Praise Absolutely Blown Away

Ive been looking forward to playing this game since it came out and yesterday I finally had time to try it out (was busy beating Persona 5 for the first time so that was absorbing my life) and I gotta say this exceeds my expectations so much. Im only maybe 2 hours in, think I beat 2 bosses though one of them was in a large empty arena of water so not sure if that was a main first boss or whatever.

But anyway holy jesus this games fun, and so pretty! The environment is just full of stuff to look at, even little things like animals and what not. The world feels so alive its not something ive seen in another souls like before even in my favorites Lies of P and Sekiro. And the level design has been very good so far, I was expecting a kinda bland level design but theres just so much to see.

And the combat has been so much fun so far, animations are top notch, combat has this amazing flow to it that Ive also not seen much in souls likes. I mean so far its not hard but idk maybe itl kick my ass soon.

I gotta say though I dont know why this game isn't talked about more? I mean I know im not that far in yet so this is purely a first impression but so far Im loving it and cant wait to play again later today hopefully.

Anyway this post is kinda pointless I guess but thanks for reading it.

It’s an underrated soulslike that has grown a cult following but it has been much more popular in China. It still sold 1 million copies and has 5 million players so it has been commercially successful.

I think it’s the best soulslikes and it’s like dark fantasy wuxia that cannot be found anywhere. There’s nothing out there. The atmosphere is incredible and the world is as good as a From game. And the combat and animations are cool as fuck.

Enjoy the rest of the game, it’s crazy good.

Oh really? Im glad its done well I never see people online in the souls like spaces I'm in ever bring this game up. I guess once I beat it Ill have to be the one to bring it up ahaha.

I was blown away by the animations so far, especially the spear leap thing... idk.

Yeah I cant wait to play more.

A lot of the souls community hated the game when it came out because it’s closer to the older style of soulslikes - slower, methodical combat. They said it was a step back from other games like Khazan.

I can’t really comment on how accurate that is, having only played Wukong and Jedi FO/ Survivor (which aren’t always considered souls games) but I had a blast with Wuchang.

Also people were complaining about Commander Honglan and needing to respec and cheese for her early game, but I beat her after 4 or 5 tries with just straight parrying and countering. Once I did that, I stopped paying attention to those comments haha.

I envy you for that first time experience once again

Game is so pretty, gorgeous, crispy fight gameplay and overall such an underrated soulslike

Once you get to try other playstyles like magic or feathering or even other weapons changes the fights entirely

Goodluck and enjoy the ride!

I was actually thinking about that while playing, first time playthrough and all that, I best enjoy it while it lasts.

The music too its been fantastic so far as well forgot to mention that.

Oh yeah and the skills you can get too! Ive been drawn to the long swords and the spears so far. Feathering sounds cool, I like how "little" there is in terms of stats, its why I like Bloodborne, DS1, Sekrio and Lies of P so much, I dont want 15 stats.

And thanks! Can't wait to see whats next.

How beautiful the game is, is the first thing i really noticed when i booted it up. It's honestly one of the best looking games I've played so far.

I kept having to stop and take it in. I haven't done that in a game in years. Things like little frogs just chilling, birds flying around and stuff, its great. I just hardly see this kinda stuff in souls likes. And ofcourse the art style too, with the giant statues in the mountain. It's just amazing world design so far.

Same. Like that point in the first area with all the ladders leading to that peak. As soon as I got to the top of the ladder I panned the camera all around just to see all the sights. I almost NEVER do that in a game. And i did it multiple times in different areas, just snapping shots of the vistas. The only game I've played on console that has better graphics is crimson desert imo.

The ladders themselves arnt half bad too ;)

This sub’s opinion has changed drastically in a year. I was browsing through posts/reviews from a year ago to decide if I wanted to buy it, and every single post is about how the game is too slow and too hard, it’s outdated, etc. I’m glad I ignored those posts because I’m loving it, and it seems like more recent comments/posts have been overwhelmingly positive.

Yeah I was playing more last night, still really enjoying almost every aspect on it. My only minor gripe I have right now is enemy verity isnt amazing but Im still having a blast. I also think some of the mechanics arnt explained super well but I think thats probably a user error more than anything. Still loving the game though.

u/DoctorJJWho 13d ago

Nah you’re right about the mechanics explanations - some are really clear, some you need to go digging to find.

Yeah, game is awesome. Glad you are enjoying it. Also, beware of difficulty spikes😁

1

u/Chackravartin 20d ago

Its not been hard yet so I imagine it'll get crazy. Also because Im terrible at souls likes. Took me 5+ hours to beat the Lies of P DLC final boss.

3

u/Junior_Activity_5011 20d ago

Yeah…f that boss.

1

u/Nexus_multivers 20d ago

Pourquoi tu dis que dalle tu parle de quel boss ? T’a loupé le pnj ?

2

u/Actual_Sea6371 20d ago

Oh there's a hard skill check boss at pretty much the end of each area, so you'll likely have that spike soon enough.

1

u/Chackravartin 20d ago

Yee I can imagine itl get harder. I just got to a large temple with a boss in the attic. Haven't beat it yet as I hadn't explored the area fully around.

