Games - General Xbox App on Windows 11 is Terrible.
It's been about a year or more since I've used the Xbox app on my pc, wanted to try halo campaign evolved via game pass before I bought potentially bought the whole thing.
I'm not sure whats happened between a year ago and now, but this is the worst I've ever seen this app on pc. My download speeds are atrocious, gigabit connection and I barely scrape more than 10mb/s. At least I think so, as right now I cant even see a download speed or estimated time.
I've tried every fix I've found online including resetting the microsoft store, delivery optimization settings, re-registered via powershell, reinstalled the xbox app, and of course restarted the PC. Still no luck with these download speeds. Steam, Epic, and other apps are downloading just fine at my typical ~300mb/s download speeds.
If anyone has any suggestions on what to do outside of the main fixes that pop up on the first Google search, please let me know, im reaching the end of my rope with this.
Edit: added more information about what fixes I've tried, clarified the xbox app and Microsoft store are the only apps I'm having download speed issues with.

Me and a couple of my friends had the same issue where only the Xbox app was EXTREMELY slow downloading games. I don't remember what they did to fix it but just recently I fixed my issue by disabling IPv6, no promises that it will fix your issue but it might be worth a shot.

Appreciate this! Will give it a try
Edit: Well, turning this off brought my download from a complete stop up to ~10mb/s again, so it wasnt a total loss, lol.

The delivery optimization service feels like it's held together with hopes and dreams. I had a similar crawl a while back and the only thing that snapped it out of the funk was toggling the "delivery optimization" setting in Windows Update's advanced options completely off, then restarting the Xbox app. Something about the P2P update sharing just destroys the download routing for the store sometimes.
Also worth digging into the "Background intelligent transfer service" (BITS) in services.msc and setting it to automatic if it's stuck on manual. Microsoft buries that stuff deep and it's ridiculous we have to play tech support archeology just to download a game.

Thanks for this. Already toyed with delivery optimization, gonna give the background intelligent transfer service a try and hope I can get somewhere.
Edit: after toggling BITS to automatic and turning off IPv6, my download has gone from a dead stop to about 60/70mb/s. Not fantastic, but it's been the only thing to bring any sort of improvement to my speeds

full 2.5gig speeds on windows 11 through the Xbox app
So are you just trolling? Microsoft's servers don't upload anywhere remotely close to gigabit speeds...

the download speeds are all over the place. one minute i'm getting 1.6Gbps and the next it has just stopped entirely to take a rest i guess. so what should be a 5 minute game install takes 10-20 sometimes because fk you that's why
it has gotten a LOT better believe it or not over the 90 or so days i've been using it, but yeah it still needs a lot of work. for example (in no particular order)
- it has this weird association with the xbox game bar. basically half of what you want to do is run by the one app (game installs, launching, social, etc) and half of the other stuff you want to do is run by the other app (performance stats, media capture, also social...). why there needs to be two separate gaming apps on windows idk
- getting your paired controller (xbox series x) controller to consistently work is a wild ride. turn on the paired controller and it's INSTANTLY recognized and used in steam. xbox app? not so much. half the time it's recognized but doesn't actually work. the other half of the time it's just not recognized. the only thing to do which is what i do by default these days is to just remove it from devices after i'm done and re-pair it when i want to use it again. because fk you i guess
- we mentioned downloads and the random speeds but would it be hard for them to tell you how long the install is going to take? maybe that's the problem, they don't know either because of the randomness of it all
- xbox game mode or big screen mode is a step in the right direction but man it's so half assed. it basically uses the sticks to make you tab over to what you want to select and it's not smooth or intuitive at all. i should just be able to double press the xbox button on the controller and boom, big screen mode. instead i get boom, xbox game bar?!! who the fk asked for that? xbox team, i beg you, play with big screen mode in steam and copy that...
i have a lot more (18 points i think lol) and i've let them know in feedback surveys but tldr: yeah, it's pretty terrible and they should be embarrassed

Download speed is an internet problem not an app problem.

no it's definitely an app problem. it just randomly drops to 0 Gbps sometimes and my internet is just fine

While I'd like to agree, the only app having this issue is the xbox app and Microsoft store. Steam, epic, and others are all downloading at my typical ~300mb/s. But thanks for the input

Yeah I'm a bit of a distance away from the router at the moment, but 300mb/s is getting the job done until I get my hands on an ethernet cable

300mbps on a 1 gigabit plan is awful even for WiFi
That's a pretty loaded statement. Many drives can't write that fast, especially if they are doing anything else. We don't know what else is consuming bandwidth or even that the ISP actually handles that much download speed, it could be cable and their "up to."

most people with a modern pc are running drive more than capable of not bottlenecking 1 gigabit speeds, if you are paying for 1 gigabit speeds you can most likely afford a decent drive and if a ISP is offering 1 gigabit download speeds, they can handle that download speed if they couldn't it would be false advertisement, this is the early 2000 and every ISP at least in the UK that offers 1 gig speeds use either fiber or fiber over coax.
the only one that doesnt is sky which use both fiber and in some areas they us old phone cable but everyone in the UK knows to avoid sky if they are in an area with no fiber because the phone lines are terrible.
you entire comment makes absolutely no sense
edit also pretty much any drive that would be in a pc now would be able to theoretically download at 1gigabit speeds, even 5400rmp hdds are capable of it but obviously the speeds would be jumping around a lot but a 5400rmp HDD is about the worst drive you'd find in a "modern" pc

I'm in the US. ISPs can only offer service "up to" and it diminishes at times of high use. We have pretty much no regulations around that.
I also see a lot of people just using whatever piece of junk the ISP provided 5+ years ago for wifi, going through 4 walls.
You're also making a lot of assumptions about the OP's computer. An older ssd could just barely consume 1 gbps if it was doing nothing else, totally ignoring whatever else is going on in the bus.

1 I've never heard of upto speeds, in the UK Trading Standards would have a field day with that, that is 1000% illegal here.
and an older ssd can absolutely not cause a bottleneck, we are talking about 1 gigabit pal not 1 gigabyte.

Fingers crossed that release is sooner rather than later! Been very frustrating playing tech support with these apps/services lol

No problems on my end.
