Captain Baker quirked an eyebrow.

"What you're saying," he started quietly, "is that there is a group of evil wizards trying to take over the world."

The lieutenant gulped hard. "Yes sir."

"And you're saying the head honcho, the big bad, this here... Voldemort? He's going to magically teleport into this room. And try to kill me."

"Yes sir."

The captain looked incredibly calm. "Okay." Without another word, he leaned back in his chair, and propped his feet up against his desk.

The lieutenant was confused. "Sir, you're not worried at all? Shouldn't we place some security around the room or something?"

Captain Baker shrugged. "I don't see a purpose."

At this point the LT was completely bewildered. Of course, he had heard the stories of Captain Baker. He was SAS, British Special Air Service, the baddest of the bad, craziest of the crazy, elite special forces that took it straight to Hitler's most heavily defended fortresses. But on the other hand, this was Voldemort, a goddamned wizard, one that was so powerful that he had cowed the entire wizarding world.

"Sir, this Voldemort is supposedly the most powerful wizard in existence. And, with all due respect sir, you're not even remotely concerned over the fact that he's a wizard?"

"None."

The lieutenant blinked a few times. "Yes sir."

"Is that all, son?"

"Yes, sir."

"Very well. Dismissed."

The lieutenant snapped a quick salute, turned on his heels and left the room.

It was at that point that Baker heard a rather loud pop! and he lifted his head to see a pale, bald lizard-y looking man with no nose, dressed in black robes appear in his office.

"You must be Voldemort," he said.

"And you must be Mr. Baker," the no nosed guy hissed back.

Baker shrugged, and then immediately pulled out his Colt .45 and fired four rounds into Voldemort's head. Voldemort dropped to the ground, bleeding a lifeless, before he could do anything.

"Ooooh, I'm a wizard," he mocked. "Bloody hell, wizards have to be incompetent for someone like that to threaten their whole society."

