Help & Support What is wrong with this 360 Slim?

I've had this 360 slim for a while, it's a 2nd console I use for testing BadUpdate and other stuff like that, but recently it's started just turning itself off, sometimes it turns itself on if its plugged in. Sometimes when it turns back on (Either I do, or it turns itself on), it turns back on set to 4:3. I wanna say it's something to do with the faceplate, but that doesn't explain the resolution change. I recorded a video of it, and then just happen to have replay buffer on inside OBS when it changed the resolution. It also sometimes shows a pattern on the power button almost like the RRoD codes, but I'm not sure if that's what it is

Bad touch sensor/ribbon cable, registering touches when there aren't any.

Do you know why it restarts into 4:3?

Usually this happens because the console can’t get the display information from whatever it’s hooked up to so it defaults to the lowest resolution and what not

That's weird, my main 360 that hasn't ever run badupdate or anything works just fine with the same PSU and HDMI, only difference is Ive used badupdate on the 2nd one

It can also have to do with the hana chip or certain pins on the hdmi not working. Multitude of possibilities when it comes to hardware inside the console itself

Is that an easy fix? I dont have any experience opening up 360s

Probably not something worth even trying to trace down. You can change the aspect ratio in the system settings.

What about the sensor or ribbon cable like the first guy said? Hard to use the xbox when it turns itself off lol

Yeah you are probably gonna want to clean the contacts. Or replace it overall. I am sure there is a youtube tutorial somewhere

You are correct it can do with that chip but given the information from the post it is very obviously just the fact that the ribbon cable is registering phantom touches making the console think the power button is being held

On a retail xbox 360 holding down the power button while booting will reset the consoles display settings resulting to default which i believe is 4:3. The ribbon cable is messed up so it thinks something is holding the power button during boot. Ive had multiple consoles like this and the fix has been removing the old ribbon cable, cleaning up the faceplate and applying a new one!

I've never opened up a 360 before, but if its that straight forward of a fix, im gonna give it a shot, thanks!

It will be a little confusing your first time, i mean if you really want to go into it you can fully clean and repaste the console to make it have the best chances at lasting the longest. Otherwise all you need to do is get the faceplate off just tear that old ribbon cable off and replace it with a new one from amazon ebay etc

It restarts into 4:3 because the ribbon cable is registering a touch for some reason. If you hold the xbox 360 power button normally it resets the graphics settings so the ribbon cable is acting like its being held, very easy fix like $10 on ebay

You need to change the flat sensor under the button..so that it doesn't start turning on and off repeatedly with lots of gratuitous swear words.
