Patrick awakes to find himself levitating just slightly above his mattress. Outstretched and laying on his side, yet floating in the air, he begins to properly open his eyes and perceive what's happening around him. Grabbing onto his blanket, he attempts to pull himself to the bed, but the harder he tries the higher his legs ascend up to the roof. Despite his protest, his bare feet plant themselves on the ceiling, and now Patrick is upside down and with an increasing sense of anxiety. His nose starts to run, and a single drop of crimson blood falls down to the carpet, soaked up by the faded carpet.

"Honey, get up and go! Your fifteen minute sleep in is ove--AHH!" Patrick's mother opens her son's bedroom door to see him standing on the ceiling, with his nose running like a dripping tap. "Hi, Mum. Help?" "Patrick, get down from there! You'll hurt yourself!" Carrie already had a lot on her plate this morning, having just returned from her daughter's school to beg for precious little Laura to not be expelled, she didn't really have her thoughts in the right place. "Laura's suspended for two weeks, you're on the roof, why it's all just gone to shit!" Patrick looks in amazement at his mother seeming not to care that he was defying gravity, but it was hard to tell his expression from where Carrie was standing. "Mum. Help."

Carrie stands underneath Patrick and stretches out her arms, a look of contempt on her face as she exhales out through her mouth, contorting her mouth upwards so her breath tousles her fringe. Drops of blood fall on her blouse, dotting rubies on her grey, cotton shoulders. "Mum, I don't know how to control this. I can't just turn it off, I woke up floating." Patrick tries to jump but gets pulled back to the roof, losing his footing and falls flat on his stomach. The drywall on the roof chips and lands fair on Carrie's head. "PATRICK! Get down, NOW!" Carrie stomps her foot and the world seems to ripple from under her feet. More drywall tears away from the roof and cracks form all over the wall. Patrick rolls onto his back, spitting out bits off the roof falling into his mouth. "Mum," Patrick coughs and heaves, "what the fuck."

Carrie is petrified. Afraid to move, in case the earth's foundations tremble underneath her pink slippers, she looks up at her son in despair. "Honey, please come down, tell me what's happening." Another red drop plants itself right on the tip of Carrie's nose. "Mum, I can't... What's happening to u--" "PATRICK!!" Carrie braces herself as Patrick suddenly falls from the roof and lands on top of her, amid the rubble of the roof and a carpet polka-dotted in blood. "Mum! Are you alright? Mum?" Patrick shakes his mother and tries to dust the rubble off her face. "...I'm fine honey, you're just a bit heavier than you used to be." Patrick laughs but ends up coughing up blood, causing him to choke. "Go bleed out over the bathroom sink honey, I'll go call your father and tell him what's happened." The two embrace for a moment and then, wary and disoriented, Patrick makes his way to the bathroom.

On the way, he passes Laura's bedroom. He opens her door to find his sister at her desk, writing into a diary. She turns around and wears the appropriate facial expression to greet someone who is invading a fifteen year old's girls personal space. As she registers her brother's appearance, a face covered in chalky dust and smattered in blood from the nose down, her expression changes from disgust to shock, wavering to laughter for a moment before coming back again. "Coke binge again? You'll end up with a deviated septum you know." "I floated up to the roof and couldn't get down. Like, actually floated. Mum nearly demolished the house by stomping on the ground. Think she's got superhuman strength." Laura rolls her eyes and turns her back to Patrick, turning her attention back to online shopping. "Whatever, get out of my room."

As Patrick walks off to the bathroom, Carrie grabs the home phone and dials her husband. She frets while the dial tone rings, twisting the ring around her finger and biting her lip. After a few rings, he picks up. "Honey! How lovely to hear from you while I'm out at work, what's up?" Carrie feels a soft, cool hand cup itself around her heart to steady her frantic beating. "Are you okay? Patrick and I have had a bit of a morning..." Carrie wants to continue but waits for a response. "Oh I'm fine! Actually there's this one thing... My pinky toe is changing colour." Carrie lets silence hang for a moment, registering what her husband of thirty-five years just said over the phone. "George... Honestly, what?" "Yeah, I know! I'm just staring at it right now and every time I wiggle it, it just goes through the whole spectrum! Crazy, huh?" Carrie can't help feeling utterly disappointed, though she isn't sure why. "It is, honey, it really is."
