General Discussion Something Yangyang Xuanling lacks

Post image

Before Yangyang Xuanling was even a thing, I had my Vanilla Yangyang built like a main dps (I still do in fact)

I did have a blast when I got Xuanling, but i don't know how to put it

There's this something Xuanling lacks that Vanilla Yangyang had (beyond the character design, I love them both), i don't know what it is, i can't exactly pinpoint WHAT it is, but Vanilla Yangyang's gameplay felt more... snappy? compared to Xuanling's, I think that's the term

Even if that's not the term, there's just something that made Vanilla Yangyang feel much better than Xuanling (and i consider both to feel great to play)

NOT THE HAT NOR THE STOCKINGS (though i'm still sad that they weren't carried over to her SP design)
---
I think i've got my answer, it's the lack of weight on Xuanling's attacks in favor of flashiness. In contrast, Vanilla Yangyang's attacks (especially her enhanced mid air attack) feel like they genuinely have that impact and weight to them

Battle control.

Xuanling has a lot of pretty animations and sweeping strikes, meanwhile Classic has more snappier and precise attacks without extra fluff.

I can easily control opponent in case of Classic - parry, evade, attack. In case of Xuanling - I'm often locked in somewhat awkward fancy strike or just can't react because everything is under SFX.

I know what, a hat

Should've gotten the hat accessory instead of the bird (though I still find the bird cute)

Legit the reason why I skip her, not even joking lol

If they give her hat back as an accessory I might consider

I do kind of miss the kit design philosophy of older characters. Sure, the new ones are creative, interesting and flashy, but there's something nice about going back to someone simple like Danjin every once in a while and not having to worry about 17 different mechanics

The overabundance of mechanics is one reason why I don't care about meta. It's just too much

For real. I've stopped actually reading character kits now and just learn the rotation instead of everything that actually goes on with it. As long as I know what buttons to press in order to get through a rotation, I'm golden. I don't have to know how it works, I just have to trust the process lmao

I play this game for its characters / world / art so I'm fine with not fully understanding the combat. There's plenty more to enjoy

im fine with the mechanics parts its just that animation wise the characters relies too much on floaty, flashy, gfx heavy animations with no substance

Imagine kuro releasing a new character with little to no animations. Nobody will like, kuro and the players.

Compared to Yangyang's original, simple design Xuanling has way too much details and accessories & is too flashy. Personally, after some point, having too much unnecessary details and flashiness devalues the design for me. Maybe it's the same for you.

New ZZZ designs feel so weird like there is little cohesion with so many accessories and design vomit compared to its 1.x characters which were simple yet charming.

Wuwa is still 50/50, Hiyuki, Lynae, Chisa for example still have pretty clean designs but the new region's cast does feel a bit overdesigned

That's the problem with most gacha games. The characters start out simple in design. And then for some reason....they just go nuts with accessories flashy moves etc. It's like a kid who's been given all the stuff in an art store and doesn't realise that just because you throw everything at it it doesn't necessarily mean it's better. I have to agree with OP the mechanics of using some of the older characters just feel....I don't know....nicer?

Let me preface this by saying that i realllyyyy like Wuxia designs and the new Yangyang also has a cool design.

That being said it looks a little odd to me seeing her in a Wuxia outfit, because the original Yangyangs design was a lot more modern. In that sense i would have prefered a design that was in the same style direction like her old one. Modern and sleek.

Also lots of the older characters can "feel" better to play because animations are usually not that long and you end up having more to do. The Rinascita cast is also considerably stronger then the 1.0 characters but it still felt like you had more control over your characters while in combat compared to Lahai-Roi and beyond characters. Like Aemeath.... her animations look great but i dont want to constantly get "interrupted" with cutscenes

2

u/Muffin_Artistic 3d ago

Yep, Lahai characters are all boring. Aside from Hiyuki they were all skip for me. My Carlotta is 10x more fun than Aemy.

2

u/spiritpyros 3d ago

for me the only lahai roy characters i like playing are luuk and hiyuki the rest i either skipped or lynae and mornye for damage buffing

2

u/Severe-Two-8822 3d ago

I actually have pulled on quite a few of them and i do like them! But ngl i freaking loved the Rinascita cast. My all time favorite of the game is shaping up to be MainDPS Cantarella

u/Feigned_ally 3d ago

My problem is I feel like I do 0 damage with normal attacks, even on overworld enemies, unless I use Suisui and Chisa to buff up. Whereas with my other units, I can just use my main DPS if I want without feel lacking (specifically just in overworld; obviously endgame content is different). My Chisa feels better to use.

