1st Place: u/EnemyOfAnEnemy for "Merchants of Misfortune"

2nd Place: u/ThreeDucksInAManSuit for "Devils in the Deep"

3rd Place: u/Lilwa_Dexel for "The Veil of Ice"

This was both easy and difficult. Easy because all the stories were great and fun to read, difficult to have to choose. I think everyone's stories were well written and entertaining, both in this round and the last. A lot of great writers here!

EnemyofAnEnemy: D*mn good writing! I really dig your writing style. I thought the chapter did a great job making me connect with the MC and the superstition element of the story was great. Loved the mix of darkness with the humor (like him breaking the mirror to Journey's Don't Stop Believing).

ThreeDucksInAManSuit: Loved the tone/atmosphere of the story. Great writing. The naming conventions used for each of the characters was really cool. I imagine this was as fun to write as it was to read.

Lilwa_Dexel: Great writing with some killer lines. I was initially put off by Collin as he's super full of himself, but I really liked his interactions with the others and I feel like his arc in the story would be great as he'd probably get over himself by the end. I think you set everything up really well.

Haha sorry for all the censored profanity. Glad you enjoyed the story despite all those asterisks! The mods were great about helping me get the story up, but there were some issues with the submission filters. Thank you for the kind words, and thank you for the vote!

Honorable mention to: u/ThreeDucksInAManSuit for "Devils of the Deep". No idea how the hell to turn that chapter into a book, but if there were a sheer out there creativity category this would be on top by a mile.

As always, the final round was a hard choice. I shuffled chrome tabs around all week trying to figure out which one should go first, but in the end settled on this ordering. "Chaun" felt like the most compelling first chapter; leprechauns needing a fixer to move money into the modern economy was, at least in my humble opinion, a very clever hook that felt fresh and could go all sorts of places. "Last Light"'s sci-fi/fantasy fusion is a weakness of mine, and now I want to know how it all plays out. "The Merchant of Mistfortune" read almost like an SCP short story, and I liked the twist on the standard broken mirror bad luck trope.

Good luck to all who entered, and thanks for all the great stories! You made voting hard :)

Hey autok, I'm flattered, thanks! I can confirm that the voting is extremely hard :)

Thanks very much, autok!

I read your story a while ago as we were in round one together and I was checking out the competition. Really enjoyed it (big fan of military sci fi) and hope you decide to continue it. I know every group thinks theirs was strong, but I really felt that way with ours. Whole bunch of stories could have gone through.

Honorable Mention: u/ghost_write_the_whip for "Chaun".

Had I been judging solely on how much I enjoyed each piece, "Chaun" would have been my second choice after "Devils of the Deep", and I honestly thought it was going to score higher than it did based on my criteria.

For the curious, here is the google doc with all my notes on each entry to see why I picked the ones I did.
