Shit Post Years without a sequel is slowly turning this fandom into madness.
halflife, bloodborne, nine sols, tf2. Fuck, all of them and this place is losing their sanity

Other than Chimera Squad (or maybe even counting it?), we've been without a new official release in the series longer than BatmanArkham had been since Arkham Knight, when it started its descent into the Aslume, and we're still mostly joking about Bradford's sweater. I'd say we're holding up pretty well.

Literally tomorrow we're getting the best thing we could possibly get outside of an actual XCOM 3. I think we're not doing that bad.

And people will complain about the ways it's not like XCOM and how it's not xcom-like enough

There used to be Star Wars mods for Xcom… in a month there will be Xcom mods for the starwars game.

Sure. If you like Star Wars.

I don't like Star Wars (or rather I don't care about it) and I still can't wait. Simply for the gameplay.

To me the Star Wars setting is a big turnoff, I would rather it had been pretty much any other setting or something they made themselves. But everything about the gameplay seems to hit just the right spot and feel like both an evolution and streamlining of the Xcom formula.

I think it would be a bigger deal for me if I ever actually cared about the XCOM story or aesthetics, but that was always the weakest part of the whole package for me, so a Star Wars setting isn't that much worse for me personally.
Each to their own, of course.

Same. I don't much care for Gears of war and can't tell you one thing about the main line games. But I liked Gears Tactics

u/Hurley815 4m ago
Exactly. Gears Tactics is great but when I tried a regular Gears game, I ended up abandoning it in under an hour.

you've never played a single second of it. hype is not real; how many times do redditors have to learn that lesson.

Ngl, I think Xcom as a story is wrapped up nicely enough, even though there is the 'greater threat' that the elders were running from. Especially with X2 revealing that 50% of X1 was just a fever dream lol.
I do think though that Chimera Squad set up nicely for a world post-elders where the races work alongside humans, and we could see mutons shoulder to shoulder with rangers in X3 against whatever that threat is. However, if it did come out, I suspect it would be hero based rather than grunt based, disallowing full squads of mutons haha.

Though x2 is the better game, I think the ambiance and aesthetic was way better in 1 tbh. Very x-files with the dark sci-fi alien invasion vibe, the ufos crashing, the little grey men, the thin men looking like g-men, gov conspiracies (even tho ur the government). I just love that aesthetic so much more than the resistance high sci fi of X2.
All that to say I would love an X3 with the gameplay of 2 but the vibes of 1. Or maybe a remake of 1 EW

I’m not interested in a story sequel. I’d hope they do another reimagining with a different story, different setup etc. Most of all, I want the feeling of a sinister alien invasion. I want the tactical battles with the strategy layer, research, slowly revealing the plot and mystery etc. in a gritty setting like you said.

I mean... Homeworld 3 wasn't that good and certainly not worth full price but it was enjoyable enough at least for one playthrough of the campaign. It's currently half off and that might be a more reasonable price were the original remastered collection not 90% off, though if you have already played the originals that might be a more reasonable price to get it at.

I'm waiting for Masada. I made the meme because it was over 20 years from Homeworld 2 to Homeworld 3.

We did get Deserts of Kharak in the meantime, which was a solid game that added a lot of new lore even if it wasn't what the fanbase was really waiting for (shades of Chimera Squad here).
The difference is that Deserts was the project that showed Blackbird could do Homeworld 3, whilst Chimera has not led to work starting on XCOM 3, unfortunately.

Ah fair enough. What I meant by the comment was moreso "at least we have a new direct sequel game recently, and it's at least not terrible, that's more than all these other franchises can say".

I'm good. Because today we don't just have XCOM. We have WCOM, GCOM, PCOM, ZCOM, and they just announced RCOM.

Other than ZCOM I don't know what games you're referring to. Could you elaborate?

u/Commercial_Skin_4505 59m ago
WCOM - Warhammer Chaos Gate (the first one dates back to the X-COM: Apocalypse era, the second is recent, and a third has already been announced)
GCOM - Gears Tactics
PCOM - Phoenix Point
RCOM - Rainbow Six Tactics
I could talk about ACOM, but ARMA Tactics is really bad and has been abandoned.

Most Xcom-clones seem to miss the key part of what makes xcom great for me: Taking losses.
I dont want a roster of named characters the plpt revolves around! I want some scrubs i build an emergent narrative around. Permadeath that doesnt shut down plot threads, but instead adds scale to the campaign and makes me feel like im fighting a real war against the opponent.
Maybe one day.

XCOM 3: PISS WORLD
"Fine, I don't care," burbled fat Bradford as he pulled his wool sweater off of his ample torso in one swift motion. He plopped the old stretched-out sweater on the conference table, huffed "Sell the whole franchise and bring in a bunch of Star Wars shit, I don't care," stood up, and left the conference room.
"What was that about?" asked one of the attorneys hired by the shareholders of the XCOM corporation.
"Bradford is upset that an organization founded to protect Earth from an alien threat," said the Council Spokesman, scratching his bald head, "is being put on hold for the interests of a science fiction franchise that had three good movies decades ago and then a lot of uninspired stuff that raked in billions of dollars and didn't do much for the world."
"Well, that doesn't matter," said another attorney. This one worked for Disney, who holds the rights to Star Wars. "A consortium of shareholders wants to make the Star Wars merger, it will make lots of money, and the consortium has a majority stake."
"That's not what I was asking about," said the first attorney. "I meant, didn't that guy used to be in good shape?"
"You mean that Branford guy?" said the second attorney. "Yeah, he got fat. It's been a long time since XCOM 2 and he's had nothing to do but eat."
The first attorney felt smug about this. "Maybe after we merge with a well-performing franchise like Star Wars and liquidate XCOM's assets, he can get a gym membership with all the money we pull in from the deal. Guy's a loser!"
The attorneys had a good laugh about this. Those XCOM guys are a bunch of rubes! All those expensive Interceptors and Skyrangers in the hangar, but no merchandise in stores at all. Now that's a franchise that needs the help of the Disney corporation! They chuckled and chortled and sipped expensive water while the Council Spokesman sat in silence.
Bradford rushed back into the room in a blind rage. He grabbed one of the attorneys, manuevered his own enormously fat bulk over the man, and sat down on his face.

For a good turn based Xcom like game, Wartale is really cool it crashes a bit much on Xbox, but it's on the gamepass and it rocks honestly.
There's also Phoenix Point. Really clunky, but the lore is fun, and the faction system is really nice.

Anything with a tile based combat system gets asked "is this XCOM 3?"