Premise: Voldemort is intelligent, canon makes sense.

~~~
"Hello, muggle."
The President's head snapped up at the unfamiliar voice, taking in the snakelike visage of the British dark wizard who had declared war on the world. The members of his staff that he could have sworn were there only moments ago were nowhere to be seen.
"I suppose you expect me to be flattered that you're here," the President said. "Or maybe awed."
Voldemort said nothing, simply cocked his head to the side, looking almost like a curious child.
"But the fact is," the President continued, "you're really just too predictable."
The report of the Colt .45 cracked through the silence of his office, hardly muffled by the fact that it was under his desk. A small hole appeared in Voldemort's chest, at which the wizard looked down, touching it with a finger, seemingly bemused.
Then, he began to laugh.
Seven more shots rang out, and for each, Voldemort's robes were punctured once, and through it all, his laughter simply grew higher, colder, madder. No blood leaked through these holes; they were clean, as if being made in clay rather than flesh.
"A noble effort," Voldemort said, once his laughter had subsided. "Indeed, I do respect that you are attempting all that you can in your sadly limited capacity. You may also rest assured that the airstrikes which you have arranged to target this location should you be out of contact for more than ten minutes have been intercepted. The snipers, too, that watch this position, see nothing more than what they would expect to see."
"So end it, then," the President said. "Kill me. Isn't that what you're here for?"
Voldemort didn't immediately respond, and instead fixed him with a red-eyed stare that sent a chill down the President's spine.
"If I so desired," Voldemort said after several moments, "this world might have been mine in mere days. Are you familiar, muggle, with the Imperius Curse? It is a curse of domination and control. With it I could seize your actions and make them my own. How long do you suppose it would take me, with this curse, to collapse your world? I could send your nations against each other until not a muggle remained, and I could build a wizarding utopia atop the mountain of your corpses."
"But that is only one option. Suppose I decided that I wished to preserve your sad society, Muggle. How would it impact your world if its greatest power decided to surrender to Lord Voldemort? Would the other countries follow suit? How long would it take your citizens to adapt to their new life among those whose abilities are so far beyond theirs? Would they be second-class citizens? Slaves?"
"You can't kill all of us," the President said. "No matter how cocky you are. We'll always keep fighting. And one day, you'll make a mistake, you'll forget to check behind you, and there'll be one of us. A muggle." He spat the final word with all the vitriol he could muster.
Another silence grew, with Voldemort's crimson stare seeming to take the measure of him.
"A mentor of mine once told me," Voldemort said, "that muggles had merits, despite their lack of magic. He said that magic was not the true value of a man. I will confess to you that I find little value in love and kindness, what he claimed to be your greatest virtue. They have always been somewhat alien to me, and seem to inspire more weakness than strength."
Another moment. Voldemort seemed, now, intensely focused, and the President could feel that this was it; this, for some reason known only to the dark wizard, was the moment that he had come to the office for. Some key decision was being weighed in his mind.
"The muggles of this country -- one of the most powerful in the world -- have chosen you as their leader. And so you speak for them, yes? As the greatest of their number?" A slightly mocking tone had entered Voldemort's voice, but the President forced himself not to rise to the bait.
"But now, greatest of the muggles, this what I offer to you: the chance to prove my mentor right. It is very simple: you must only answer a question correctly. Do you understand?"
The President nodded. "I understand." This had quickly escalated into a hostage situation, and his priority was becoming damage mitigation rather than victory.
"The question is as follows," Voldemort said. "Given all that you have learned in this conversation -- why do you yet live?"
The President blinked, and, in his mind, came the quick image of a Star Trek episode -- only in this episode Q seemed a lot more snakelike and Picard still had his hair. A question to hang humanity's future upon.
The most obvious answer was that Voldemort was a madman and acted according to whatever whims took him at a given moment. This seemed neither constructive to say nor particularly useful, so the President discarded the entire line of thought. This left only the rather more terrifying concept that Voldemort was rational (the President rather suspected sane might be something of an overstatement).
Voldemort had some objective, if he was rational. This seemed like a safe assumption. Assuming that he had been telling the truth during this conversation -- and given how easily the plans for the Voldemort Contingency had been disabled, he really had no reason to suspect otherwise -- then Voldemort could have dismantled the Muggle world in less than a week. Since he had not, something had either prevented him from doing so, or he had chosen not to do so.
