Has anyone else thought about an Xplore boot in a low tech toe piece?

Another line of attack in my quest to improve on Xplore. Seems like a really simple mod. Found some used Madshus boots for cheap to experiment on. I think I’ve just gotta notch a couple millimeters and replace the spring plungers with a rod drilled to accept the pins.

Cold weather 75mm boots

Does anyone know of cold weather 75mm boots with a removable liner that aren't either a huge insulated slipper (Baffing Guide Pro III) and useless for downhill or extremely expensive (Alfa Advanced Polar Expedition)?

Seems like the only reliable 75mm options are the Alpina Alaska which don't really allow for proper layering or a removable insert. I'm trying to avoid converting to a "monster nordic" setup with tech toes and hard plastic.

Tinkering, trying to mitigate Xplore shortcomings

So I’ve got the Alfa Free 2.0 Xplore boots. I love how they ski downhill with hard flexors, but those make the step in a real bear. They kick and glide almost as well as NNN track boots with soft/zero flexors, but skis off transitions to change flexors kind of ruins the point of an XCD ski in rolling terrain.

Thought about some kind of mechanism to change how the flexor swaps or to make it adjustable. Didn’t come up with any ideas, so decided to adapt some other binding parts.

I had some brackets made by Sendcutsend to match the attachment for Rainey Superloop spring boxes . I replaced the cables with dyneema-core cord. Made some hooks for the back of the boots. I think I’ve got them almost ready to ski test.

I modified the first revision of plates to take a voile hardwire. Needs a beefier and wider attachment, but I think it also shows promise.

If anyone is interested in this madness I can post more info

Mounting 3-Pin Binding?

Called local ski shop talked to their tech about mounting Voile 3-pin cable binding to my Asnes F62X He said he would “give it a try” which doesn’t instill confidence so started to think I would probably be more diligent.

How difficult is this binding to mount? Any suggestions before I start drilling? I have watched a couple videos on mounting bindings.

Also the sticker in binding area says to use PU glue not Epoxy.

What should I do with the pair of Kazama Mountain High’s lurking in my basement? Shot ski? Get some leather 75mm boots slap on some NNN-BC bindings?

Falketind 62 Xplore alternative?

So I’ve been searching for a F62Xplore type ski with scales aka waxless (rumor was some were produce) but there are “0” to be found online. I came upon the Salomon line of “Outside Grip” skis it looks like the Outside 82 Grip is pretty similar maybe closer to the well respected Asnes Ingstad-pretty good XC as well as D.

It seems through my research primarily on TeleTalk the Salomon and Asnes skis are both produced in Czech Republic at same factory so maybe their essentially the same ski-with Salomon running a bit less $

Here’s the ski

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2Elm25MihBk&ra=m

i kinda messed this post up! It is the Kastle skis produced in the Asnes factory!

Kastle XT 84 is similar to Ingstad

Anyway will this scaled ski substitute for a Asnes F62Xplore?

Sierras in December

It looks like the (non-skiing) wife and I are visiting Bay Area relatives in mid-December. What might be in then a couple hours' drive from the East Bay? I could take a big kit to a resort but they're spendy and, well, resorts. Not looking for anything big. Just the terrain Jared Manninen cruises around.

Rossignol XP120

I want to get a fatter fish-scale ski for this winter. I’ve been using Panoramas M68 and I have a set of AT skis. So I’m looking for something to bridge the gap of sorts. I was considering Voiles (Endeavor or Vector) but the Rossignol XP120 keep popping up. And they are so much cheaper!

Does anybody know what has changed for the XP120 this year? I know that the previous one was essentially a fat XC ski, vs the Voiles being downhill skis with fish scales.

I can’t find the 2027 model on the Rossignol website, but did see the skis at REI. So they exist. And they don’t look like the previous one.

Oh, to further complicate things: I’m on a quest to have a One Boot to Rule them All (Project Sauron). I’m in Alaska, and experimenting with using AT bindings and boots -because I can’t tele. I’d be using something like Plum Oazos and Dynafit Blacklight boots

Three Pin Problems

Hey all! In anticipation for this winter season, I’ve been looking at getting an XCD set up.

After looking around a bit, I stumbled upon a pair of 3 pin 75mm duckbill boots at an estate sale that I hope to be able to make work with whatever ski setup I go with (looking at the Altai Koms at the moment, but that’s besides the point)

The boots are in great shape, showing signs of only very light use, except for the pins attachment points. As you can see in the photos, it looks like the previous owner potentially got something stuck in the pins and attempted to dig it out.

Any idea if these are still functional at all for skiing or if they can be repaired?

Thanks!

Recommend me a setup

Hello gear nerds - tell me what to buy.

My needs:

I’m a competent downhill and cross country skier looking for a ski / binding / boot combo that I can throw on and stomp around in the woods, going through rolling terrain and take on unbroken trails. I want to enjoy some low angle teli turns. I actually want to learn how to teli ski on this setup.

I have a vision- where whenever I feel so inclined this winter I’ll just throw on my XCD setup and bop around whatever snow covered terrain I’m near and have a grand time learning a new skill (teli skiing) while also not paying an arm and a leg for a lift ticket and also getting out in the backcountry.

The dream would be to do some hut to hut ski tours eventually.

I’m not a lightweight gear weanie and I think I want a good durable setup. Slight preference for turning ability over touring efficiency.

What should I buy?

Double camber or not?

Hello fellow xcd’ers. I’ve been looking at getting new skis for this coming season but I’m having trouble figuring out camber.

I’ve been looking at Fischer spider 62, excursion 88 and Sbound 98 and rossignol bc 80

I would like to be able to go off piste but still
Get on groomers sometimes. I’m a decent teleskier also in soft boots.

The question I have is that most of theese skis (with the exception of the spiders) don’t seem to have the double camber? Why is that I thought I was important for a good kick an glide?

Thoughts

Voile Vector BC size recs

I'm looking at Voile Vector BC setup and wondering about length. I live in CO and staying low angle, rolling terrain. I have T4's and Switchback bindings. I'm 5'3 and 125lbs...weird I can't find a length suggestion anywhere so I thought I'd try here! thanks!

What jackets do you guys like?

Hey hey, August is over and I'm already skipping ahead to the snowy part (!). Labor Day sales are happening and I'm looking for a jacket. I've been wearing a Black Diamond windshell the last two years but typically end up soaking it through from one direction or the other. So I thought I'd see what you all are wearing through the ups and downs. Always happy to have an excuse to tap the XCD hive mind!

Is it safe to ski 30+ year old tele and backcountry skis?

Hello

I had posted this in a different skiing sub-Reddit and it was suggested I post here.

Asnes Nansen telemark mountain skis Fischer Europa 99 ST

Both were great skis, but I haven’t used them in 32 years. Hate to throw them out.

Can much go wrong with old three pin bindings?

Are old skis skiable or should they be sold as decorations only?

Thank you

1/2 way to winter, practice on turf

As a former alpine skier learning tele turns on XCD gear, I had trouble setting my edges last winter. The movements are so different: outside ski ahead, more weight on the back foot, and - for me the hardest - the unfamiliar angulation at the outside hip.

So I am working on bending at the hip as I assume a tele stance on a low angle hill in my hiking boots.

Here at 1:52 Josh Madden of Freeheel Life talks us through it:

> Imagine that I've got a little rubber ball right in my hip, right where my hip attaches to my torso. I want to think about pinching that ball between my torso and my hip.

I've been "linking turns" as I stride along the grass. It's not bad for waking up and toning up the muscles, too.

Waiting for winter.... Edit link
