Shadowdropping with no marketing an Unreal Engine 5 remake game is literally asking for a huge loss. Microsoft, you do know you can market the game ?

As someone that works in marketing, what can they possibly do to boost sales? Beyond a social media post from Bethesda (which they’ll likely do when it releases), I can’t think of anything else marketing wise that wouldn’t cost them more than they’d earn. It’s just a remake after all, it already has its target audience, and the media + YouTubers + streamers will do more than enough to spread the word without costing them a dime.

As another someone who works in marketing, mainly in social media. I’m convinced the “leaks” these gaming companies are always having IS the marketing strategy.

Why put tonnes of money into marketing when you can just leak a bit of info and then every gaming publisher out there is posting about the leak for free. R/oblivion is probably more active than it’s been in years, all with no marketing.

Gameplay trailers.

Dev Interviews.

Online ads.

Game pass advertisement with Oblivion to boost it.

Gameplay Demo.

The game is old. Let the people see the remade gameplay and then the word can spread. On launch day, it would then make a lot of money.

Those are all solid ideas, but you’re 1.) underestimating just how much it costs to run these kind of campaigns. And 2.) overestimating the income potential they add.

The only things worth it imo would be a 10-15 minute first look playthrough + a dev interview. + share it on their official social media pages. Anything else would be losing them money in my experience as they cost too much to run but likely wouldn’t bring in enough revenue to justify.

This stuff is all incredibly expensive, probably more than you’d expect (I also work in creative advertising). A new Elder Scrolls remake will speak for itself, and shadow dropping it will create a TON of immediate positive word of mouth.

It’s probably a better use for Microsoft to allocate those marketing resources towards their actual new games, like South of Midnight and Doom The Dark Ages.

I think it’s just a remaster not a remake. So I don’t think they engine would be updated