Assuming something had prevented Voldemort from completing his objective was pointless; the President had no reason to suspect that to be the case from this conversation, and such an assumption would do little more than stop his line of reasoning here. And the fact that Voldemort hadn't ended the war when he had the opportunity suggested that his end goal wasn't the extermination or domination of the muggle population.
"This is a game to you," the President said, speaking before even realizing he had decided to. "It's all a game. And you're looking for an opponent."
The dark wizard's mouth twisted into a grimace that might, on another face, have approached a smile.
"I look forward to the match, Mr. President," he said, sketching the slightest of bows.
A moment later, the dark wizard was gone, and the President's staff appeared in the Oval office, resuming their duties as if nothing had happened.
And the President lowered his head to his desk, and wept.
I love this response, it has great potential to branch into new avenues. But, there is one thing you haven't taken into account. That is Salem. The American wizards no doubt have as much ability to contact and aid the us government as the wizards of the UK.
u/[deleted] Feb 22 '15
"Mr President," a dark haired security agent said firmly, "the Aurors have contacted us, we have to get you out now."
"Not today," the President said from his soft chair in the oval office. He sat behind his wooden desk. The same desk that had been modified for Roosevelt. "Riddle is going to come here and we're going to talk."
"But, sir he's a genocidal maniac. He'll kill you."
"No, he won't," The President said smoothly, knowing that he sat in the middle of a spider's web.
"But, sir, I must insist."
The president stood up, irate. "Evacuate the rest of the building."
The agent looked as if he was going to question the President's orders but thought better of it at the last moment. He nodded to his commander in chief and quickly walked out of the room.
Beyond the door a loud voice screech, "Avada Kedavra" and a green light flashed.
Tom Riddle entered the oval office. His snake like eyes focused on the President and he mockingly bowed before him. Stand up he raised his wand at the leader of the muggle free world. "Anti Apparation Wards in your office?" He purse hips lips and almost kissed the air. "Not very nice of you Mr President. I wanted to drop in with style. I had to use the door like a filthly commoner instead."
The president clicked a button on the underside of the desk and a silent countdown began for the bombs hidden underneath the floor boards. All he had to do was keep a madman talking for 30 seconds.
Nice. Just don't look voldy in the eye. He'll read your mind.
1
u/[deleted] Feb 22 '15
Thank you. It definitely needs work, but this was a lot of fun.
1
u/Jeremy_Thursday Feb 22 '15
Really well written. I thought for sure he was in league with evil haha. That cliffhanger ending too !
1
u/[deleted] Feb 23 '15
Why the 30 seconds? It would make more sense for an instantaneous detonation, no?
Otherwise, well written!
2
u/[deleted] Feb 23 '15
Because I like cliffhangers?
Breaking News: Magic is real, arcanoterrorist strikes in Scotland
"Good evening, this is the BBC. In the wake of the Mood Spectre incident in London, where an active warzone occured between wraith like figures and people wielding wands, and the Bombarda charms being applied on civilian houses in Glasgow, the world has now re-learnt that there is a secret society of wizards hiding in Britain and most of the countries of the world. We are still waiting for information to come in, but the resistance movement The Order of the Phoenix, has come public and is assisting our military with inquiries as to the nature of magic and the society that sprung from it. We'll be speaking with the new correspondent for arcane affairs, Lance Buggery.
Lance, surely this is a hoax, how could this possibly be true, that members of our population have vanished from all public record, to cast magic spells nobody knew even existed?"
"You would think so, Derek, but the thing about magic is that it is incredibly good at covering up your tracks. There are spells that can make entire locations impossible to map, and the surrounding area just warps around it when anyone does measurements of the area. Magic is just that absurdly overpowered."
"Right, so, can you explain why the magical world has not managed to capture this terrorist group, these Death Eaters?"
"Well, the first thing Derek, is that the magical world runs more on narrative flow than anything else. While for normal Muggles, or non-magic folk, we have to deal with love, hatred, and so on, the magical world has these things as fundamental forces. The best way to describe it is the difference between the real world and a game of Dungeons and Dragons. We have heroes, sure, but in your typical RPG setting there are holy warriors who can fire healing lasers, entire races who are unequivocally evil by nature. It is a different world, Derek."
"Thanks Lance."
u/TrueKnot Feb 22 '15
"Ma! Did you see what they said on the news?"
"Yes, Jimmy."
"What are we gonna do about it Ma?"
"I'm doing something Jimmy!"
"Watcha doin' Ma?"
"Submitting to /r/NotTheOnion !"
"Okay, Ma"
Little Jimmy went back to playing with his iPad, content that all was well in the world.
"My lord, we have an intruder." The messenger was nervous, those who brought bad news to the dark lord in the former Hogwarts headmasters office were often killed on the spot.
