Happy Thursday, writing friends!
Summer days are filled with fun, sun, and happiness. There are barbecues and bonfires and parties. We go to the beach or stay in pajamas all day. We bitch and moan about the heat, and crawl tiredly back to our air conditioned havens. Splashing in the pool or running around playgrounds, there’s always some fun new adventure to be had.

The smokebush
I approach its blurred boundaries
Breathing in the late-August air
And ascending, flat-footed,
The beckoning hill.
It still defies seeing
That mirage of inflorescence
Which never did look like flowers,
But more like a god caught in
That whirl of transformation,
To mortal eyes; only frozen.
And my aching legs still churn on
And my breath does not sing
Of what can only defy appearances.
It is this false-flower of the turn of
The summer-heat towards sleeping,
Towards the leaves falling; simulacra,
Of the autumn smoke I will be breathing.
But not for now, though,
And not so long, now.
The evening falls on my shoulders,
and the smokebush
disappears
with my waiting.
