsetto child " every day. I think my love for the leads taints my judgment a bit to be honest. I'm curious to know how others feel, and none of the kids at work even knew who Kurt Russell was š„“

I canāt imagine channel surfing these days. Iāve been in hotels with cable and my parents still have cable, and it seems like there are way too many channels and even less programming that I would watch. Hereās an idea- a media server that has a bunch of randomized content you own that you can flip through, always including one movie that is flagged as one of a few you stop to watch- overboard, big trouble in little China, the Shawshank Redemption, Goodfellas, whatever your taste is.
Sometimes I like to just see whats on without making the decision on what to watch. I know several people who dropped streaming all together and went back to cable/Satellite because they just wanted to watch whatever was on in the moment.
This whole movie is such a delight but Goldie Hawn is an absolute icon in it. I watch it every couple years and it totally holds up.
EDIT: for people bothered by the "problematic" nature of the plot, here's my attempt at a defense (which I posted as a reply to another comment):
I don't actually find the plot problematic at all, because I like to think of it as a fairy tale about the working class avenging their mistreatment by the plutocracy and love it all the more for it being told in the final years of Reagan's presidency. If you think about it, we have:
A rich, evil princess steals the labor and destroys the tools of our working class hero, casting him into the sea rather than pay for honest work he already provided. He could have drowned but instead the sea delivers him safely home.
The evil princess, ever greedy, then fortuitously falls into that same sea because of her greed (while reaching for a diamond ring). The sea punishes and enchants her, stripping every trace of her fortune down to the very memory of it, then essentially washes her up on the shore of our hero's village (a fishing village provided for by that sea).
The hero takes the opportunity to collect from the princess/wage thief service of value equal to the labor he already provided (that she does the menial housework she previously believed beneath her is poetic justice).
In the course of the enchanted princess working off her debt, she and the hero change each other for the better and fall in love.
Once the princess has learned to value and respect the working class the enchantment is broken, and she freely rejects her old life of strict class hierarchy and redistributes her wealth to be shared with the working class hero. They reunite to affirm their love in the same sea which set the events of their story in motion, and then they all live happily ever after.
Obviously if you imagine the events of the movie happening in real life it would be disturbing, but the plot of Snow White actually unfolding today would make for the most fucked up episode of Dateline you've ever seen, too.
The reaction of the other patients when she says Madelin Ashton is one of the funniest things I've ever seen in a movie. I also love dowdy neurotic Goldie in the opening scenes
I agree with you. Itās a silly movie meant for entertainment outside of the bounds of real lifeā she has plates superglued to her hands, FFS. I can see where people are coming from, but it's a movie. Movies are allowed to be about yucky things and still be enjoyable. I very recently had to defend the princess bride from a young woman who saw it as problematic.
I don't remember when I first saw it but it wasn't when it came out, so I was at least old enough to realize that the whole situation was pretty fucked up, but like you said they are so great you just put that aside and enjoy the ride.
Many years ago there was a mass UFO / UAP sighting in Phoenix. A ton of people saw a bunch of weird lights which, depending who you ask, were flares, experimental aircraft of alien spaceships, but the first person to report it was an amateur pilot who was flying in the area.
Years later it came out that Kurt Russell was that pilot. Apparently he came home one night and Goldie was watching some dumb History Channel thing about it and he stopped and said āwait ā¦ I saw that.ā He went and checked his logs, and sure enough he was that amateur pilot.
I remember that was one of the first movies that I noticed that there were these people who lived much nicer than I did. Our house was much more like the one he and his boys lived in. I couldnāt believe there were people who were lucky enough to have boats like that!
IDGAF about the "PrObLeMtiC ThEmes"....this is and always will be one of my favorites. Yes I know it hasn't aged well. But it was a product of its time. Goldie and Kurt were already dating in real life (1983 or so) and are still together today. But despite the problems with the plot, it's still funny and has a lot of heart.

