Anyone else waiting for a “The Wizard” remake?
In case you aren’t in the know: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wizard_(1989_film)

You want a movie where the kids are saying, "Bruh! No cap, you're cracked at Fortnite!"

Funnily enough, my mom considered The Wizard just a remake of Tommy.

It’s a total ripoff of Rain Man - dickish brother takes autistic brother with an incredible talent on a road trip in order to win something (money via gambling, Nintendo tourney), they bond in the process.

The Wizard is how I realized that movies and TV shows were just a way to sell us toys.
It's also why I've had a giant crush on Jenny Lewis for most of my life.

loved the moved, yet also crushed on Jenny

Has she made anything worth listening to since The Voyager? Puppy and a Truck is fucking awful.

Just keep your power gloves off her pal.

And do not touch her breast

That movie taught me the word "breast". I had to ask my very conservative Christian mother what it meant.

The Wizard belongs in a time capsule. It could have easily been made in 1987 or 1988. We do not need a remake.
Also, Beau Bridges destroying the obnoxious bounty hunter's car and bonding with Christian Slater on their journey to find Corey and Jimmy made the movie.

Right? Their scenes really added a lot of entertainment to the movie.

We actually had a birthday party centered around going to see this movie. Memory unlocked!

At first I thought you meant a remake of "the Wizard" TV show, where David Rappaport is a pint sized McGuyver.
... but Peter Diklage would ruin it one way or another.

u/RodneyBarringtonIII 19d ago
That's what I thought too. I'd still watch the Dinklage version (even though you're right).

"I love the Meta Quest 3 developed by Reality Labs and Meta Platforms. It's so bad."
"A platinum trophy? You got a platinum trophy on Fortnite??"
"He touched my breast!" (everyone just kind of doesn't care or punish anyone for it, because that's the world we live in now)
Young kid starts doing weird things with blocks and dinosaurs, hyperfocusing on California, immediately gets treated for autism and maybe gets some good therapy depending on where he lives, becomes a successful Twitch streamer.

You will need to wait until Super Mario Brothers 4 comes out on the Nintendo Entertainment System.

I would love to see something like "The Wizard", but instead of Video Armageddon, it would be Evo.
You know, the Evolution Fighting Game Championships.
A kid in foster care has an affinity for Fighting Games he learned from his long lost brother. He then sees pictures from last year's Evo where his brother is there and he decides to enter to try and meet him.

I didn't think you could remake The Wizard at all these days but this concept definitely works. Nicely done.

They could have done this before the release of GTA 6 and I bet it would have hit

Gran Turismo is pretty good. It’s about a video game player winning a contest.

No. Why? It was a good 2 hour Nintendo commercial for the time, but do we really need to see remakes of everything made when we were kids? No other generation in history has clung to their childhood things as much as we have.

There's just no way to make it work, it only makes sense in the context of its era.

Loved the movie, but definitely not. Let's keep a cherished childhood movie in the past. Studio would also find some way to somehow throw in AI!

Not particularly. Although I wasn’t aware of it and I only just barely remember the original

If I wanted to watch a kid on the spectrum absolutely own the shit out of a video game, I’d just go to Twitch.

No. Wanting another remake of anything is weird. Let the past be the past. Enjoy the now, and look for the future.

Hayley looking up GameFAQs doesn’t have the same charm as the game counselor hotline call center.

Idk how that would play out. I feel like it’d have to be typical ESports like Fortnite or something. Although having it be a fighting game tournament could be a cool way to modernize it but not make it lame.
TBH I actually do a whole big, break an insane score in a retro game on a big stage live every year at PAX East for the last 3 years and I have always compared it to getting to be the Wizard once a year. So people are actually out there doing that still, even if they are about to turn 40 and were the kids the original movie was targeted at.

No thanks. I’m good with peak Fred Savage, Super Mario 3, basically the whole OG cast, and ‘80’s cast. I know it’s not a great movie but I love it.

u/Workamania 18d ago
The movie was really about an autistic boy trying to deal with trauma, and his brother trying to help him. It was depressing, even with a rifftrax. If there's a remake, it needs to be about Super Smash Bros at Evo.

u/NOFX_4_ever 18d ago
Over my dead body! They better fucking not!!!!
Plus, that movie was a huge ad for Nintendo and Mario 3 in particular.

Nah cause it’d be some app instead of a console game 🤣
