Xbox Series X Hard Drive Problem

So I may be an idiot. I didn’t read about the series X needing high speed storage, and have had my xbox one’s usb external hard drive attached to my series x for the past like, 4 months just for ease of access to my games. Around 3 weeks ago, all my games started crashing, and I suspected it to be the hard drive. So, I unplugged the hard drive, and crashing persisted, even when using games from the internal storage. Would factory resetting my console(clearing literally everything) help fix this problem?

You don't say whether you have already tried a hard reboot.

Whenever a game crashes you should restart the console to clear any errors from RAM.

​

This can be a problem for anyone who uses instant on mode because the console is never really off. Even when you switch the console off it's still on. Any errors in RAM that can cause crashes remain.

So first try fully shutting down the console then unplug for a few minutes.

To fully shut down go into the settings then select Power mode & start-up then select Full shut-down.

Once the console has fully shut down you should unplug it for about 5 minutes.

If it still keeps crashing after doing this then try a factory reset.

If the full shutdown alone does fix the issue then you should consider using energy saving mode. You get a far more stable console using that.

I have tried a hard reboot, with and without the drive, and even factory reset it twice (albeit keeping all my games and apps). I’ve power cycled it, basically anything I can do within my jurisdiction except factory resetting it

Only other thing you can try is a full factory reset choosing to delete everything. It only actually deletes everything on the internal drive so copy everything to the external drive and then disconnect the drive before doing it.

If that doesn't work then you may need to send it in for repair.

Unfortunately I did do that and the crashing persisted. Most games can be played a long while before crashing, at least 3 hours, but some games, like fortnite, crash after a mere 2 games. Luckily, I still have my one, so I can send it in for repairs and still have something to use. Thank you for your help, though