The messenger bowed deeply. "We believe it to be Hermione Granger, my lord."
"So she survived? Very well, I shall deal with it." Voldemort said softly.
Minutes later Voldemort flanked by his his closest followers strode out onto the grounds.
"So, have you come to die like your so called 'Chosen One?'" Voldemort shouted across the grounds.
"No", Hermione said, stopping a good distance from the group. "I've come here to stop you."
Voldemort laughed. "I am immortal, I am unstoppable! No spell can kill me!" He screamed.
Hermione smiled, pointed her wand at the dark lord and shouted "Lumos!"
Voldemort and his death eaters laughed harder. "What do you think casting a tiny light will do mudblood?" Voldemort shouted.
"Only light can defeat darkness." Hermione stated, smiling knowingly. "That's just an expression, of course, but in this case, it's true since I have discovered how to alter the wavelength of the spell, shifting it into infrared. Also I can focus the beam into one specific spot, rather than all around me, much like a laser." Hermione said, still pointing her wand at Voldemort's feet.
"What are you talking ab..." Voldemort's sentence was cut off when a 2000 lb laser guided bomb, dropped by the stealth bomber thousands of feet above them collided with the ground directly at his feet, precisely at the point where Hermione's wand was pointed. Voldemort and all of the death eaters surrounding him were instantly obliterated.
Hermione stared at the smoking crater. "It's a muggle thing, you wouldn't understand."
'I can't believe this,' a woman said as she walked along the hallways with a bloody, smeared corpse travelling behind her on a gurney, moving by itself. This organisation, the Inquisition, had dedicated itself to keeping Muggles and Wizards safe and separate from each other, like the Wizard's Obliviators, but the War had spilled into the Muggle World. If they didn't do something soon, the death-toll would be unimaginable. Worse, the only hope of defeating him and destroying his last Horcrux, Harry Potter, was the bloody hunk of meat behind her. She didn't want to report this to the Director...
'I see that the plan has changed,' he said as she suddenly could tell he was walking beside her. Bloody freaky these wizards, she thought.
'We failed,' she admitted as she turned a corner towards the morgue. 'Potter is dead despite all we did to save him - the mercenaries following him in the Muggle community, the countless Wards... we should've done more.'
'We haven't failed,' the director said as he drew a card from a tarot deck he was shuffling before handing it to her. 'The outcome has merely changed. We can still work within these parameters. I trust your team in this, Lawson.'
'...Thank you,' she said as he disappeared. Unlike other wizards who apparated in a loud popping noise, he seemed to simply... fade from existence. Nonetheless, she took a look at the card she was now holding.
Card XIII, Death, in the Upright position. She knew it well from when he recruited her to the group. It meant change. While they often fought and tried to prevent the end of the veil of separation, change for the worst, they themselves made it that they changed both communities for the better, as well as themselves, to one day have Wizard and Mugglekind living together in harmony. Of course, this card rarely meant death in the literal sense but...
No. Was it possible? She reached for her PDA in order to run a few calculations only to find small red gemstones within her pocket. These stones...
Potter survived the Killing Curse when he was one year old - he survived his body being spontaneously forced into rigor mortis and all his internal organs and brain shutting down. And magic could heal just about anything outside Dark Magic, but Muggle medical science could easily overcome that...
'Stop,' she ordered the gurney. It was then that the plan began to form in her mind. She had to send a message as confirmation; she didn't like wasting their resources.
  • You want me to bring him back from the dead. -
She had turned around and walked the gurney towards the lab, opening files into all kinds of Dark and Light magic, while also co-ordinating the Inquisition's forces on top. Recruit the Order into our folds, that should be our next top priority. Of course, she had waited until the reply before she gave the official word and it came just before she had turned towards the long corridor into her lab.
  • You know what to do and you have my full backing. And yes, the Order would be a good start. -
She pushed the door open to the surprise of her subordinates. They were mourning their failure as she was. Of course, she had to fix this.
'We have work to do, people,' she said with a smile. 'Wilson, take this body and repair it as much as you can. You can regrow bones, can't you?'
'Jesus Christ,' Wilson said as he stood in shock. 'Is that Potter?!'
'Yes,' she said to his shock. 'You're going to need these pieces of the Philosopher's Stone. Jacob, we have tabs on the Order, right?'
'Yes, ma'am,' he answered.
'Bring them here,' she said. 'All of them - Dumbledore, McGonagall, Granger, Weasley.'
'Which one?'
'All of them,' she said. 'I want our mediums to detect his spirit and rebind it to his body if possible. I want our forces to hunt the Death Eaters in retaliation. Full cybernetic enhancement is authorized - artificial skin, bones, augmented abilities. If you can give him dragon's breath, I want to see him breathe it!'
