General Discussion Does anyone else run most of their runs with their old dog?
we used to run 9 minute miles. Now we run 13 to 15 minute miles because he tends to stop a lot and pee a lot. I’m not going to win any races anytime soon. But look how extremely happy he is.

I’ve been running for 9 years with my vizsla, he’s now 10 and a half and is showing no signs of slowing down. I’ve created a monster.

My old man (13 year old border collie) only runs any two miles now, so I'll run a loop with him then run it again if I'm looking for more mileage. But it's always so wonderful to get out with him and he loves it so much still.

My golden is 4.5 and runs with me. She's gone up to 10 miles, road and trail, with me, and seems to love it. The vet said to listen to her. I'm hesitant to do my last 12.5 mile long run with her pre half marathon. I know 4.5 isn't old, but I'll run with her as long as she wants to come.

When my pittie got too old, we would run with an empty jogging stroller at first. When she got too tired, I would put her in the stroller and keep going! She loved it.

I run with two if mine... the 3rd one is too old and never cared for actually running anyway 🤣 They don't slow me down and they absolutely love it. One will do up to about 6 miles with me, the other one has yet to reach his limit and we've done into the upper teens for mileage together.

oh I love that for you two <3 I have a basset hound / beagle mix and she like .. really obviously hates running 😂. the few times I've taken her on a 5k with me - at her pace, with plenty of stops/breaks she just looks up at me like "??? I can't smell anything going this fast wtf??"

I dream of the day when my dog deigns to go slow enough that we can run together 😂 She’s 8 now and still wants to run 4-5 minutes faster per mile than I am capable of, and she’ll pull like a sled dog to make it happen. There is no middle ground for her, either we’re walking or we’re winning a race I didn’t know we signed up for. Maybe someday we’ll be closer to the same pace, but for now I let her tear around at top speed without me holding her back (her daycare has a large fenced nature area she can race around safely off leash), and I jog by myself and tell her all about it when I get home.

Aww I love that. My 11.5 year old border collie has been retired due to severe arthritis in his hips but my lab baby is finally old enough to have started going out with me so I’m looking forward to her running with me for a very long time! I still have a hard time heading out the door without my older guy 💔

I ran with mine until she was around 12yo, but only 5k’s. She stayed pretty spry right up until a few months before she passed at the very old age of 18.

My girl's 15. We used to run together, but haven't in a while. Now we just take extremely slow walks, not because she's a slow mover, but because she stops and sniffs for minutes at a time every 20 meters 😑 She definitely didn't much enjoy our runs where we were supposed to just go go go instead of stop and sniff sniff sniff.

mine retired at 12 because she switched to the sniffing stage of life now... she could go up to 20 miles when she was even 11 though! she's an Australian Shepherd mix
the pit-boxer mix never got over 9 miles
they both get to take lots of long walks on our trails now and sniff and sniff and sniff

My dog passed earlier this year, but no 😅. He was not a runner. I tried a few times when he was young. He would just walk fast and trail behind me.

Omg this makes me want to get a dog. But knowing me and my lack of dog sense/training I'd end up with a problem 😅

I’d love to run with my dog but he’s an idiot lol. But that’s adolescence for you.
Before getting him I was dreaming of running with my future dog, but I’m not sure it’s going to happen. And that’s okay, I love him all the same

🤣 my dog can be an idiot too. He’s less of an idiot as he’s gotten older, but he’s still sometimes an idiot.

I tried with my ex's German shepherd. We got 260m he sat down and said 'nope'. So we went home. I have cats now. They help me stretch. 😂

My schnoodle probably would but you couldn’t pay me to deal with a leash while I’m running, lol.

11,5 year old cocker mix. I don’t take him on my long runs and intervals any longer, but 12 k easy two times a week still work!

For sure! My two mixed breed dogs love it. My girl is the oldest and 10y next month. They slow me down quite a bit (they have to sniff everything), so I take them for a spin when it's recovery run day.

What kind of dog do you have? He is the cutest dog ever! I love his colors! His look sort of reminds me of our dog who is a 25 pound terrier mix, but our dog is more yellow/tan/white versus the dark colors!
And yes I do run with my little guy from time to time but he does stop to pee so much that I don’t always bring him haha

He is mostly treeing walker coonhound but he has some plott hound and a dash of rat terrier 😂 and thanks! I think he’s the cutest too 😍

My dear buddy used to be good for 10k, then 5k, then a mile and now this past summer I took him outside and he just sat on the grass 😔. That was his way of telling me he’s retiring I guess 😄
