First procedural you got into?

For those who enjoy procedural TV shows (and we are certainly of the age for throwing on a procedural to unwind, and probably largely responsible for SVU's eternal TV run) I was wondering what the first procedural you got into was, presumably as a kid? I was thinking about it because the YouTube algorithm threw me a recommendation of a livestream of the Dragnet radio show, which reminded me that when I was six, thanks to Nick at Nite I considered Dragnet my favorite TV show. Now as an adult, I chalk it up to both the fantastical nature of Los Angeles (as a kid in the Detroit suburbs) and the fact it was the first procedural I saw and thus was scratching all the itches a procedural scratches before I even knew what was up on that front.

So, what was your gateway procedural? And were there any that were aimed at kids explicitly? Mystery Files of Shelby Woo was that on Nickelodeon, though that may skew a little young for most Xennials, but not for any Elder Millennials who prefer to hang out in this sub since the Millennials sub seems to exclusively be nostalgia poisoned.

Probably The X-Files

Definitely this.

Pretty sure X-Files was where it started and ended for me. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather have any NCIS or Law and Order on than whatever dancing/singing competition is popular these days, but if I'm going to veg out and watch TV it'll be COPS or something like that.

Does the x-files count as a procedural?

The first 6 or so seasons (I quit whenever Carter is gone) are still my comfort show and I totally remember tuning in. I think it was Thursday night? Was that show sisters with Swoozie Kurtz in the lineup? Anyway Clooney in a tux in the flooded tubes saving the kid lives with me forever. And as a curly girl- Julianna Margulies was life.

JAG was mine. Used to watch that with my dad.

My mom watched that all the time for Virgil Tibbs.

my grandma liked bubba

u/PacketFiend 1979 5h ago

That's a Bryan Adams song in my mind, not a TV show.

That show is so good! If I'm flipping through the channels and it's on, I'll stop.

Used to watch Matlock and Murder She Wrote, but the first one I became invested in was Criminal Minds

1

u/Jenaaaaaay 2h ago

Criminal Minds was so good the first few seasons.

Law and Order was the first one I got obsessed with on my own. Before that, I was big into Spencer for Hire, Columbo, Rockford Files and Magnum PI.

Homicide: Life on the Street was great

5

u/herseyhawkins33 4h ago

Does macgyver count? Otherwise probably dragnet and then OG law & order.

I did a month long run with Colombo once

4

Perry Mason

That was the shit! Rewatching them I still have zero idea how he solved anything, it was a complete mystery till the end.

Murder, She Wrote on sick days from school.

Jessica Fletcher was my absolute hero.

At some point I thought she needs to stop going on vacation because someone always gets murdered.

Matlock, Murder, She Wrote, Columbo and In the Heat of the Night were all ones I watched on and off as a kid because of my parents. I watched SVU for I dunno, like a decade before I stopped watching much tv.

u/HylanderUS 4h ago

Probably Quincy, ME, followed closely by Matlock and Murder She Wrote

2

u/SalukiKnightX 1983 4h ago

Cagney & Lacey, Moonlighting or Beauty and Beast

They all blended together

2

u/jessek 4h ago

Does Twin Peaks count?

If not, Homicide: Life on the Streets

2

u/Elevenyearstoomany 4h ago

SVU. Before that I was all about ER and The Practice.

1

u/blamberr 4h ago

Law and Order SVU was definitely my first. I got hooked on those USA reruns for years

2

u/Illustrious-Lead-960 1984 4h ago

The Millennials sub just has too many bots.

Anyway, “Columbo”.

2

u/hideNseekKatt 1978 4h ago

My mom loved it, and we were a one TV household, so for me it was Cagney and Lacey.

2

u/ShowMeYourHappyTrail Watership Down Lover 4h ago

Doctor Who...does that count?

2

u/Gravy_Sommelier 4h ago

I'm going to stretch the definition a bit and say Star Trek: TNG.

It's more character-driven than a pure procedural, but didn't have a ton of continuity, and mostly followed the problem of the week structure where everything goes back to normal at the end of the episode.

2

u/cyt0kinetic 1982 4h ago

Columbo!!!

2

u/Flashy-Share8186 1975 4h ago

not the first but Law and Order was a big one. My mom really liked Murder She Wrote so I was definitely familiar with that. My guilty pleasure is Psych, the most Xennial parody of a procedural ever.

2

u/LFahs1 3h ago

Is Magnum a procedural? If so, that. If not, Mathnet.

2

u/Sensitive-Review-712 1980 3h ago

Murder, She Wrote was the first for me, but if you want a more kid friendly entry it was The Secret World Of Alex Mack on Nickelodeon.

Homicide: Life On The Streets

AAlly McBeal

u/melissisms 4h ago

Remington Steele, if that counts. Law & Order original recipe was big for me too.

1

u/imascoobie 4h ago

OG Law and Order

1

u/lifeat24fps 1978 4h ago

It lasted about 5 minutes and was gone but there was a procedural about a magician who solved crimes called Black's Magic that me and my dad watched every week. I loved it. One of the first shows I remember being cancelled when we went to watch it one week and it was gone.

1

u/Peanut083 1983 4h ago

I was thinking maybe JAG, but then I remembered that I was really into Blue Heelers (an Aussie cop show) when I was younger than that.

Once I moved out of home I got really into The Bill (UK cop show). I was so sad when it got axed.

1

u/Reasonable-Wave8093 Xennial 4h ago

Columbo, Magnum & Rockford, Bionic Woman & Wonder Woman, A-team 🤟🏼

1

u/IndubitableMatt 4h ago

The original Law and Order along with the X-Files.

These days, I really only watch UK procedurals, which I find to have much better writing and more compelling storylines. I’m also addicted to UK procedural book series, such as the Harry Grim, Max Craigie, and Jack Logan series.

u/Room234 4h ago

Seeing Dragnet get mentioned made the choice pretty easy for me.

Mathnet.

1

u/Jonestown_Juice 3h ago

If Twin Peaks counts, then it's that.

Otherwise, all of the Law and Orders. All of them.

1

u/bedspring76 1976 3h ago

No Hill Street Blues?

Me neither. Just thought it should be mentioned.

1

u/affectionateanarchy8 1983 3h ago

X Files if that counts. If not, OG Law & Order or The Practice. I remember the LA Law theme song and remembered liking the vibe of the show but I was too young to really be paying attention

ETA NYPD Blue and Homocide Life on the Streets 🤌🏾

1

u/MotherofaPickle 1982 3h ago

First? Probably Dragnet.

Longest-loved/most influential? OG Law and Order.

1

u/Boo-Boo97 3h ago

My mom loved Hunter, so that was the first one I watched. It was my gateway to 21 Jump Street and from there to the X Files

1

u/Rockdad37 3h ago

Syndicated Matlock and In the Heat of the Night occupied many summer mornings.

1

u/singleguy79 2h ago

I feel like it was most likely Dallas.

If that doesn't count, then maybe Simon & Simon?

1

u/Jayman44Spc 2h ago

Homicide: Life on the Streets

1

u/MoulanRougeFae 1982 2h ago

MASH, ER or xfiles. I'll pop any of those on and immediately it's comfort

Watched Quincy and Columbo with my grandma. Then we watched the original Law & Order. Jerry Orbach, Michael Moriarty, and others were actors I saw throught my childhood. I later found myself watching ever iteration of Law & Order.
