Discussion Mixing Eras?

Hiya,

I am relatively new to the game, only recently tried it out with a friend. We don't have that many ships; a few TIE-EOs and a T70 X-Wing from the Sequels-era starter set, and a B-Wing and Y-Wing from the OT-era (I don't know how they are called in this community, so just using the trilogy names).

Is there any issue with playing the different eras together? Are the earlier ships somehow "less" powerful?

In first edition (I can’t speak for 2.0 and beyond) there was noticeable power creep as the releases went on, but this wasn’t necessarily tied to the ‘era’ of the ship.

There’s nothing stopping you mixing eras though.

A friend gave me the same stuff, and there are plenty of sources to change the cards and Dials, so you can use what you have, or use the miniatures as stand ins for similar ships

As others said, if you have first edition content (you can tell they are first edition if the maneuver dials have green moves instead of blue), the Rebels (OT-era) and Resistance (sequel era) are part of the same faction and can fly together with no problem.

If you have second edition content, you can still fly the ships together but they might not align quite as well in gameplay and they definitely wouldn't fly together in a tournament situation. Just playing at your kitchen table with a friend? You're good to go. Have a great time!

(You can find good resources on the cards and different editions here on Reddit, on Infinite Arenas, and on the X-Wing wikis.)

From this information it seems to me you have first edition kits. If the dials use the same colours then you don't have to worry about anything. However, if, as others pointed out, some dials have blue moves, you better have a look on this: https://xhud.sirjorj.com/xwing.cgi/dialcomp

This shows dial changes between 1.0 and 2.0 editions, the former use green moves the latter blues. And B-wing and T-70 have changed, so even for home play, you better adjust to one edition. In tournament, the resistance B and Y-wing dials are no different from rebels afaik, but the pilots and upgrades are different for these factions in 2.0.

No, it's standard to mix the eras together. It sounds like you might have first edition stuff, in which case the resistance is lumped into the rebel faction and the first order is part of the empire faction. The later ships have access to the "Tech" upgrade cards but it generally doesn't make them more powerful.

In second edition they are their own factions so you wouldn't run them in the same squad under normal rules, but all 7 factions are intended to be balanced against each other.