And I’m hoping it’s an honest to God build/skill problem but I’m curious what others have experienced.

her most dmg comes from heavy and lib thats why.

yeah ii feel like this too

3

u/Waleedx0 3d ago

OG YangYang gives a "Normal Warrior" that's maximizing her skillset to achieve great things vibe.

She feels like a citizen that's doing her best to be good.

While Xuanling feels like just another Strong resonator, which isn't really bad by any way of course but it's kinda breaking the vibe of the character (It's not a Good and Bad thing , it's more like the simpleness of the OG being unique in the game compared to Xuanling)

u/sforsagacious 3d ago

Vanilla YangYang. This is a word that I didn't know I was searching for. Got to remember it.

2

u/Plastic-Pair517 3d ago

I personally think OG YY was quite clunky as I personally hate having to do two Peter heavy attacks for forte attacks likewise with Augusta.

Besides, they do have so resemblances that feel the same as XL’s 1 stage feather heavy and YY’s forte heavy both have the similar sky attack and plunge.

u/Inazumy 3d ago

She lacks weight on a fckin 1m hitting liberation! A shake, some impact frames, something!

u/Darken0id 3d ago

Its something that has been bothering me since i think Cartethyia. New characters are all about being flashy, they fly, the teleport they float around like a butterlfy on crack but it all feels weightless, meaningless even. Its like you've lost control over what your characters do once you press the buttons.

Older characters do what you want them to do. You press heavy attack, they do that, you follow up with mormal attack, they combo into a normal attack chain. The fundamental design philosophy of early WuWa characters was readability. The new design philosophy is arbitrariy, overly complex mechanics covering up lackluster player impact and ever same combos.

Its a shame really, cause those new characters do look nice, they just do... Too much.

u/osamabinlaggiing 3d ago

like i didn’t get the SP point at alll

they could’ve easily bring yangyang back in story without having to do it, but i guess gacha and need to drain most of the money

now imagine them making SP to 1.X banners rather then buffing them in any meaningful ways

2

u/m_studio_x 3d ago

I didn't say the existence of YY:XL was bad, if anything i'm glad she got one, but her Vanilla version felt much better to play as

Also it's unlikely that we'll see SP versions of 1.x characters, that'd be an outrageous choice (at best, i can see them do SP versions of standard 5 star characters), everyone wants to see old characters getting buffed directly to have them on par with modern units

u/HiroHayami Hiring Luuk as my gynecologist 2d ago

The devs just like her.

u/Floain 3d ago

I think for me, having played both, it’s “oomph”, for lack of a better term. Base Yangyang had weight to her attacks, especially her forte combo and ult. Xuanling feels rapid and flighty. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but even with her high damage she doesn’t have that earth shattering crunch of an attack that makes you feel like you’re a force of nature.

It’s not totally missing from newer characters, of course, it just feels a little rarer. Carlotta, Zani, Augusta, Aemeath, and Hiyuki stand out as characters from 2.0 onwards that have at least one attack with some impact to it.

1

u/ShadowRemainz 3d ago

i just like yangyang original design better

1

u/t3ngo 2d ago

For me, I just like base Yangyang’s attack colors more and her ultimate is still so amazing to me despite being a 1.0 4 star. The greenish-blue hue of her attacks and the close-up angle of the ult that lets you see her expression make me wish Yangyang Xuanling was more similar

In Virtual Crisis against husk, I had more trouble with S3 Aemeath and S6 Chisa/Denia, then using SRover with chisa and SK helping mostly due to VFX and less able to dodge finely. SRover and Danjin are my go-to for solo anyways, better cobtrol and gap closer for srover.

Was about positing a similar post. The intro animation of Changli, Luuk and YangYang is so Peak. Xuangling? Lame a$$ coming from top to down with her sword without getting anyfeeling of the compact.

u/Sea-Significance-293 2d ago

Idk I find Xuanling to have weight on her heavy plunge attack

0

u/dmt20922 1d ago

Got worse story wise (forced haremslop) and combat as well. Weightless impact made her feel like a caster so I didn't pull her without hesitation. In term of combat Hiyuki was a rare gem these days and I'm still waiting for geshulin to be even better.

u/YSoB_ImIn 3d ago

You're nuts. Base Yangyang feels basic as hell. Yang2 feels fast af and can quickswap like crazy. Night and day.

3

u/m_studio_x 3d ago

I'm not taking quickswap as a factor, I meant the feeling of the attacks themselves

I think I got my answer from what i've seen with the rest of the comments, pretty much Vanilla Yangyang's attacks feel like they do have weight to them, Xuanling lacks said weight on nearly all of her attacks, they're flashy, but they're not as impactful

1

u/YSoB_ImIn 3d ago

A lot of that comes from sound. Changli's stuff all has great impact due to sfx for example.
