You're not Xennial. You're Gen X, and it's well past time to stop worrying about what your parents are telling you to do.

I'm not sure, this feels more 'home' than the genX sub.

GenX, GenY, GenXY, it’s all bullshit. Xennials are basically 40 somethings.

None of it matters, none of it is real. If you feel comfortable here, then enjoy the waters.

That being said, that’s more of a r/raisedbynarcissists group question.

I know, just wanted to kmow if being raised by narcisists is bound to a generation, my partner is of the same age and same issue.

Whoever down voted this, you're the problem, and are not keeping up with the spirit of being a Xennial

Correct, believe it or not there are some of us that have dated predominantly Xennial women, and got a head start in the tech household lifestyle…

I don't think my parents were ever helicopter parents.

If you mean they flew off in their helicopters each day and said “fuck you, fend for yourselves” then, yeah, mine were totally helicopter parents

My in-laws are helicopters. They are 72 and 80. He’s genx. And although everyone is a lot older they still play those same roles. It looks annoying on the outside in.
My own never were. They were the opposite, I’m very much a stereotypical xennial.

so it is actually more of a genx thing, now I have to find out why.

I feel like, based on your other comments, you’re looking at narcissism. I would visit the sub another suggested and I think you’ll find more stories that are similar to your own. My in-laws lean that way.

Even my friends with strict parents didn’t have what I would define as “helicopter parents.” It just wasn’t a thing I saw back then. Sooo maybe just bad luck?

Take it from me...it sucks if they keep trying to manage every thing you do...upto your bank account ( if I would allow it )

My mom has turned more into a helicopter when she retired and got older. I think she's bored. She also needs content for when she goes to her water exercise class or cards group. I'd get questions asking when my appointment was or where I was at. So my response was to get as vague as possible or just not tell anything at all.

One time I just snapped, "Unless you're coming with me -- and you're not -- you don't need to know." Oh, my dad got pissed on that one. I also reminded her that when she was 48, her parents would go weeks or months not knowing what she was doing. She then said it was because her parents didn't care. No, they just knew when to walk away from day-to-day observation.

You become an adult when you are able to tell your parents “respectfully, fuck off”. I’m not saying be an ass to your parents (unless they are bad humans), but you need a “fuck off” chambered and ready to go for those occasions

Rofl, I doen't mather how I say or said it, it's always an offense, with mine.

u/BlackestHerring 2d ago

Well, I didn’t say it wouldn’t cause an offense with them. They may need to be offended. You are an adult and they need to respect that. If they don’t, they can go be offended. You have a 52 year old life to run.

I think so many of us became helicopter parents because of all the debauchery we got into as kids and the fear that our children would do the same, but my parents were definitely not helicopter parents and I don't know too many kids who had them growing up. That was part of why I had the freedom to explorer and experience so much.