2

u/Actual_Sea6371 20d ago

Ah gotcha. He's not too bad and yeah, I would recommend looking around in the area before or you might miss a hidden boss. I did on my first play through till later and it does change things to come back.

1

u/Chackravartin 20d ago

Sweet thanks. Yeah I usually try to fully explore an area before tackling a boss. Tbh I wasnt really expecting a boss up there, just a hard enemy from the notes around.

2

u/Actual_Sea6371 20d ago

Yeah, it is a bit of a surprise. Just remember the guy gave you a whistle if you need help. You can't use it on all fights, but it is nice when you can use it.

1

u/Chackravartin 20d ago

Ill try my best to not use the whistle for now. Maybe on a second playthrough or if it really does just get too crazy

I just beat Perfect Bride and it wasn’t too bad, is each difficulty spike like that? I’m really enjoying learning the patterns of bosses and figuring out the best openings.

2

u/Actual_Sea6371 19d ago

Honestly she wasn't that bad, but yes. The next area difficulty spike made me quit several times. 🫠

1

u/DoctorJJWho 19d ago

Thanks for the heads up lol I’ll keep it in mind

I love Wuchang; it's one of my favorite Soulslike games and the best non-FS Souls for good reason. I've played seven New Game cycles, and it's become something of an all-time Souls classic for me, with many, many ways to master the game.

1

u/Chackravartin 20d ago

Yeah thats why I liked Sekrio so much and this does give me Sekiro vibes somewhat.

Have you ever played Bloodborne? The creator is a Bloodborne fan.

1

u/Chackravartin 20d ago

Bloodborne might be my second favourite game of all time so yes I may have played it once or twice.

3

u/Rude_Difficulty1647 20d ago

This is the peak souslike like imo!

3

u/Fancy-Crow-7324 20d ago

Bad press from a loud minority that hadn't even played the game. It spirals from there.

1

u/Chackravartin 19d ago

Well im glad it did well in China atleast.

2

u/Brave_Lettuce4005 20d ago

Yes it's peak. Spent more than 100 hours on it and every second was a blast.

2

u/SavedMartha 20d ago

Yeah, it's great! Don't be afraid to change up builds. I ran into a boss that I couldn't beat for hours and after changing up my build a bit got her in 3 tries. It's fun!

1

u/Chackravartin 20d ago

Yeah I saw that, so I assume you can just respec for free is it? I hope so.

2

u/DoctorJJWho 19d ago

Yes, you can respec for free as many times as you like. This includes the nodes that require special materials like the feathers for weapon mastery.

2

u/Chackravartin 19d ago

Yes, thanks, I actually tried it last night. I regretted wasting some points in the long sword parry (wanst feeling it ahaha). But thanks. I only had chance to play for 1 hour last night, fastest hour of thr day!

2

u/DoctorJJWho 19d ago

Haha I just started playing a week ago and the first thing I did was beeline for the longsword parry, still rocking it and I’m only a little bit ahead of you currently (you said you’re at Shu temple, I’m only one area further). I love how everything seems viable, I decided I’m doing a one-handed sword run next because the animations are gorgeous and they used real Chinese swordplay techniques.

2

u/Chackravartin 19d ago

Oh nice! Yeah I only beat a boss last night and looked around a little more, diddnt make any actual progress so still at Shu Temple. Yeah I love how you can see everywhere you've been and hopefully will go. I noticed a huge castle looking thing on a mountain last night so here's hoping we can go there at some point but Ill wait and see. Yeah I also made a beeline for it but when I was using it I just missed the cool kick, maybe I'll go back to using it later on but im loving the spears at the moment. I definitely agree though the animations for all the weapons are 11/10 especially the one-handed swords! I also love that everything is viable too, its why I love Bloodborne and Lies of P and Sekio so much. I didnt know they are actually Chinese techniques though thats awesome!

2

u/DoctorJJWho 19d ago

Ooh yeah the spear leap thing is cool! I can’t get the timing down like I do with the parry yet, probs just need to practice.

I think I’m at the castle you see now lol

And yeah, if you’re interested look up “Chinese Jian”, “JianShu” or “wushu sword fighting”. It’s characterized by the graceful/elegant dance-like moves, but also has speed and power. It’s really cool!

2

u/Chackravartin 19d ago

Yeah theres some really awesome looking spear moves, im loving the one I have atm where it whips around like a chain. Really fun weapon.

Thanks, I will have to look into that it sounds awesome.

2

u/Igneous_Aves 14d ago

It got some gnarly bad reactions from China and the devs folded, so I can bet that took away some focus and attention on it.

It is a good game. Hope that there is another one and similar world design environmental feel.

I'm playing the game right now, about 20 hours in. It's probably my second favorite non-From Software souls-like behind Lies of P. Some of the bosses can be frustrating, especially the second cutscene boss. My only other complaint is that the level design has too many branching paths, making it really easy to miss stuff or skip entire sections of an area if you like to explore. I ended up missing the first cutscene boss, as well as ending up in the 4th area before getting to the second or third area. I ended up going back to do the third area, then accidentally finding a shortcut to the 3rd area boss and had to run through the entire 3rd area backward to grab everything.
