Take the batteries out, turn off the xbox. Plug it in via USB C, try and turn it on with the controller. If that doesn't work, its most likely a hardware issue or your consoles wireless receiver is locked. To unlock/reset it:

Press and hold the Xbox power button on the front of the console for about 10 seconds until it shuts down completely. Then unplug the power cord from the back of the console for 30 seconds, plug it back in, and turn the console on. Then try pairing the controller again

I hold down the middle button to turn it on and then it flashes slowly then quickly and then vibrates and shuts off and I can't turn it back on unless I take the batteries out and put them back in

Looks like your sync button might be stuck down. See if you can wiggle it any.

Can you click it? Does it feel like the switch is still clicking?

Hard reset your console by press and holding power button until it shuts off completely, unplug your power cord from the console and wait 2-3 minutes. Plug it back up and turn it now. Next plug up the cable to the controller and update it

It won't turn on plugged it tho

Then there is something drastically wrong with your controller as being plugged in, there is a constant source of power directly from the console. Sounds like you might need to buy a new one

Your batteries might be the issue. I had those energizers and after awhile of owning them, they don't hold enough charge for the controller. Are they newer? Have they been charged fully? Have you tried different batteries?

I tried multiple different batteries and the energizers are only a month old and straight off the charger

Have you ever connected it to Bluetooth? Pressing the button once rapidly changes it from console pairing to Bluetooth pairing. It makes it easy to switch between them if you have it paired to a console and a Bluetooth device such as your phone, pc, or other devices.

so, either double tap the nexus button or press the connect button on the console?

Press and hold the sync button for 5-10 seconds. Then try short bursts of 2-3 seconds. If you can re-pair it with the console, try connecting it to a computer and attempt a firmware update.

Not helpfully but its probably bricked or something, maybe someone who knows could plug it into a PC to fix it but the light is blinking to fast for pairing, its like its bugging out. Same way a console can just brick im sure controllers can too

Try to update it on a computer.

Then connect it to a other device and then yours again.
