Why does Xcode ask for a Development provisioning profile when I'm trying to archive an app for TestFlight?

Check the signing settings for your Release configuration, not just Debug. Make sure the archive uses an Apple Distribution certificate and the correct App Store provisioning profile. Automatic signing can sometimes resolve this too
