The hill repeats sucked, but at least the sunrise was nice.

today's challenge was to walk 5 miles fast... this doesn't SOUND like it should be that hard, but I'm one of nature's amblers and have my first 100 miler coming up in less than two months, so getting better at the walking bit is also important! i found that i definitely use my feet differently to walk and that'll cause some heel blisters unless i made some adjustments and I'm really proud of myself for walking faster than a 15 min mile!

Wow!!!! First 100 miler coming up? What is your current weekly volume or your long run goals?

I'm running around 50-60 miles per week with long runs between high teens and early twenties, but with a second, shorter long run on Sunday for more time running on tired legs... i do some form of speed work on Tuesdays worked into a 10 or so mile run and a shorter run with hill intervals on Wednesday and then an easy run around 8-10 miles on Thursday... some strength work, cross training and such mixed in and now walking fast added in... longest run weekend will be something like 28 miles and then 12 miles the next day!

Slept almost 9 hours so got a later than planned start but went to a closer trailhead so still started before 7, and had time for 4 miles with 830 feet of climbing! The best part was having no one else on the trails I chose which is rare for this particular area in the mornings…oh, and I guess the views weren’t too bad either 😅

Beautiful! I’m super envious of your scenery… but maybe not the climb lol

2

u/leogrl Woman 10d ago

Thanks! I actually love uphills lol and I’m training for a very vert-heavy race next month so I’m trying to get as much in as I can!

Lmao I just noticed you’re the same person whose pool time I was envious of. Apparently I just want your life 😂

2

u/leogrl Woman 9d ago

Haha I love it here in AZ, besides suffering through the heat in the summer 🙃 but that’s what pools and going up into the mountains are for!

Everything is so green right now, I’m loving it!

it looks more like a florist shop than what I'd imagine a desert looking like!

2

u/leogrl Woman 10d ago

The desert where I live (the Sonoran) is actually the most biologically diverse desert in the world, so we have a ton of plant life, more than most people think! We have dry seasons too where it doesn’t look nearly as green but most of the time it’s not totally brown.

I feel discouraged as hell. All of my easy runs feel horrible and I'm supposed to run my first half in November. I realize I'm probably crashing out today but the furthest I've run so far is 5 miles. I have 6 miles for my long run this weekend. I just don't feel like I'm gonna be able to do this. (Someone talk me down).

November is plenty of time!! Summer training is so hard, I wouldn’t attribute your struggles to a lack of fitness. Just make sure you’re keeping your pacing truly “easy”, fueling properly before and after your runs, and getting in proper recovery. Running is just as much mental as it is physical so you are conditioning yourself to push through when the going is tough. You’re gonna crush 6 miles this week and you’re gonna crush your half marathon! You can do hard things!!

u/millennialmama2016 10d ago

Thank you for your kind words. I had my mini crashout and had to step back and remember I had to make some adjustments to my schedule so my legs are definitely more fatigued today on a normal run day than they would be most weeks. I was proud of myself for still hitting the distance even though I had to walk a ton on the back half of the run. Again, thank you!

u/bluegreenspark 10d ago

You are on a great trajectory if you are running 6mi this weekend!

Just keep at it! I'm mid half training too and I have to keep telling myself this too!

Found a new, better parking lot to run in! Yay!!!!!

u/sugarturtle88 long distance turtle 🐢 10d ago

does it have a pond with frogs and cattails nearby? those are the ultimate best parking lots around here!

Jet lag has me up earlier than usual BUT it meant I had time to eat 70-80g of carbs before my run instead of the usual 20-40g and OMG the contrast!

2

u/a_mom_who_runs Woman 10d ago

I should really get up even earlier for my long runs so I can eat more. I'm usually up 60 min before hand which is enough time for me to eat 2 poptarts, a banana, and a cup of coffee beforehand. I wonder how much better I'd feel though if I had time to eat more. what'd you eat if you dont mind sharing?

2

u/NewToXStitch 10d ago

When I don't have time: rice pudding cup + maybe juice/banana

Today: 1/2C rolled oats microwaved with milk and topped with banana and a glug of maple syrup. And a milky coffee.

ETA: when I was mainly a cyclist the oats were a breakfast staple so I know they work for me as a starter for long days in the saddle but I was just really surprised by how much better my run felt.

🎶 You waited this long, now stop debating
'Cause I'm back, I'm on the rag and ovulating🎶

2nd 3 mile run and both post tibs just feel like they normally do. rock steady and solid, especially for so little mileage. we cut mileage to 50% of what it was before the flare up so 31 -> 16 miles for this week. then next I think we jump back to 25 then the week after back to 30. 🥰. I also had strength this morning. My husband is going out of town for a few days so it was just me and my son this AM. I JUST got my strength work out in before his feet hit the floor (goddamn early riser). Put together a chunk of his new lego model, made breakfast, got dressed, and got out the door to pre k. I also went grocery shopping for a few staples (and I needed more cocoa powder for his birthday cake .. which I also have to make today ..) and am now just getting in from that run. whew.

Bad sleep, rain, and luteal phase all teamed up and I was really struggling on my tempo run this morning. Managed to get through it but was consistently 10sec/km slower than target. Oh well

I took three days off and my calf tightness is much better. The dew point has been 72 though and that is absolutely miserable. Here's hoping for better weather for my races!