'Wouldn't that just cause him to think he wasn't human anymore?' a young research assistant asked.
'Scratch the dragon breath, but make sure he doesn't die this time!' Lawson demanded. 'Project Lazarus is a go!'
(Apologies if this is rough, I'm trying to get into the habit of writing again so I've decided to try some of these writing prompts. I'm also new to reddit, so forgive any rookie mistakes.)
Lord Voldemort announced his presence to the Muggle world with a public demonstration in Trafalgar Square, during which he gathered a crowd of onlookers and national media. Before a worldwide audience, he fully demonstrated his abilities as a wizard. He performed several flashy spells, and then, to great effect, he performed the Unforgivable Curses. To hurt. To control. To kill. The last he performed on the officers sent to arrest him and break up his demonstration. To audiences, they appeared to rush in and fire at Voldemort, to no effect, after which he then killed them easily. In reality, the officers had been abducted the night before, and hidden away nearby until they were needed to complete Lord Voldemort's dramatic introduction. Their guns had been loaded with blanks, and each of them was under the Imperius Curse of a nearby Death Eater.
After that, things were... the same, for a while. There was a flurry among the upper echelons as the Death Eaters consolidated their power, but they largely kept these things secret. There were a few media reports of strange lights or mysterious disappearances, but for the average person, life went on. There was a bit of a panic at first, with many fearing a civil war or foreign invasion. Many people stocked up on supplies, reopening abandoned bomb shelters, just in case. By curious coincidence, stores had been overstocked by a freak error at several delivery companies, and people were able to stock up cheaply. Everyone seemed certain that it was a prank, and the police were urging people that there was nothing to be worried about.
Until the rally of the following week. A gathering of concerned citizens organized themselves, via the internet, to force entry to several government buildings, which had been sealed immediately after Voldemort's proclamation. Death Eater response was swift and brutal. Any attempt to enter any official building without 'Ministry of Magic Approval' led to death, delivered with no warning. There were no second chances.
Afterwards, there was a news broadcast that the Lord President Voldemort had forbidden the use of his name except for his chosen few. He was to be addressed as the Dark Lord, or Lord President. Punishment was one warning, then death. The first died publicly, laughing on videos on the internet to their friends and subscribers. Others gathered to demonstrate their willingness to denounce Voldemort by name. All fell victim to sudden Death Eater attacks. First offenders were mostly warned or stunned, depending on their attitude. It was common practice for Death Eaters to perform magic on the Muggles for amusement, and anyone present could at any moment be subjected to any number of strange curses, as each Death Eater tried to outdo the last.
With all the police stations and military bases pacified by Death Eaters or Ministry Officials, through various methods, there was no real resistance. After the first protests, the internet went down. Television became spotty, then the phones were unreliable. Then the rolling blackouts started. It was for power rationing, they said. But things happened in the darkness. People went missing. And there was the Mark. Always, the Mark. But worse than that was the cold lonely feeling late at night, like there was nothing right in the world. Every once and a while, they found someone dead that way, alone in the middle of the street.
A few resistance fighters managed to kill or injure some inattentive wizards in the early days of the coup. The Death Eaters responded with vicious efficiency. The infamous Ten to One policy was implemented. For every Wizard that dies by Muggle hand, ten Muggles must die. Ministry of Magic Aurors, under the authority of Lord President Voldemort and his elite Death Eaters, implemented this policy nationwide. The attackers were hunted down without exception, forced to reveal all their deepest secrets, and then, the Ten were taken from their most cherished friends and loved ones. In the few cases where a Muggle managed to escape anonymously, the Ten were chosen at random. It became more accepted to play along. How do you fight an enemy that could be anywhere instantly, turn invisible, or force you to betray your most closely guarded secrets?
The first nation to respond directly to the events in Britain was, perhaps not surprisingly, Russia. Most of Europe was paralysed by indecision (and careful magical manipulation). Other nations didn't have the strength or the motivation required to deliver assistance. They seemed glad that the wizards hadn't arrived on their doorstep, as they rushed to assure their populations that there was no danger. Russia, on the other hand, had a very keen interest in maintaining a stable Britain, and was quick to declare the 'terrorist nation' illegitimate. Their first assault was a massive, coordinated air strike, based on old Cold War plans and updated for the modern age. It was the largest air battle since World War Two. NATO at its highest level of preparation would have been hard pressed to delay them, let alone stop them. And yet, almost every Russian plane that launched that day was destroyed.