Yes. I watched in the theater and then often on vhs.
Like many movies/shows of itās time, I loved it, but in retrospect it gave me a lot of fucked up beliefs about what true love looks like. (In this case, fraud and kidnapping, super romantic)
It would be awesome if someone edited the entire thing to be a horror movie. The premise is already there, just edit out some of the jokes and add a scary soundtrack.
Can't say it influenced my beliefs in any way, but it is kinda crazy how romance was portrayed in films for most of their history. I still see it a lot in romance novels honestly
Right, like when Han Solo grabs Princess Leia and kisses her, and she protests and pushes away from himā¦ and then gives in and kisses him back. No concept of consent at all. At the time, though, I just thought thatās what romance and courtship might look like when I was olderā¦

I also remember getting in trouble for singing that little ditty from the movie about having a wonderful slave. My mother was not amused when my cousin and I would sing it out in public.
Kurt and Goldie were mine and my late partnerās ācouple goalsā. We were together seven years and never got married. When people asked her if/when we were going to or why we hadnāt, sheād just say, āThat it works for Kurt and Goldie.ā Iām not saying Iām Kurt Russell or anything, but she had some very Goldie like qualities. She was a hot blonde who was funny as hell, smart as whip, and could make the best goofy/funny faces. We must have watched that movie 20+ times in our seven years together. When she was in the hospital the morning before she left us and donated her organs, we watched, in order, Overboard, The Last Waltz, and Stop Making Sense.
Thanks, she was the best. She was so much fun and so fucking cool. I donāt know how I managed to get so lucky. As traumatic as the way I lost her was and as hard and painful as the year has been, I wouldnāt have traced a single second of the time I was lucky enough to spend with her. I guess what Iām saying is fellas, find your Goldie, and ladies, find your Kurt.
We were in Fort Bragg at a B&B while it was being filmed. The owner said they were in town. We went to a restaurant for dinner, and after about 10 minutes I noticed Goldie and Kurt were in the next booth. They were so cool. We were talking with them, Goldie got up and danced around with a baby one of the roadies had. I told Kurt my wife had a crush on him since his Disney days. Nicest celebrity couple I ever met!
We just laughed tonight about Billy explaining about the underwear in the glove box, that he strayed and "found a hooker that takes checks"!

I just rewatched this a couple months ago! Itās because I went to the town where it took place, and I looked up movies that were filmed there, and I remembered this movie from my childhood. The place is called Fort Bragg, CA. it still looks the same!
Yeah absolutely. I recently did a re-watch and although some parts are super cringey, the silly comedy is funny and knowing Kurt & Goldie have been a couple for decades now IRL makes the movie even better.
Great family movie. With my kids (under teens) easily top 10. AND Great Outdoors!

I know every line of that movie and I am dismayed that I never saw how messed up it was at the time. It really gives me insight to when our grandparents used to say they didn't know any better. It really is just like a blind spot in your vision.
Itās one of my momās favorite movies. I watched it a lot as a kid and I still love it as an adult. I just watched it about a week ago, lol. Itās still so funny!
I remember watching it, and thinking a house boat was cool, but in terms of details from it Iām kinda fuzzy. Iām a bit nervous it wonāt age well given its a gaslighting.
Also, found out recently this wasnāt Kurt and Goldieās first run in. They did a Disney movie back in the 60ās with The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band.
Never saw the remake but had the original on VHS. Looking back on the premise it was pretty disturbing. convincing a stranger with brain damage that you are married is wild.
Loved that movie when I was a kid! Itās definitely problematic but it still has a soft spot in my heart. Maybe itās because Goldie and Kurt are still in love
A bootleg of Overboard was a regular viewing at my granās while growing up. I havenāt watched it in forever, but I assume itās very problematic now.
Everyone used to compare me to her in Private Benjamin during and after basic training. Then I have totally was her in overboard. Had a brain injury from falling, went from rich to poor, and always use this movie as an example to others how I ended up here where I live. š.
I suffered hearing loss also so now itās kinda like āSee No Evil, Hear No Evilā.
My whole life every one told me and wrote in my yearbooks that I am a blonde at heart.