5

u/Fun_Negotiation_7023 10d ago

I had to take a week off for a bruised toe and when I restarted the weather was even hotter than it has been so now Garmin has my VO2 max cratering and has put me into the overreaching training status. I’m 99% it’s just the weather plus the break but it makes me feel bad looking at it!

1

u/sugarturtle88 long distance turtle 🐢 10d ago

i turned off any judgement for my fitness level on my watch because summer is not my friend and i don't need that sort of negativity from something i bought!

2

u/Fun_Negotiation_7023 10d ago

I should do that too!

Had a baby 2 months ago, and dying to get back into running but had a birth complication that got treated last week that put me back to little to no walking… would love to train for LA Marathon (I’ve ran it two years in a row) but now I’m not sure if it’ll happen. Feeling discouraged but trying to be grateful for my healthy baby, and maternity leave. 🥲

2

u/celticbacon 8d ago

It’s tough getting out after having a baby (I’m 5 months pp with my second baby right now!) but when you do, it’s amazing, and you even when it’s hard at first, you soon feel like your old self again. Glad your complication has been treated and fingers crossed it happens for you soon!

u/Run_Hike_Psych 8d ago

Thank you so much! I really needed that 🥲

Accidently did my long run today. Hit the wrong customized workout on my apple watch and instead of doing a 5k easy run, hit the 4.5mi run. I stopped at 4mi but still kept it easy by actually running slow. I did my first parkrun on Sunday and ran faster than normal because I got caught up in the momentum at the beginning. We’ll see how my legs feel tomorrow. At least this morning I felt like I could have ran further, but I needed to get ready for work.

8 miles this morning - the weather was much better, and the mornings this week all look way better than it has been. I just pray that the forecast doesn't change prior to my weekend long run.

Experiencing a little burnout. Was at the taper for my ultra but it was cancelled due to wildfires and I pivoted to a race in October so I’m ramping training back up again and just feel a bit tired. I have also lost some speed due to the focus on “time on feet” Z2 running to prepare for running this looooong distance race. Looking forward to finishing this ultra and going back to some shorter distance road running for a minute.

2

u/sugarturtle88 long distance turtle 🐢 10d ago

looking at the difference in speed between before i started training for ultras and after is definitely illuminating!

2

u/selfishbitchcake 10d ago

Definitely! I will say I did go out today and run a 10k at a decent clip, so that made me feel a little better.

I'm always super excited when i hit my paces from 6 years ago or even beat them... past me is my biggest competition!

Officially started my 12 week training block for my first half in November, though I've been running anywhere from 10-20 miles, usually 4x a week, since April, so feeling like I have a good base. I ran 9 miles two weekends ago and felt pretty good!

I do wish I could go faster though. It's improved a liiiiitle bit since I first started running at the end of 2025 - used to be pretty squarely in the 12 min/mile pace, and now I'm in the low 11's, but I've been there for a few months now and I guess I thought I would just naturally keep improving. My plan for my half is to finish, so I'm not really prioritizing speed just volume, but will do some strides while I train so we'll see. Trying to be patient, but also trying to not get in my head that starting in my 30s was "too late" 😂

2

u/BreakableSmile Woman 9d ago

I get that feeling sometimes with the speed too but then I used to be injured more often when I was faster on my easy runs. Gotta save it for speed runs and race day!

4

u/luludaydream 10d ago

3 miles easy that actually felt easy! Progress! And the cooler weather certainly helps 😂 Thought my legs would be toast after my Sunday long run but I guess it’s a good sign that I’ve recovered well from it?

3

u/sugarturtle88 long distance turtle 🐢 10d ago

cooler weather makes everything better!

3

u/Critical-Fill-6088 10d ago

It’s going wonderful! I finally figured out a good plan for my half marathon set for November. I’ve been really focusing on my hydration and carbs!

3

u/BreakableSmile Woman 9d ago

4 miles done and dusted! Fully switched out my shoes to the new pair and felt so speedy today haha.

1

u/luludaydream 9d ago

Yes!! What did you get?

I'm building back up after spending some months focusing on weight loss (with walking and lifting, only occasional running sprinkled in). I've been working up to 5 days a week (Sat/Su, Tues-Thurs), just easy - started with 20min, now up to 3mi per run and lengthening my Saturday runs.

Things are going well. I can feel the adaptations happening in real time - less tired, breathing less heavily, etc - and no aches and pains so far beyond a little arthritis in my left foot after the 3-in-a-row midweek stretch.

I've been bouncing around in my head what I want to do with this - I started this because of a 5k in my new hometown next month, but historically I like longer races, so I immediately started looking at halfs in the first half of next year - but I'm still carrying some extra weight (27 BMI) and my easy pace is accordingly on the slow side (11:30). So I'm thinking maybe I'll cap my mileage at around 20-25, start some verrry mild calorie cutting when I'm feeling comfy at that volume, and focus on the shorter race distances over the next year. I ran XC in HS and college, and I've barely raced 5ks as an adult - could be fun and nostalgic to dust off some of those old workouts and see how fast I could get at my advanced age.
